No, just don't bother with crossfire. ATi graphics cards are fine, but crossfire's an absolute joke. I'm almost certain that's where your problems came from.

Okay. I wonder what a standalone 3870 would have gotten on 3dmark06, probably just over 10,000. So for an extra say £160, to get 2,000/3,000 marks seems pointless

With a good dual core CPU, A 3870 can make 11,000 points if not more. Even a 3850 can make 10,000.

If you really want to push the limits...go with PC-8500 Crucial or Cosair...You really can't push the limit with PC-6400...
Of the module you had chosen...those OCZ sticks were the cheapest...and basically they were all the same...except for the Color of the Heat Spreaders...My recommendation was basically a Price choice...I personally prefer Crucial or Corsair...I do not have a problem in using OCZ...however...they can be more temperamental with certain builds...some times they just do not like certain M/B chips...
I just have found that Crucial and Corsair...just work better universally for most builds...they are just more compatible...and more Over Clockable...I just personally think that they are higher quality memory modules...

Oh! I only have one E6750. I swapped CPUs using my old (LOL!) E4300 which I just sold! Computer runs great and it's oh so smooth! I know it's close to ideal for me and when I can get the memory it should be perfect at 3.8GHz. It almost has that "Old Friend" feel to it! It already does SuperPi 1MB in 14.735 seconds and 32MB in 14min 46sec 62ms so it isn't slow. The temps stay about 3 degrees higher than ambient temperature for the CPU. The temperature didn't go up but a couple of degrees going from 2.66 to 3.52GHz. I would figure that the E6750 would be a chip that couldn't meet the more demanding specs for The E6850. I guess they would run the same temperature wise but give the edge to the E6850 in performance. Just an Edumacated guess! LOL!!

Thanks theone!! I appreciate the advice on the DDR2 1066. It's not that much more really especially if you get what you pay for and more. ;)
Man the more I think about it the more I want to get the E6850....lol.
You guys don't know me that well...anyway I used to play golf at a higher level than most and I had all the BEST stuff you could get. lol. I'm getting that way with computers now. hehehe. AND that's bad according to my wife. She just doesn't understand!!! :P
Anyway!! Thanks for the advice. :D

You make "good" arguments for someone so young but you also fail to realize that said computer will take away time from her even tho she's in bed right now and I stay up late most of the time to be able to "chat" with you silly men!! lol NOW danger is realative to where you go on the NET and what you do while there. The are "bad" sites to visit and then there's purchasing on the NET too.
So see young padwon the argument is WEAK at best. LOL. I could go on but you need to visit with Dad to truly understand where I"m coming from. hehehe. ;P

I may have got up rather late, and therefore may also still be up rather late.
As for your argument, well... one of my friends is able to spend a great deal of time on his PC and with his girlfriend as well, so it can be done. As for the time spent on the net and the compulsion to buy things, it is indeed great I warrant you, but hey, with great power comes great responsibility right?

I would go with the 6750 use it over the next year...then once the mainstream Penryns come out...and go down in price...upgrade to a Quad Core Penryn...
This is what I am doing for a friend who wants the biggest bang for the buck right now...but wants to have a clear upgrade path...he wants this PC to last 4 to 5 years...which the penryn should accomplish that task...plan on using the GA P35C-DS3R as his board to give him the DDR3 upgrade path for memory...The Gigabyte M/B basically gives you the most option...

About the memory, I got to thinking about it and talking on the other thread with Soph. So I got to thinking about what he said that he would bet the 1066 chips are the same as on the 800MHz with the dominators. I looked at that 2.3-2.4v and then looked at the 2.1v of the 1066 Tracers. I'll give it a "Scientific Wild A$$ Guess" that the higher voltage is what gets the Dominators to 1066! To my mind, that should mean that the Tracers should be better and more overclockable. Just a theory but it makes good sense as a lot of people complain about the fancy heat sink getting hot at stock speeds! nothing get's the old memory hotter, faster than a swift kick in the voltage! On that basis and because I believe in myself, especially my S.W.A.G.s, as mine usually pan out! My choice is going to be the Crucial Ballistix Tracers. The ones I borrowed ran just fine at 1200MHz with just a slight increase in voltage to 2.2v. Didn't get hot either!
It's so hard to get a meaningful customer review anywhere to help you make up your mind, because more than half of them that do complain, burned it up an then swore it was run at stock speeds or it was DOA! They always say that they were running it at stock speed, when it died! A bit like the kid with Frosting all over his face telling his Mother that he didn't eat the cake! LOL!! Yet, earlier in their post they're mentioning 3.6 or better CPU speeds so you know they were at least 1080MHz because the 900MHz with the 2x wouldn't be fast enough for them!
I just go visit other overclocking forums. I'm a member but I never post. That way I don't get angry when somebody tells someone to FO, and That Someone, wasn't me!! ROFLMAO!!

I think that would be an accurate assessment..:)
I do not think you can go wrong with the Crucial...at least with the Crucial...you already know what they can do in your set-up...
I highly doubt that the Corsair could do any better...at the same voltage...

After putting my Laptop next to one the coolest parts of my house and leaving overnight there and booting up, i got these temps. I have another few ideas to get all temps under 20.
Plus, this part of Scotland is meant to reach -6 tonight.

Yeah i am, should have said that. It usually doesn't get this cold though. We get very cold winters and mild summers. Summers never beat like 20. :P
But i think im lucky, my dad has been in -60 i think in the "Tundra" area of Russia.

If youre a multitasker then go with the quad core(option 2)
To save a bit extra, just download the OS from torrents :P
Why don't you just put the corsair 520w PSU in the 2nd option aswell?

Russ, I'd expect that to be the case with most 1066 modules really, not just the Dominators. It may be that other brands don't need so much of a voltage increase to get to that speed, but I highly doubt PC8500 is the speed they started at.
Novadrago:
The HX power supply is better than the VX, I'd recommend you use that if you can. Editing 3D graphics may require a half decent graphics card (the ones you've chosen aren't half decent), depending on which programs you use. If you do it professionally, then the quad core is the CPU you want.

I think either cpu is fine but like sam said if you're a serious multitasker then the Quad may be the answer. ;)
To me the first computer is basically the one to go with BUT changing a thing or two. :D sam already mentioned one thing (2 really, gpu & mobo) You get a hsf with the retail version but if you notice a problem with heat you can get an aftermarket one. :D
