I'm surprised an IRC client or servers are rarely discussed here. IRC is my choice as best p2p client. I've gotten things from IRC channels that aren't available on newsgroups or torrents for a few days. Is it too difficult or just not enough people know about it?

Most people don't know about it, not to mention you have to be in the know on what channels to use...
So most people stick with widely known stuff like torrents and usenet.

Technically IRC isnt a P2P client/application. It was originally designed as a communication service, the ability to transfer files between users was added later as sorta an after thought.
IRC's primary use is still to communicate. Its use as a P2P client has only grown with the introduction of XDCC and other transfer modes/protocols.
Anyway, as its already been said IRC takes effort to use. Most ppl dont wanna hafta work to get what they want so IRC isnt a viable choice for them.

Actually IRC is a Peer-to-peer Client because when you send a messege to somebody they get it and send it back, So technically communication is a form of P2P

I used to use IRC when I first got into downloading from the net but I never really got that much into it, but I wouldnt mind eploring it again if you could put some advice on here such as channels to use and where to get tutorials and download scripts from I think it would be usefull to a lot of people

In the manner of speaking, IRC can be defined as P2P in regards to communication. But the original IRC protocol itself was never intended or designed for transfer of data (files/binary etc) the DCC/CTCP protocol was added later and thus gave IRC the ability to be used as a P2P client.
As for posting what channels to use, that would be against aD rules not to mention its damned near impossible to list every single channel out there on IRC. Channels come and go daily if not hourly..
As for download scripts, you can get those off the Net. there's XDCC Catcher for example.. Does most of the work for you. Tho ALOTTA channels loathe it and have banned it. you get caught using it, your kicked and most likely banned from the channel

usually you gotta got access to one of the higher level channels, the ones with the newest freshest stuff. Once you have access there, you usually can get access to other channels even those that randomly move around

RedStaff - those higher up level channels usually are reserved for those that have something to offer ie bandwidth, access to other channels, prechannels, prebots, private ftps.. you arent gunna get access less you have something to offer and it better be worth their time.
or you get to know some of the Ops in some of the medium level channels, help out in the channel and work your way up from there. Or you befriend someone that has access to those higher level channels and get invited into the higher level channel
