LEDs are cool and all, but they're not always useful. Watching a film in a dark room for example, becomes watching a film in a dimly blue lit room.

fasfrank,
I've only had experience with one samsung DVDRW and that's the one in my laptop. it's a piece of crap and all the dvd's (verbatim dvd+r's) I burn with it skips in my set top dvd players. besides I'm a bitsettting nut and booktype all my dvd+r's to dvd-rom. I don't believe the samsungs are capable of bitsetting. all the liteys should be with exception to the laptop slimdrives.

XTRMN8TR, should have gone with a Core 2 Duo build. Also if you want ot do SLI then try 2 8800GTs instead of GTX.

He actually means the 8800GT 512MB. It's nearly as fast, but half the price and half the size, not to mention it uses half as much power.

Hi guy,
Well it looks like you have a great overclocking board to base your build around. Let's see what we can do to help you complete this puzzle.
A bit of advise... You do not need much help when it comes to buying the newest, most expensive part out there. Here though, we can help you make some intelligent choices that will produce a system with excellent performance within a reasonable budget.
Memory:
Two gigs for now. Do you really need those kind of latencies?(3-4-3-9) I would think 4-4-4-12 would suffice. Save yourself a few hundred dollars by going with two gigs of 4-4-4-12 stuff.
Cooling:
You should be using air cooling for your first build. You will need an aftermarket cooler because you should overclock this motherboard. Otherwise you wasted some money buying it.
Here's one to look at:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154001
PSU:
The power supply is way to big and certainly not the best.
A quality 750 Watt is the way to go. I'm buying one of these for my Phenom build:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153038
Video Cards:
Two 8800GTs in SLI will be excellent. Almost the same performance as the GTX cards, much less heat production, less power consumption and a lot smaller. You can actually fit other cards in. Doing that with GTX or GTS cards blocks their airflow.
8800GTs are not available anywhere right now. In fact Newegg just went to "0" balance and removed them from my shopping cart. Wait one week and see.
You are going to need a hard drive and an optical drive as well.
More items I'm buying...
HDD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152052
DVD Burner:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151153
If you want bitsetting or lightscribe, get a Lite-On burner.
What operating system are you going to use?
Here's part of a pretty good chart from Toms hardware that rates current video cards... check where the 8800GT is:

I was hoping to get a "cool-looking" case. But I suppose that's not important...the quality of the case is. And since it's my first build with a small budget, I can't really have both. Therefore, I probably will go with the ANTEC Sonata III. But I have another problem. I was assuming the motherboard would have onboard video. I was planning on using no videocard for a while, and then installing it when I got the money. Obviously, this won't work with the mobo I was looking at (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128050).
So my question now, is: Should I get a different mobo with onboard video or should I stick with the one I have and buy a graphics card? And if I were to get a graphics card, what's the best one, considering my budget? I think I would want this computer to be at least equipped with an nvidia 7 series card eventually..

Those cool looking cases...lose there luster after a bit...you will get tired of all those lights...you will be happier with the Sonata in the long run...it is a cleaner look that you will appreciate latter...and it is a much quieter case...and as sam pointed out...it will Allow you to Live...and Not Burn the House Down..:)

The best thing you could do is to set up some LED lighting, or some Ultra violet cold cathodes, and put them on a switch. When you don't want them on, turn them off. It works wonders.

fasfrank,
that is a pretty good looking case. I just don't like cases with drive bay doors. I end up taking off the door and that severely hurts the cosmetics. the gull wing front doors on my CM mystique has spoiled me. swing em open and their outa the way, never take anything off. close em when I shut down.
the first pc I built was in an antec case. they are good cases but heavy and not truely tooless. nothing for me anymore except all aluminum construction and true tooless design.

XTRMN8TR,
Hehe you found the last ones available. Are you going to get them?
I believe as soon as they start arriving on the shelves..., and when a couple of other new arrivals appear, they will come down $30.00 or so.
I pre ordered a 2.2 Ghz Phenom so I'm in no hurry for mine.

Hi Mort,
I like aluminum too. I don't care for tooless PCI card holders though. Maybe if I see one I like I'll change my mind though.
I just bought one of these about 5 minutes ago:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163094

It's partially aluminum...(what is SECC?)It has no front doors and looks to be tooless as far as HDD and optical drives are concerned.
Edit:
Well I found out it's not aluminum..
SECC.... Steel, Electrogalvanized, ColdRolled, Coil

frank,
SECC is metal (steel). CM has started making the mystique's with the front aluminun and body SECC too. you can however still buy them all aluminum but they cost more.
edit: you edited while I was typing :) your're definition is the real deal.

I think the Antec 900 is made like that as well if I'm not mistaken. It's very lightweight and is a sturdy material. Frank would dislike the 900 though, not only is it not tool-less, but it's also one of the most difficult cases to install hard drives in!

Do Not worry...They are the same...
"PCI-E 2.0" is the new standard...the X16 stands for...sixteen lanes between M/B and Card on that particular slot...there are 32,16,8,4,2.& 1 lane...PCI-E Slots...
PCI-E 3.0 will double the transfer rate and is expected in 2009 or 2010...
Your Crosshair has...
(2) PCI Express x16
(1) PCI Express x4
(3) PCI Slots
Quote: PCIe slots come in a variety of sizes referred to by the maximum lane count they support. A larger card will not fit in a smaller slot but a smaller card can be used in a larger slot. The number of lanes actually connected may be smaller than the number supported by the slot size. The number of lanes are "negotiated" during power-up or explicitly during operation. By making the lane count flexible a single standard can provide for the needs of high bandwidth cards (e.g. graphics cards, 10 gigabit ethernet cards and multiport gigabit ethernet cards) while also being economical for less demanding cards.
Don't worry the 8800GT cards will work...

My local best buy still has a BFG 8800GT 512MB version in stock for 250. Looks like that's the place to buy them.
