I have looked and looked and tried everything that everyone has listed with no luck. I have never had any problems with burning dvd's. I am having troubles burning on Sony DVD-R. I have burned over 400 movies with this same kind of discs without problems. Now it will start writing the lead in and then it says illegal disc. I have updated my driver, updated Nero to 6.6.0.18 from 6.3.1.11, switched the target dvd size to 4300 and everything with still no luck. I can use off brand dvd's without problems. I thought it was a bad batch of discs so I took them back and tried again. The first one worked but same thing started happening again. Do I need a new burner? It's driving me crazy. Here is the log from the last burn:

Well I have taken a look at your log and cannot find any reason for the failures. The only thing I did notice was Nero6 downloaded over older version, try this, uninstall, run the clean tool,http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/en/Clean_Tools.html and then try for a re install from here, both packages

http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

Package 2

Hi alishia28
As gwen said not a lot wrong in your log.

Physical memory : 253MB
Free physical memory: 86MB
Memory in use : 65 %

512mb is better. Add some if you can. In the mean time keep as much memory free as possible. No multi tasking and shut down any unncessary processes.

Now for the illegal disc - you drive may not have the updated media codes 16x -R media you are using (sony). Usually the reason for this error.
For your drive -R is max 8x burn- they may not have all the media codes for 16x -R - just a guess.
What was the rated burn speed on the previous Sony's? How about the off brand that you are able to burn to?

I believe they are the same discs. I will have to call Best Buy to find out. I didn't pay attention. If for some reason they don't make the ones I usually use anymore, what would you all suggest that would be around the same prices. $30ish for 50 pack. I have the same problem when I try Maxell. I've unistalled Nero and running the cleaning tool then I will download again. How do I know that all of Nero has been uninstalled?

Thanks for your help already

16x media is the norm in alot of areas recently (us). 8x or lower is harder to fine. My quess is the ones you were using before were 8x.
You can check this if you like by popping one of these older burned ones in your drive then go to NeroToolKit>CD-DVD Speed>Disc tab. It will list the supported write speeds.

Verbatim would be good or Best Buy has a sale tomm on Sony's 100 for 24.99. If you can only find 16x speed try +R instead - may do better w/ these. Your drive is made by Liteon and looks like it supports booktyping. For +R discs you can booktype them to DVD-Rom making them almost universally compatible.

Uninstall all Nero programs in add/remove programs then run the clean tool and you should be good.

Keep us posted.

Oh & no problem on the help :)

Well I just ran the Nero tool to compare the discs and you are right. The discs I had been using were 8x. I couldn't tell the difference because it doesn't say on the discs and the packages are just alike. Thank you all so much for you help. At least I know now nothing else is wrong.

Thanks

You're welcome alishia28
If you want to use the 8x -R media best bet is to get it online.
You can get genuine Taiyo Yuden -R's for about the same price as instore. They run free shipping specials a lot.
Great site I use (US)

Okay, I give up. I got onto bestbuy.com and they had the 8x Sony
DVD-R discs so I ordered them. Well I got the package today and it was 16x again. So they said that they will send me a new one. If they send me another 16x I'm going to go crazy. My problem is the burner I have says it's a 16x but it won't burn at 16x. Is there a burner that will use 16x disc without any problems? Does that make any since? I just don't like ordering online and all the stores around me are only carrying 16x discs.

Thanks in Advance

Almost all new burners will burn discs at 16 X. I would suggest a very cheap but excellent burner, the benQ DW1650, at newegg.com when they have them for about 30-35USD. But you really don't want to burn them that fast any way. I have 2 16X burners and never have written one faster that 8X. I'm using the 8X,Sony MIJ labelled TY T02s +Rs booktyped to DVD-ROM. I burn the 16X verbs at 8X also. I wouldn't order sony discs on line because you could end up with Sony, made in Taiwan, discs which are not so desireable!! JM2C

I myself am having the same issue and then some, using TDK or Ridata Media I find myself unable to burn DVDs and bootable CDS. I have tried the built in burner an LG-GSA4082N which fails. I have sent the laptop to Acer 3 times now to have this resolved, have done an RMA exchange on the DVD drive, using the factory restore discs, using the Adaptec ASPI Layer, reinstalling the driver, reinstalling Nero.

My most recent effort is to use a TDK0400DVRWD usb drive it still fails with the following error. (My firmware is uptodate)

Your burner may be fine - it's a 16x burner but only for +R discs - 8x max for -R.
So the 16x -R are probably causing the problem.
You should be okay w/ good media using 16x +R.

