Did I tell him to get a 900watt P/S...for a 300watt computer...How is that the same...I read your post...I understand what you said...and You are Wrong...
Quote:
Let him get a 750W PSU, it makes no odds to me...
Then why did you post your comments...and why are you doing...the same thing to me...that made theonejrs and Mort leave...
Your telling people to buy expensive items...that will not work adequately...for there system...You are misleading people...and costing them money...One should never buy a P/S that is just big enough...because if you make any changes...your Screwed...

@sam and Lp,
There's no REAL winning that "argument" since you can spend about the same money on a 750W that you can spend on a 650W. I think the 750W gives you more head room and therefore more capabilities down the road. ;) BUT in all honesty the 650W will more than likely do what he (Blade) wants it too. ;)

I will say this, the CM-850W p/s is REALLY stable. :D I don't have any experience with the 750W model but I would bet money it would be about the same. And for $70 after MIR I would get it!!!! Of course I'm talking about the Real Power Pro series.

Hey Mort...
tom's vga chart comparison

7950's at the EGG

Seems like a good upgrade to me but I would think at least looking at the new HD3600 series is worth the time. ;) Are you interested in HD/BlueRay playback? If so then another card would be needed I'm pretty sure. ;)

For the record, a pair of 3870s with a quad core CPU will draw about 450W full load, AT THE WALL. Using a generous, but typical (of decent units) 85% efficiency rating, that's about 380-390W. Would I recommend the VX 450W in this scenario? Of course not. Would I recommend the 520W HX? Nah. 550W VX? Maybe, probably not though. 620W HX? Definitely.
Now if we were talking about a pair of 8800 Ultras, which we ->weren't<- then you get a bit too close to 500W for your 600W unit to be a wise decision, especially as we mentioned if you want to upgrade. For this example, I'd have no hesitation in recommending a 750W unit. It makes good sense.
Problem is, as you've rightly mentioned, the 620W unit is perilously close to the 750s in terms of cost. So why not go with the 750, you can upgrade later, right? All this said, unless you're pretty rich or have a fantastic deal from your electricity supplier, the figures I posted about having the three 8800s would make a lot of people think twice about upgrading much in their system to add to their energy usage, so whilst having upgrade potential is always nice, in the power consumption department it's not always as relevant as one might think. In the example posted before there's over 200W of headroom if you use a 620W corsair, and the units have been stress tested sufficiently to say that they could run all day maxed out. Nobody in their right mind would do this, but as mentioned before, there's 200+ watts to spare before you start getting short.
Either way, the 750W unit is a tempting proposition, but for the fact it doesn't carry modular cables. The purists among us reject the modular system as unnecessary, and claim it has known issues with connector reliability. If it happens, I've never seen it. A lot of people like their modular cables, what can I say?
Essentially, what it therefore boils down to is that you can either have lots of headroom and modular cables, or you can have fixed cables and loads of headroom.

I'm done now. If there's anything I've forgotten that sways the balance in the favour of the 750s, so be it, I give up.

On a slightly less tedious note, greensman, how is your coolermaster unit holding up, how accurate are the rails etc. ?

Whoa calm down guys. I guess all it boils down to in the end is Performance(750W) vs Convenience(650W).

Snow fairy? Sorry rob, you lost me there!
@Abuzar: It does indeed. If a 620W Corsair failed in any reasonable period of time (let's say <5 years) running that system with some additional hard disks later added, and an overclocked CPU, I'd be very surprised. The build quality of the units is so good, the overhead you need is surprisingly slight. Even with these modifications, you'd probably have a good hundred watts spare, which is plenty.

And to add, if I get another smug remark saying I'm misleading people and telling them to buy the wrong stuff, you can get stuffed - I'm leaving this thread for good.
After 4 years and thousands of posts, why would I suddenly turn rogue and spam the forums with wrong advice?

Well, indeed. I'm on the brink of leaving the entire site for good, so I could do with a bit of cheering up.
On this note, I found this:

Hi Guy's,
I'm not gone after all! I'll be around but I'm going to do less posting for a while as I need to get away for a bit to see what I can learn about the latest tech!

I thought answering this was the perfect time to say that I'm back

He was asking if...the (3) voltage rails...were showing...the proper range of voltage...in other words...are the rails within the proper tolerances...or...is the P/S stable...

OK sorry for the OT
......... BUT Lp made me do it!!!! How's that for Class Clown???? hehehe.

What progie are you guys using to monitor your system (you know temps, voltages, and such) and should I check my "stability" with something other than software??

Hope all get my weak attempt at humor...... :P if you don't...

I'm too tired to make a witty response to your "stability" right now lol.

Well of course you want to use software! That's the stuff that GOES unstable right? It's not like humans can go unstable and go kill Mr. Jay Gatsby can they?

Well, I tried. Goodnight all.

wow im gone for like 12 hours and look what the whole power supply thing turned into....
650 is too close according to lp
750 is overkill according to sam

sounds like a 700 watt p/s is in order

ok im split between these 2

Thermaltake W0106RU Complies with ATX 12V 2.2 & EPS 12V version 700W Power Supply $109 after MIR (it doesnt say crossfire support, will that be a problem?)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153039

OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W Power Supply $105 after MIR (this one does have crossfire support so im kinda leaning towards this one.)

The Thermaltake and OCZ units are both excellent, and having owned the former (albeit in a 750W version) I can say it's well worth having. It's not SPCR quiet, but it's pretty quiet up to a 300W load. After that it's not quite so pleasant, but if I'm honest, not many PSUs are beyond that point.

Here's some pretty good RAM for cheap.... link to OCZ Reaper Ed.

btw I wouldn't be afraid of that Cooler Master 750W, it's ok to get to much power. :D

Well indeed, someone I know has a 1300W unit to power a single 8800GTX (lol), and it doesn't do him any harm, he just spent an unnecessary extra £100. Mind you, given his wealth, not sure that really affects him too much!

it will increace his leccy bills. this is because PSUs are most efficient at 70-80% load. thats when the real 85%+ effiencyy comes. thast why, he will have a lot lower efficiency, as he will be using about 30-40%. this means it will have to draw more from the wall to change to the amount the components need, and the extra enegry will be excess heat, which makes the components run hotter, and will caus the cooling to work more, and if there are mobo assisted fans to spin more.

This is true, although I think at worst his PC will use 10% more power, so up to a maximum of around £30-£35 a year. Dual graphics waste far more power than this, as much as £500 a year.
