There ya go...at one time i didnt know either.

as everyone else has said the benq drives are pretty good drives for the buck....but right now they are scarces to find if you can at all... ive been looking everywhere today for the 1650 or 1655 but none to be found. unless you want a open box. which doesnt get you any warranty....might wanna look into the benq 1670.

lol - yep it's ms binkie :0)
No biggie and no offense taken
I sure do think you should get your $$$ back - hey they don't work. Best Buy is pretty good on the exchange bit.
In fact return them before Sunday. Verbatim's are on sale there 50 for $12.99 = great deal and great media.

Maxell uses different manufacturers so look for the made in Japan to get the goods one.

btw is the perogy part of your nic for the polish cheese & potato ravoli thing?

I have an LG GSA-4163B and an LG GSA-4167B, both with latest firmware, both have burned well over 500 discs each. (DVDs & CD-Rs)
and both still reliable as ever. In fact, my 4163B has probably burned near 1000 times. Successfully, I may add.
Everyone has their own preference.
Whatever works for you & your set-up. All I will say is this:
At least LG does make their own. Unlike some rebadged brands.
My suggestion to anyone is to look at the specs, like read formats, write formats, MTBF hours, etc. Make your choice from that.
Example: LG Drives have an 80,000 hour power on life expectancy. The 2 models I own support any format, and burn Dual Layers very well. BTW, they LOVE Taiyo Yuden, Maxell MIJ, and Verbatim Media!

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

Hi Ms. Binkie

I use PerogyBoy as my name cos it's funny.
I have Ukrainian heritage, and a freezer
full of perogies. I am indeed a rich man.

Thanks for your advice. This is a great forum.

FYI,
I have a Sony DRU-510A which was a Birthday present from adorable wife in 2003 and it is still running. This will still burn even the 16X Ritek and Sony Media, although the firmware hasn't been updated since the days of the 8X media. I really have no idea how many DVD and CD disks it has burned throughout its lifetime. I mainly use a Sony DRU-800a (rebadged Lite-on Drive) which is DL capable. I love both of these Sony Drives, but would recommend a Lite-on drive to anyone who will listen. Just my 2˘ worth.

Yep that's the one - picked up one myself 2(?) months ago - only had the retail version on sale at that time. The only diff is w/ the oem version your just get the drive - but that all you really need anyhow.
The retail added + was a Nero oem cd, power dvd and a audio cable - whooopie :0)

@Cincyrob,
I notice the guy in your signature is running away from the playoffs towards the draft..
You are right Binkie, no difference between the OEM and the retail except for the pretty box, cables and software. Go for the better price point.

Yes, the LG GSA-4167B & GSA-4163B both support booktype setting to DVD-ROM, and they work perfect with CloneDVD 2 & Nero.
Read this review for the GSA-4167B:

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

Binkie:

I successfully returned my crappy DVDs to Best Buy. No problems
getting my $$ back. In fact, they refunded the full $33 back.
I am supposed to get a $15 rebate back in the mail. I was expecting
them to deduct the $15, but they didn't. I wasn't about to
say anything. I guess that means I will get $15 for my "troubles".
If you were in Calgary, I'd offer to buy you a beer for your advice.

I ended up getting some FUJI discs (60 cents each) (DiscID = YUDEN000-T02-00)
This manufacturer is in the 1st class media category on
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

I also bought some Memorex (30 cents each) (DiscID = RICOHJPN-R03-04).
These are listed as 2nd class media.

I will be doing some more burning this weekend, so we'll see how it
goes with this media.

@Cincyrob,
I hope they ship you the one with the Boston Red Sox logo on the front face plate, should give your house a warmer, more family orientated feel to it. Not only that, it'll make you more popular with the ladies and more successful at work. =)

should the media always be mij even if it's verbatim. I always get the verbatim mit at best buy cause it's all they have. is that still ok. also I have liteon 1633s and 160p6s and have never been more satisfied with burners. I picked up the 160p6s on black friday it was an i/o magic boxed product and got it for $13.99 not bad for getting up at 4 am.

@barcia...... those Verbatim disks are manufacturers coded as MCC.... top notch and right up there with the MIJs! Use them, they will last!

I guess I lucked out 2 months ago buying my BenQ LightScribe 1655! I love it and I get great scans on my burns! Now I hear they are hard to get. I just hope that in the future they keep up with the firmware updates.

@Cincy Rob,
it depends upon how long it sat on a shelf, In my humble experience, it probably will, the latest firmware update is PSOB,
found here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=17
The date on the firmware is 14 Sep 06 so I'll wager on two things, the Reds won't make the playoffs, and there is one newer firmware update for your drive.

Good deal returning those CMC's. Those Fuji's (mij)are great stuff -Taiyo Yuden you should be good. Definitely 1st class.

Ricohjpn weren't bad at all in my experince though haven't used them in awhile.
Much better than the CMC's. Stay away from the Memerox though - you never know who the manufacturer will be. Luckily you got Ricoh this batch.
Hmmm need to find you a good Canadian site to buy branded Taiyo & Verbs online so you don't have to do the guessing game.
Now for the beer can I have perogies instead :0)

Keep us posted on your outcome - good, bad or otherwise!

@cincyrob
Yep that LiteOn will booktype automatically w/ the +R media and Nero.
If using Clone you'll need to use the booktype utility.
Here's a link:

Binkie:

The Memorex are proving to NOT work. Burn goes ok, but
they are glitchy or won't even load in my DVD player.
Guess I'm gonna take those back too.

Question:
My home theatre DVD player is a 5 yr old Panasonic.
Is there a prob playing newer 16x DVDs in older players?
I have been buying 4X and 8X DVD blanks with few problems, but
lately I've bought 16x (and burned them as slow as possible)
and have encountered the probs.

are you buying your blank DVDs online somewhere?
How do you know your getting "good ones"?

you can come over and have perogies any day....
Always enough for guests.

16x media may give older players a problem.
Use a DVD lens cleaner on it - the lens can get dusty after awhile - may help some.

Looks like yout got +R media so booktype those to DVD-Rom to increase compatability.

Which burning program are you using? May auto booktype.

Online I use supermediastore.com to buy genuine Taiyo Yuden. May ship to Canada but might not be cost effective. Can't remember the site I saw for Canarda - I'll see if I can find it tomm (oops it's tomm here already:) )
Instore like others here on aD I buy Verbatim or look for the mij Sony's, Fuji or Maxell.

If u want TY's and u're in Canada - Toronto here - then try this place. I've ordered from them a few times: http://www.blankmedia.ca/

And just keep checking the Best Buy and Futureshop flyers for the Verbatim sales...