Yep finding lower rated media in areas is like finding a needle in a haystack :)
I've used supermediastore along with many others here for over 2 years - no problems and a great place to buy -R 8x Taiyo Yuden. Might want to give it a try.

@mdweaver
Looking like you have the same problem. Your burn fails in less than a sec.
Your drive does not like the media.
The external hasn't had a firmware update in 2 years. Looks like the internal drive had one last year.

From the media code in the log TTH02 - this could be either 8x or 16x media.
For either drive I would try 8x rated media - ones to use are recommended above.
If you are in the US the link for supermediastore is above too.

You can also check the aspi & make sure nothing shows as corrupted just in case. Go to NeroToolKit>InfoTool>aspi tab.

System Aspi shows nothing. NeroAspi looks good. I will try the slow media. Thanks Binkie. Any idea what might be causing the Bootable CD issues? I can burn the disc fine in Nero but its missing files when i try to boot. Ill post the internal drive log for the dvd and the burn log of the boot CD shortly.

Ok you're good on the aspi - you had mentioned aspi in your post so thought might as well check just in case.

On the bootable cd may not be of much help there but I'll try. What kind of bootable cd are you trying to do?

Ok on the cd - you are using the 'cd-rom boot' option correct? Don't see that in the log but it may not show. Does show cd image.

This is a failed burn. Most of the errors -like Focus or tracking error can be due to the media.
CMC Magnetics Corporation doesn't make good cd's or dvd's.
Better to use cd wise would be made in Japan Fuji & Maxell - usually made by Taiyo Yuden - great for cd's & dvd's.

Burn process failed at 24x
For the cmc's try 16x or lower.

OK I had the same problem and have now resolved this.

I checked the make of my drive then did a firmware update search. One of the flashes (as they are called) deals with the X16 issue.

Here is a list if that helps.

as you can see, alishia's f/w is up-to-date, have tried to get info on the "gsa4082n" but can only come up with the "gsa4082b", gotta hand it to LG, they haven't updated computer components since '04.

@ alishia28
sorry your getting hijacked but if your still having problems, please do not hesistate to post.
If the slower media fixed the issue let us know, outside of checking your firmware to ensure that it's the latest version, you might consider changing the drive position to master on the cable, a relatively easy switch, position jumper to CS and switch to connector on end of cable, same with your combi-drive, switch jumper to C/S and position to the second/slave position on the cable. You may also wish to check your aspi, as described by binkie7 earlier in the thread.

where did you get your drive at? e.g. U.S.A., U.K., etc. cannot not find that drive with the "n" option only the "b"

plus using CMC MAG media, that's not good. Gotta be a european version, but checked the "global site" for LG and nothing on that drive.

I checked out the aspi in Nero tools and it shows that the system aspi is not installed but the Nero aspi is installed and working properly.

I still have yet to get the discs back from Best Buy. I hope they are 8x. Other discs that I've tried that are 8x and 4x work fine. I just don't want to have to search and search for them if I don't have to. Everywhere I have been looking has all switched to 16x.

As for switching it to the primary channel, when i first installed it I tried to but my whole computer started messing up. I'm not the greatest at computers so some things go over my head. Do I need to take the combo drive out of the top "hole" and put the burner there? I tried just switching the cables around but the combo drive cable thing wouldn't fit in it right.

I recently got the computer I'm using now. I don't think there is much difference between the two. Should I take the burner at of the 1st one and put it in the second?
1: HP Intel Celeron CPU 2.0 GHz 1.99 GHz, 256MB of ram
2: Compaq Intel Celeron CPU 2.60 GHz 2.60 GHz, 248MB of ram

I just don't understand why a 16x burner won't read 16x discs. I don't want to burn them that fast, I just want to be able to use them.

Thanks Everyone for helping

Hey alishia28
Well it's a 16x drive but for +R only not -R - max for that format is 8x.
Your up to date on the firmware - last one was 2/06 and my quess is Sony 16x -R media codes not included - is somewhat newer media.

So you have another burner in a 2nd pc you can swap? What's the make and model of that one.

I don't have a second burner, I was just wondering if it would work better in one pc over the other. If I were to buy another burner, is there one you all would suggest that I could buy at a store and not online, that would read 16x +&-R. Am I making any sense???

Thanks

It is not a mis type. GSA4082B is the OEM drive made by LG which has a firmware update. The GSA4082N is the Acer Specific version of the drive which has no firmware update and it is not possible to use the 4082B to flash the 4082N.
