Sounds like a load of crap to me but source/link ?
yantz, no such thing happened to me. and yeah you ALWAYS have to switch off the ps3 properly, either by "standby" button on ps3 or via the XMB menu. Never use the switch at the back directly!
hi its me again
this is the quote of what i told abaut:
Boot PS2 Backups on PS3 via Soft Swap Method!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"A method has been found to play PS2 backups on the PS3! Via taking off the metal cover on the Blu-ray drive, removing plastic cover, unplugging sensor and cutting a circle on the top cover you're on your way to acheiving this. Boot the PS2 DVD and then wait for it to load up, hold the PS button and quit the game. Slide the cover back and down and push down on the disc secure magnet, this will STOP the LASER but not stop it from spinning! Swap discs and push X to boot a PS2 backup. This has been tested as WORKING on v1.10 firmware. Swapmagic is only required for PAL conversions and CD backups.
"
we can: stop the motor!!
we can: put out the disc without drill a hole...
but we can't : stop the laser!!
there is the link - http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread....0a63539&t=44652
so maybe we have a solution for the laser...
waiting for your answers guys and for yours - tsrp3...

The problem with booting ps2 backups using ps2 orig. games could be a number of things. What seems to be the most common problem is the media people burn to. I know the PS2 was very picky about what media was used to play backups, as well as the gamecube for that matter. It wouldn't surprise me if the PS3 was the same way.
What I've found gives you the most bang for your buck are the HP DVD+/-R disks. The +R disks are usually Orange, and -R are Red, if they haven't changed the disks since I got them. I've had one legit bad disk out of about 75 so far.
If thats not it, make sure you're waiting for the disk to stop spinning, don't want to blow out your laser. Also, CD orig. can only boot CD backups, as well as DVD orig. can only boot DVD backups... I think the same goes for DVD DL disks too.
Hope some of that info helps :P

well honestly i wonder what kind of crazy 14yo wrote this shit.
"push down on the disc secure magnet, this will STOP the LASER but not stop it from spinning!"
pushing down the magnet will just forcefully stop the MOTOR from spinning, doesn't help in any way.
I wonder if that dude even openend his br drive to see how it works.

well i did this mod and i think i broke my ps3 bluray drive because if it (the disk just kept spinning at some ridiculous speed and wouldn?t take the disc in - cause i didnt cut the motor wires)I rang up sony, said it didnt work - said "my ps3 wont accept discs" they asked where i lived and they sent me a refurbished one and i gave my broken one (swapped it) this all happened at my door through a courier. Sony havent even rang me back for it being damaged at my fault(been 3 weeks now) (I lost some screws and the warranty sticker was damaged ( i applied a lot of heat to the sticker so i could peel it off with out it saying VOID however there was a large mark where i applied heat, peeled it off half way then applied more heat (used a hairdryer) and this was all for free.
So what I am basically saying is try ringing up sony and they may replace it for you

my sticker already shows the void word coz i didnt know bout the heat trick and also the wires of the motor and sensor are now joined by soldering iron so i think they will find ut what i tried to do but im going to try and call them to see what happens:(

well the soldering dont matter cause my soldering (as i now found out because of it) was pritty mashed up. you cause always try and give them a ring and if they do complain then say you didnt know that that matterd or some rubbish excuse! but my sticker was "damaged" but didnt say void and if they did open it all the screws were missing so it would of been obvious that i had opened mine. you could ask a friend if you can "borrow" his ps3 and swap the stickers. But on a serous note you can buy a faulty ps3 of a well known generic auction site (not sure if stating sites are allowed - how am i supposed to remember full t+c's) and swap the stickers. but when i looks faulty ones go for quite a lot anyway so....

ok the ps3 is gone for repairs but when i get it back i am going to try it again so i think i wasnt supposed to take out the ribbon thats attached to the reverse side of the board which is highlighted in the pic above.do u think that by removing this ribbon it can cause the ps3 to stop sucking the disc in and therefore it would need to be reset by sony?when i tried this mod i took out the whole baord thats in the pic above instead of just lifting it up alittle to send the wires through.please sum1 help coz i realy wanna do this mod.

?
Of course it won't work without this board.
On the top-right of this board is a small switch which tells the motor to stop moving if a disc has been completely sucked in o_O

hey. I did a successful mod about a month or so ago. Had no problems with it.
It played normal and copied PS2 games fine.
However, I hadn't used the PS3 for copied PS2 games for about a fortnight, and today, I put in a PS2 disc, both copy and normal and nothing came up on the screen. Legit PS3 discs work fine.
The only thing that changed on the PS3 is since when it worked, and now, is the firmware. ATM I am on the latest FW 2.42.
Has anyone else tried it with 2.42? Does it still work?
If it does, then I`m afraid I've fallen victim to the dead laser.....
If however it turns out to be the works of the FW, does anyone think rewiring the PS3 to original will fix it?
Very veeeeery frightened...

Maybe you burnt out the DVD portion of your drive. Have you tried watching a DVD? Have you tried a swap with a CD based ps2 game? I hate to tell you but I think your DVD drive is shot.

I can confirm 2.42 still works OK. Using mitsubishi blanks. Always waiting for the screen saver to kick in before swap. And always removing the backup when ps3 is switched off.
Worked fine since day 1 following the above.

When my motor went I looks on the interweb but i could not see any drives or things. But I live in the uk and you cant but anything decent and useful (spare drives etc) and when you can (IE. PS3 :)) they cange it (without Emotion Engine etc :() and charge us more for it! ok maybe a touch about exaggeration about buying ANYTHING usful buy hey! oh yea if you used heat to peel of your sticker and stuck it back on your ps3 in a diffrent place and it dont look TOO damaged you can try sony, mine LOOKED DAMAGED it had Lighter/darker patches where i had peeled it half off and stoped the apply more heat and used hair dryer! (I did as you'd know if you been reading all the posts!) and dont say you and opend it - they never asked that but they ask have i had given it a knock(errr no?)
