Hi guys. Thanks to everyone who helped me with my build. It was working great until this recent problem that I thought maybe some of you might have some suggestions to possibly help me out...

So the old man had steam cleaners come in and steam clean all of the carpets on Wednesday. So the day before I unplugged my computer and put it up on my desk to get it off the rug. I left the cables on the floor because I assumed the cleaner would just be an average size moron and not a JUMBO moron and would clean under teh desk a little bit without super-soaking my cables. Anyway...when I hooked computer back up...the computer SOUNDED like it started up fine. All fans were running, lights were coming on and what not...seems all good. BUT....the monitor is not working. It says "no signal" when I hook it up. So it's getting power, but not the signal. The graphics card that I'm hooking it up to (digital connection) seems to be working because the fan on it is moving. But I got out a D-Sub cable and tried hooking the monitor up to my mom's laptop too to see if something was wrong with the monitor and still got the "no signal" message. I did this because I thought maybe my digital connector cable (from monitor to PC - graphics card) could have been damaged if the connector pins got wet or something. But the D-Sub cable is brand new and was stored in a box so it should be all good...but it still didn't work with laptop. So this indicates to me that it's probably not a bad cable, probably not a bad graphics card, probably nothing wrong with my desktop PC....and maybe something is mysteriously wrong with my monitor all of a sudden.

It was working like a dream as of Tuesday before the cleaners came and I unplugged it. So I have no idea why all of a sudden it would stop working.

This is a nice 20" Viewsonic flat panel monitor that I bought in June, so there might be a warranty on it (i'm not sure, i'll have to check on that), but I want to isolate the problem first....if, indeed, there really is a legitimate problem. Hopefully there's an easy solution and I'm just missing something.

Any idea how I should proceed at this point?

Thanks so much!

It Sounds like it's probably the monitor...Do you have a second monitor that you can hook-up, to completely rule out graphics card on Desktop?..

Where cables noticablly wet after cleaning...Are you sure they were dry when you plugged in?..You could have zapped monitor?..

It seems by everything you posted that unfortunatelly it is the monitor...

You are doing a good job in isolating problem...You really need a second monitor to completelly rule out all other possibillities...2 bad cables etc...

Looking at the video cards available for a SLI-ready mobo. Do the video cards have to be SLI-ready on a nVIDIA mobo? There are so many cards available w/o SLI, I was just wondering. TIA for your responses.

what video cards are you looking at?..you should at least be looking at 7600 or above series if your going to run SLI...SLI is available on 6600 series and above video cards...7600 series and above...use the SLI connectors...6600 series does not...done through PCI slot...

@Lp531,
You don't sleep either. lol. Thanks for the quick reply.

I think you answered my question. The mobo I'm getting is SLI ready so therefore I should at least get the 7000 series video card, right? I have posted a couple of links to the only cards I could find with SLI ready in the pic. If there are more at Newegg.com could you link them or something for my convenience. lol. Thanks again. btw I'm trying to stay within budgetary constraints.

Do you know why aabbccdd got a little suspension? I was going to PM him but I don't think the system will let me with him being in timeout. lol.

Thanks for the fast reply and looking forward to the next one.

Anyone got any ideas on that one? Tax time... speanding the money already! hopefully time will not run out so I can get a AMD 185 zoom, zoom ,zoom!

Here is a chart you can use to compare cards...it compares the card I recommended...versue the one your asking about now...you can use this chart to compare any of the cards you are looking at...use the dropdown to pick cards to compare...and the test...or game...in whatever resolution you play in...

I went to that link and seen where you put the two different cards in to be compared, BUT call me stupid- I dont get it? I played around and changed different cards but where do you get the break down of the gains or loses? I dont see the ratio of the two cards [7600] in SLI matching up to the one card [7900]?

The cards being compared are shown in blue...their is 7600 listed then 7600 SLI which as I understand chart is 2 cards in SLI...the same with ATI cards...will list card then card in crossfire...

7900gs at 60.0
7600gt in SLI 48.0

i have a question about memory. you reconmmened me to get 2x512 to make my gig. well why cant i get just a single gig stick. i mean if i ever want to upgrade to say 3 or 4 gig i will have to replace all the 512's to put in 4 single gigs, right. if so then ill have all these 512's laying around. unless i get really good at building pcs and can use them in there. does the 2x512 mb make a difference in the way the board performs vs a sigle gig.

The reason I recommended 2 512...it takes to sticks to run in dual channel mode...if you only have 1...you will be in single channel mode...if you think you might go to 4 gigs then I would recommend you buy a 2 gig dual channel kit...remember all the sticks need to be identical to run in dual channel...The single stick might run in dual channel mode if you buy another stick...it might not...dual channel kits are tested and guaranteed to...if you plan to go to 4 gigs you will have to have all kits identical...they might not be available latter...

Quote:
Dual-channel architecture DDR/DDR2 SDRAM describes a motherboard technology that effectively doubles data throughput from RAM to the memory controller. Dual channel-enabled memory controllers utilize two 64-bit data channels, resulting in a total bandwidth of 128-bits, to move data from RAM to the CPU.

In order to achieve this, the DDR/DDR2 SDRAM memory modules must be installed into matching banks, which are usually color coded on the motherboard. It is not required that identical modules are used, but it is often recommended. One module of 512MB RAM could be installed in bank one and a 1GB module could be installed in bank two. Modules rated at different speeds can be run in dual channel, although the motherboard will then run all memory modules at the speed of the slowest module. Some motherboards however have compatibility issues with certain brands or models of modules when attempting to use them in dual channel mode. For this reason it is generally advised to use identical pairs of memory modules and most memory manufacturers now sell "kits" of matched pair DIMMs. Several motherboard manufacturers only support configurations where a "matched pair" of modules are used.
You should look-up the recommended memory for the motherboard you plan on using...I picked the corsair because it will work with most boards...I would be surprised if it was not listed as compatable on the manufacturers site...
