I'll bet it's me that warped your time continuum, space continuum, whatever. sorry, I just assumed everybody has widescreen monitors by now. my bad. I will resize. BTW you owe me now (only jking).

Haha, it's funny, despite the monitor I have I typically view afterdawn in a window so I can see other applications whilst I'm posting. As such your graph warped my screen ever so slightly! :)
Thanks for your help so far Mort, I'm going to try CAS5 and see if it'll run at 840 like that. I'm guessing 5-5-5 for the first three timings, what should the last one be, 18?

Interestingly enough, Everest reports that my RAM is only CAS4 capable at 540mhz. At 800mhz it says it's CAS5 latency, despite the product name. Any ideas why that might be?

Also, my CPU voltage switches between 1.163V and 1.325V, and my CPU between 2.1Ghz and 3.15Ghz. Have I got a powersaving feature running I didn't know about?

you can try 5-5-5-15. not sure why everest only shows your memory as cas 5 at 400mhz. are you postive all four cards are cas 4? not sure about your voltage differences either. maybe you've got a bad voltage regulator. I'm sure you're aware that it is harder to OC with all the dimm slots full.

Yeah, I was well aware four slots would make it harder to overclock, but since my existing overclock worked fine with the added RAM, I was happy to add it. I've checked and all four sticks are definitely CAS4.
My Core voltage had reset to stock, and both C1E and EIST were enabled in the BIOS, so I disabled those and upped my core voltage back to it's previous value of 1.39V.
There's no feature to change my RAM timings in the BIOS! I spent a long time reading through each feature, and it's just not there!
I had no idea that feature wasn't included in the stock BIOS, or I wouldn't have recommended this board so many times. Maybe revision 2.0 comes with it, I'm not sure.
What I've tried doing is upping the FSB to 396 rather than 350 and setting the multiplier to x8, so I can get the RAM to 396x2=792mhz. I'll see how that goes. So far so good...

I can't remember for sure (been a long time since I used gigabyte) but on gigabyte mobos don't you have press f2 or something once you get into the bios to get to advanced settings? you might want to ask Russ. there's got to be a place to set the timings.

edit: nevermind. thanks abuzar.

Guilty as charged...
:)
Thanks for pointing that out, will have a look. Despite the higher memory speed, and slightly higher clock speed my CPU earns me 50 less in 3dmark under its section...

As far as the motherboard goes I had to read it to figure out how to sort out the case panel connectors! I wish I had my Asus EZConnector back lol!

I'll try that and see what happens.
Thanks for the advice guys,
to Mort, Lp and theone: Shake hands and make up? :)

Update:
Found the advanced settings - cheers Abuzar.
Worryingly when set to Auto, the values of 5-5-5-18 had been allocated, and I remember this being the case with my Asus board as well, with the same RAM. All the labels on the memory are CAS4. Is one of them false?
Incidentally, speedfan is unable to tell me anything about my RAM whatsoever, other than that I have four sticks of 1024Megabytes, totalling 2048Megabytes.

Can you say O RLY?
:( - my ver. of CPUZ is v1.36.
I'll try the newer version.

......

Addendum:
All four slots read exactly this:
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8162/cpuzram1jc0.png

Main tab reads like this:
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/9793/cpuzram2lk4.png
The settings which I have changed are:
Vcore: 1.40V
FSB Voltage: +0.1V
RAM voltage: +0.1V
Automatic voltage adjustment on
C1E, EIST off
RAM timings: 5-5-5-18 - all others left as default.
RAM overclocking is set to Option 1.

Sam, your settings show that your memory IS rated 4-4-4-12 at 800Mhz. Motherboards don't automatically detect EPP settings, you will have to set those yourself, as they go by JEDEC.

Some sandra tests:

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/3141/newtestsmemoryav5.png

How are these in the grand scheme of things? It's been a while since I've used sandra so I forget what a good result is.

Abuzar: Thanks, good to know I haven't been conned! :) Why does the board automatically choose 5-5-5-18 then, for the same reason?

That's because that's your JEDEC rating. It's not using the enhanced profile Corsair shipped it with, which it 400Mhz at 4-4-4-12.

Yeah plus if you have to losen timings just to get 40mhz more, it's only going to hurt your performance. That's why I don't take my memory higher, at 4-4-4-12 it only goes to 920Mhz.

