but that's the point, you don't need to leave the 6850 at stock voltage. With the 8400 you do!

im not following you here sam????
with the E8400 i have. im running at 3.7ghz at the stock volts 1.225v
ive taken the volts up to help with the 4.0ghz i tried. ive taken them up to 1.300v no higer it let me run at that but i wasnt stable im sure if i took it up to 1.35v or even a little higher i could have gotten stable.

Greensman has the E6850 at 3.6ghz i think he has his vcore up from stock, im not 100% sure on that so GM chime in here..lol

i like greensman was going to get the E6850 until the E8400 came out when it was time to buy. and the E8400 was about $80-90 cheaper, so that was the selling point for me.

The cache is a bonus, but I'm sure you could make well beyond 4Ghz stable with a reasonable Vcore with the 6850 (say 1.43-1.45V that kind of area).

By the way, in the UK the E6850 and E8400 are about the same price. The E6850 is £120 and the E8400 is £130.

here's a compairason from the E6750,6850,8400,8500
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcom...N82E16819115036

all except the 8500 are under $200 a $20 difference from the 3.

as far as the voltage goes im sure if i want to try and go up to 1.43-1.450v i could get 4.5+ stable. but with my temps i dont want to go that high, also. as with mort and his E3110 Xeon im sure as hell he could get 4.5ghz easy with a little more volts.

dont get me wrong im not trying to argue which is better here they both are awsome CPU's the E8400 has the bigger L2 cache 6mb. and at the time like i said was 80 bucks cheaper. i think with a better board i could do even more with it than i have now. and thats not really much considering my knowledge of this stuff.

i guess in the long run, im happy with what ive got and done with it. and thats all that matters if you/the builder is happy....lol

:)

yes your 100% correct. but they were worried about that on the first batch of the E8400's since then intel has worked with that, letting you go with even higher volts and not have to worry with the electron migration.

tbh im not gonna go that high with the voltage ar the OC. i tried 4.0ghz it ran with the little amount of volts i did add to it but im not going any higher for the fact of my heat issues plus im not 100% sure if i have one of them newer produced E8400's when intel sent me the new CPU

like a wise man here once said to me. intel wants you to OC these cpu's so they can have the braggin rights. and they are going to do whats nesecary to allow us to do it. they arent going to flat out tell you yea go ahead and oc the hell out of our CPU's just for the fact of warranty issues. but they arent dumb, they know its gonna happen and they want there product to be the best...

i'm sorry sam if youare thinking im messing with ya. im truely not. i am actually enjoying this. i can actually add something to the convo, that i know about...lol

rob I like these too. link
If I was looking at one and already had a floppy then the SIIG might be the answer or if NOT looking for a floppy then the Silverstone with added Firewire and USB 2.0.... ;)

Rob was right on what I did with the E6850... 3.7 stable but backed it down to 3.6 just because. :) I'm not sure if my limiting factor was me, the mobo, or the cpu BUT I gave up on trying to reach 4.0 just for the sake of it. lol. My system runs very cool for the OC and it's ABLE and STABLE!!

rob it's nice being able to add something to the convo, innit?? :P

Haha surely the rumble comes after the lightning? :P

You're right about the increased vcore limit, but from what I gather, it's still far more of a problem with 45nm CPUs...

the 6850 and 8400/3110 are all good processors. here are the benefits of the wolfdales: full 6M cache as opposed to 4M shared cache as with the conroes, they use less energy, more OCable. sure there is a chance of electro-migration but this is true with any cpu that is excessively over-volted. further tests have revealed that the wolfdales are not anymore prone to electo-migration than other C2D cpus.

the 6mb cache (not shared) is what attracted me to them. less energy and good OCability are just bonuses. I really want a 9450 quad core now. as with the 8400/3110 the L2 cache is what I'm attracted to. 12M L2 cache. the 9450 won't OC as high as my 3110 but with it being quad core and having 12M L2 cache, it will run circles around my 3110 at stock 2.66ghz and should OC to at least 3.6ghz, probably a tad higher.

I very seldom agree with Morty but sometimes he just makes some sense.... hehehe. J/K.... he's a really smart fella....

Morty I'm all over that Q9450 in a year or so I guess. It's just difficult to justify the price with the Q6700 as an interesting buy right now tho.... Q6700 link at the EGG

Got my case and HDD today... :D Only thing is I'm to tired to deal with it right now!!! I'm do some building tomorrow!!!

How much more will a Q6700 overclock from a Q6600? Is it REALLY worth the 100 dollar difference in performance?

It's actually $60 NOT $100. ;)

Is it all about how much something will OC or how it performs out of the box?? Who really knows but I'd be more willing to pay a couple more bucks for the Q6700 for that guaranteed performance. Boozer you have been very lucky and I hope it holds up but at some time you're gonna get a "sub-par" cpu and NOT get the HUGE OC that you've been getting... I know, I know, you love to OC and sell your systems but I'm talking about keeping a system longer than I keep a pair of underwear!!! lol. :P

Still mulling over the Q6600 vs Q9450 debate in my head. Electronmigration accounted for the 9450s still seem to overclock reasonably well, but they're a full double the cost of the 6600s... I'm not sure that's something that can be justified. How much different really is the power consumption?

I ran FAH for a while and never got that. I stopped using it because it wouldn't work properly in dual core and kept forgetting which work units it had done.
