The main reason I have a DVD buner is to back up games (XBOX 360 and PS2) I also backup my DVDs what type of Drive should I get now that my old one died. Should I get another Pioneer 111d, or a diffrent drive?

Hey Domreis
LiteOn fan here - SHW-160P6S. I've used a few different models - no issues. imho like timex watched :)
Pioneers are good too - have an older one but they don't support booktyping like the LiteOne's or BenQ unolord suggested.

I have several NEC ND 3550A, they've always done me proud, with a recorder buffer of 2048 kb and no rip lock, I'm sure they'd be perfect for what your doing. But if you really wanted the mamma jamma of them all, The best burner that I own, also arguably the best on the market would be the ALMIGHTY Plextor PX-716A with BURN-Proof Buffer underrun protection and a WHOPPING 8192 KB recorder buffer. As far as cost efficiency goes, I'd say go for the NEC, you can get one from tiger direct for about $40. But if you're like me and you go for the top of the line stuff, the Plextor will run you around $75. Hope this helps in your selection.

What about a Samsung SH-D162C, I have heard good things about that.

Although the SH-D162C is a great dvd rom drive, with some awesome technology, capable of very high read speeds, it is not a burner.

BTW I forgot to mention both of those burners I told you about burn DL discs as well.

If you're going to be burning DVD+Rs it helps to have a drive that bitsets. The Lite-On does that out of the box and the Benq does with a utility that usually comes with the drive. I have the NEC and I love it dearly but it does not bitset single-layer +Rs unless I get a hacked firmware. But it is a fantastic drive.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

My next burner will be a BenQ. As of now, I've been using the SONY DRU 710 (a rebadged LITEON SOHW 1633S) for over 2 years and she's still burning strong. Yes... it does an outstanding job "book typed/bit setting" flawlessly -- meaning no worries for any of my standalone dvd players.

There are tons of good burners out there, so choose it wisely. The choice is yours.

Maybe some ideas here, you'll also get a handle on what media to buy that burns properly at it's rated speed.

You'd better hurry and get one then, they've pulled out of the european market and the drives they are putting out now (1670) arent true BenQ's.

My vote would be NEC or Lite-On.

FYI, I just checked around and the only Benq I could find other than the 1670 was a new 1655 at Meritline, and a refurbed 1655 at mwave.com. The well runs dry.

Hi

After lurking here for a while, I'm finally gonna post.

My LG DVD burner (GSA-4160b) seems to have started creating coasters.
It's been used for 2 years, creating approx 200 DVDs.

The software I use to write the ISO image says all went well,
but it takes abnormally long to finalize the DVD.
Also, the tray won't open sometimes. I have to reboot to get
it to open.

From my reading, CD and DVD burners "burn out" or die after a while.
what causes this?

what is an expected "life" of a DVD burner?

If they're not gonna last too long, then why bother buying
an "expensive" unit?

All comments welcome.

Welcome to aD
Hard to give a life expectancy of burners. Wear and tear will burn anything out. Some can be heavily used with over 1000 burns and still be going strong.
Burning 200 dvd's though is not a lot.

So your problem may be firmware/media related - let's start there.
If your using newer media and your firmware is not update may be part of the problem. Mediocre media can play into this too.

The latest firmware for your drive isv A306 - if not using that one here's a link:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1923

What media are you using? Like Sony +R 16x etc.

Well, it's interesting you bring up the LG because I have the 4163B and the double-layer capability failed after about a dozen DL burns.

That said, all of my burners have 1000+ burns and are still going strong. My oldest is an Aopen (don't know who really made it) that's over 2 years old and still kickin' and I have another machine with an NEC 1300 that's about 4 years old, I think, and it's still truckin'.

The moral of the story is that it's really hard to say. You really can't judge lifespan in terms of burns or years. I like having one or two spares around because they're cheap enough but I don't worry myself about one of burners kicking it.

I really like my BenQ 1650. If you can snatch one of these, I would get it. My second choice would be a Lite-On.

Shovels Rule!

Hi

I'm using Maxell DVDs. I've always bought them.
no name brands are crap...so it seems.

FWIW, the new DVDs (Maxell 16x) show a Disc ID of
"CMC MAG-M01-00". The old ones (Maxell 8x) show an
ID of "RITCK-R03-02". could the new ones be crap discs?

I always burn at 2x!! However, I never really check the actual
numbers when it's done. Seems that even tho I set the max burn
at 2X, DVD Decryptor burns at 4X !!

I've since bought another DVD burner (LG GSA-4167B)
and I'm making coasters. This is frustrating.

@perogyboy
Maxell can be good just look for made in Japan only. The ones you have now CMC are not by far very good. More than likely the reason for your coasters.
The latest firmware for your new drive is DL13.
In Decrypter go to Tools>Drive>Check for firmware updates. A pop will give your the version you have. If lower than DL13 - update it.
Here's a link too:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2126

For media use Verbatim or made in Japan only Fuji, Sony or Maxell.

Mr Binkie:

thanks for the FAST response. wow!
I previously updated the firmware. It makes no diff.

I've been experimenting:
what seems to be making the diff is using my old 8X (RITEK)
DVDs. They are working!!! The new DVDs (CMC MAG) are NOT!!
Even tho they're both Maxell, they are NOT the same disc!!

I am thinking of trying to get my $$ back from BestBuy on these
crap discs. I've made about 15 coasters with the 100 pack.
made 2 good discs. Do you think it's worth a try to get my cash back?