Well currently I'm limited to 700mhz if I use CAS4. At least I think I am. Last time I tried the system took issue with running at 840mhz memory speed, and the timings were set to automatic, so presumably CAS5.
Am I better off running slow RAM or looser timings?

Honestly I don't know about 700Mhz. If I were you I would just keep it at 700Mhz just to avoid stability issues.

You know I forgot about your 9x multi. Why don't you change that to 8x, set your FSB to 400, your Memory Multi to 2.00 and timings to 4-4-4-12. It should work, your memory is rated for it. Also you can set the mem voltage to +4.

+0.4V? Are you sure? That sounds a bit on the high side to me. I'll see if I can get action with the 8x multiplier and CAS4. That worked for me last time, but I didn't set the memory timings on that occasion, and the end result was a lower score than usual. I'll give that a go and post the results, then I'm off to bed. It's 3am! :)

I tried +0.1V lol, presuming that the initial voltage was 2.1, not 1.8.
Anyhoo, just tried using an FSB of 396mhz, RAM at 792 and multiplier x8, CPU at 3.17Ghz. I get EXACTLY the same score to the mark in 3dmark06, 6877. In Sandra though, my memory bandwidth is 440MB/s higher, at 6.33G/s rather than 5.89 like before. So far it seems stable, I think I'm going to leave it like this for now, and maybe play around later on when I'm less tired and less likely to mess it all up!
Thanks for your help folks, makes a pleasant change for me to be on the receiving end!

Well, every time I've tried before, my PC will be stable at 3.16Ghz, but not at 3.20Ghz, 3.18ish seems to be the cut off point, I think that's due to my relatively low vcore. I'd like 3.2Ghz, who knows I may go to 1.40625V just to bag those extra few mhz, if I could be bothered. There's just something in me that doesn't want to go above 1.4V though. I like this processor, and I actually intend to keep it!

sam,

I couldn't agree more with abuzar. try to get your buss speed to 400 then your fsb/dram ratio will be 1:1. the memory should run at 800mhz, at 2.1v and at 4-4-4-12 no problem. from my experiences, the closer you can get your memory to its rated speed, the better it will perform, even better than overclocking it.

don't worry about taking the vcore a little over 1.4v. I've ran mine at 1.425 forever (well ever since I OC'ed to 3.6) and have had no problems. I really don't think any ill effects will occur until you have ran it at more than 1.45 for a prolonged time period. as always, watch your temp.

I think sorta like banned4gd does. lol. RAM is RAM to a point BUT be sure you get "quality" RAM and "compatible" RAM as well. Your mobo manufacturer should have some kind of "compatibility" chart for RAM and their mobo. :D

I'm NOT sam or Lp (thank goodness....hehehe) but I would really look at your setup and determine the LEAST amount of power you will use at PEAK performance and go at least 100W over that. My personal opinion is that you will need that power at some point. If you OC your system then it will draw more power, if you add loads of goodies in there it will need more power. And so on. But in the end it's your decision and we're just here for suggestions and advice. TAKE advice from whoever you want to but I say again MORE power will not hurt you if you buy a 750W p/s. :P

good luck to you........ ;)

arent quad cores essentially *useless at least for now, considering there isnt and program or OS that utilizes all 4 cores?

and a word on the wireless mouse/keyboard, im using a cheapy, $30 mouse and key combo i picked up at target a couple months ago...responds on a dime and no keys are fading off...of course im not sitting there with a knife and shaving the tops of the keys...i also have a $2 rosewill keyboard which i use on my ps3...no fading keys there either...

CPU-Z RAM

HWMonitor...I like this progie, it seems to give accurate readings...thanks guys...

I know this doesn't tell you guys much but I thought I would post anyway. ;) Special thanks to Russ and Boozer for their help. I'm slow sometimes on things and knowing what to do in an OC still escapes me but 3.735Mhz on air with 4-4-4-12 timings doesn't seem to bad. :) I'm sure that I'll need some more tutelage to take it further but I'm tired and don't want to make any mistakes right now. :D

....gm

add:
Sandra arithmetic ....

The cpu is running pretty cool, 25C with the cores at about 27C-29C. ;) It peaked at 50C when the test was running. Is that about right?
