cool, thx for the info. mine's a 6650a drive.
there were a couple parts in Star Wars DL burn that paused, and I started to panic, but that was playing VLC. When I played it with Windows Media Player (just as a test) it was smooth. Then I also tried those same spots on my philips standalone player and it was fine. Looks like my Samsung TSSTCorp on my tower is starting to flake out as well. Though, after this experience with my notebook and it's TSSTCorp, I think they just make cheaper or more low end burners. If I get around to replacing my tower one, I'm gonna buy an NEC.

Hey, Gollumn, I don't know if you do rebates but Tigerdirect has the NEC for $20 again.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...88&Sku=N27-1894

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I've never owned a NEC drive (only because they are not bitset ready with DVD5 media) but a lot of folks seem to like them ok. I happen to be a fanboy of litey's and benq's.

@Mort

You should give an NEC drive a shot sometime, using the modified firmware is no bid deal and takes care of the issues you addressed.

LOCOENG,

No offense but I'm like an old dog and pretty set in my ways. I'm sure NEC makes good drives but I already know the ins and outs about litey's and benq's and they have been good to me.

This old coot got one of the last 1650s at newegg.com to go with the first one I got there. Something to see when both are lit up and burning the same movie @8X. LOL You're of course are right about the new BenQs. Why would a company start putting out crap, after having one of the top burners around? Bottom lines suck. We've new-and-improved this country into products that no one wants to buy and in many cases can't afford.

Is there such a thing as a DL RW disk?

DVD+RW DL has been developed, but I'm not aware of any burner or media that supports them. There would be severe compatibility problems with all existing devices.

I got my DW1655 about a week before they started disappering, glad I got one while I still could...very happy with it and it compliments my NEC 3540 very well.

@LOCO

Have you done a lightscribe with it yet? My LG does them but not impressed with final product. One reason I ended up with 2 1650s instead of 1655s. Besides I have way too many non-lightscribe TYs to burn.

I've done one lightscribe disc and have about 30 more to go, wasn't terribly impressed with the final product but I'm sure not all covers would be a candidate for lightscribe. I went ahead and got the lightscribe because I'm a sucker for gimmicks and it was only a few dollars more, so I figured I'd give it a go. Where do you get your LS covers?

Hey Guys,
Want to use Nec ND-3550 and bitset with factory firmware!
Go to; Maddogs website (Rebaged NEC)and use the MADDOG 16X2DVD9- 8X Firmware. Then use their WinBTypeV2 to set the bitsetting. I love NEC burners - they burn just about anything and last forever!!!!!!!!

I forgot to let yall know the newest firmware for the NEC ND-3550 DVD RW 16X2DVD9-8X_FW_1F2. Trust me it works fine I can use +R when I want and not worry - I have pretty much stuck with -R . I am compatible whichever way I go now !!!!!!!!!

Update: I know where you can get DVD-RW DLs now, though waht I said earlier still applies: You might have a hard time burning them and an even harder time playing them.

@LOCOENG

I get all my covers from http://cdcovers.cc/

I basically print a front panel of the DVD @35% and cut it out and place it in the DVD slot of a notebook. The DVD goes behind it. If doing the DVD disc covers in lightscribe, which I don't, I would first change the color cd cover into a black and white image and then lightscribe it. You get a better product with B&W.
