I get my Japanese model PS3 on Friday and I know I'm going to need to update it out of the box. Which way should I update to v1.11:
-North America Sony site
-Japanese Sony site
-Through the "System Update" on the console
On the North American Sony site it says "This update is for customers who own PS3? systems sold in North America. DO NOT update your PS3? system through this Web site if you purchased your system outside North America. There is no guarantee of proper operation with other models sold outside North America." Has anyone with a Japanese PS3 done the upgrade using the US Firmware? Is there a difference? Thanks for the help.
Ok so I got my Japanese PS3 today, I used the update from jp.playstation.com and it works great. It plays US DVD's just not US PS/PS2 games but I have a modded PS2 so most of my games are burnt anyways. And when it connects to the net it's on Jap severs.

I don't know what "SOnsotre" is but to answer your questions, when you first start it up it will ask you to select a language. After selecting english everything will be in english. BTW I only speak and read english too ;). Firmware question you have two options one download it using the console, but it will be a bit slow because it connects to the japanese sever. Two, and is what I suggest, get a USB thumb drive that's 128mb which are dirt cheap and go to google translator and put in this address "http://www.jp.playstation.com/ps3/update/" to download the updates, the link is the Japanese playstation update site. I'm not sure if the US updates work so to be safe I use the one ment for the machine. After the update is done downloading make a folder named PS3 on the thumb drive(it has to be in the root folder, I'll explain in a minute). in side that folder make another folder named UPDATE. Put the file that was downloaded in that folder, put the thumb drive in the PS3 and goto the second icon(settings) and click "System update" then "Update via Storage Media."
Setting up thumb drive lets pretent your thumb drive is d:, this is what the structure will be:
D:
\_PS3
\_UPDATE
\_PS3UPDAT.PUP
I'm not sure if the Sony store is the US one but it's all in english so I'm guessing yes. Yes it will play US and JAP DVD's, all PS3 games, all Blu-ray movies, all CD's and NTSC-J PS/PS2 games. I suggest you buy Resistance and go online with it, my name on there is [PMC]USMCEnglish. One thing about online gaming with a Japanese console is it runs off of there servers not US ones, so for me they is a 13 hour difference so all the good gaming is at around 2:00am-10:00. I work night crew and I'm about to move to Japan so it works for me. Now here's the catch if the game only has US servers like Motorstorm will then we can connect to then just fine. Hopefully this helps out a bit, when you get your PS3 up and running add me to your friends list PSN ID:USMCEnglish.
