Page 4 of this thread has all the correct settings to make XBMC work! Try those settings first and see if there is a change!

I'd also look into Static IP Addressing, maybe there is a DHCP error.

I want to try and start using XBMC with a wireless connection so that I do not have a cord running all over the house

will the official Microsoft Xbox Wireless Network Adapter allow me to do this or should I try something else

Hi there Chunkhead - hoping you can help me out. Not to familiar with networking.

I've got setup B (Computer and Xbox connected through router).

I've got the evo x dash. I have set that up so I can ping my xbox from my computer - and also ftp to it no problems. But I can't get XBMC to access the shared folders on my PC.

I'm using Vista Home Premium BTW.

I have followed your sets going through the network setup within the settings area of XBMC. And on my pc i have set up a restricted user called xbox. (well, i think i have done it....vista is different to your xp explaination).

Now, when I go to "video" and browse through to SMB Network....it brings up a username and password prompt for my routers IP address. But xbox, xbox wont work. Should it be asking for my routers IP address, or my computers? I think I have an IP set up correctly on my PC. Similar to how its done in XP. I have added dns addresses that my isp gave me, and set them in both my xbox and router. So hopefully the pc side of things is all sorted...

I Can browse down to "WORKGROUP", and click it and it displays the name of my computer "MIKES-PC", but once again it asks for a username/password, with xbox/xbox not working.

Please help if you can....i'd really appreciate it!

You've forgotten to add the user "xbox" to your PC.

Setup a new user account (limited) in Vista called 'xbox'. Give it the password 'xbox' and then give 'xbox' permissions for each folder you wish to share, just like in the tutorial on page 1!

;)

Thanks for getting back to me chunkhead. I think I mentioned that I have set up that user on my account on vista. I went to control panel, user accounts, manage another account, create a new account. In Vista, the account type can be either standard or administrator, and I choose standard. It has a username "xbox" and password "xbox". But even after I set that, xbmc is still asking me for a username/password.

Hi again,

I have that screen set up correctly. I just upgraded to the latest stable build of XBMC as I realised that I was working off a very, very, very old copy. Took me a while to get a new copy installed....but I managed it. But, unfortunately I still can't gain access to my shared folders. I'm going to leave you with as much detailed information as possible. First about my Router & PC details, and finally about my various xbox settings.

Control Panel>Network and Sharing Centre:
"Network Discovery" = on
"File Sharing" = on
"Public Folder Sharing" = on
"Printer Sharing" = off
"Password protected sharing" = on
"Media sharing" = off

How I shared my folder:
----------------------------------
I navigate to "public". Right Click "public videos" and select properties. Navigate to sharing tab. Click share>Select xbox from the drop down list and click add. Change to "reader" status. click "share". Now, back in sharing tab of properties, I click advanced sharing>click on permissions>click add>type in xbox>click check name, then click okay. Now advanced sharing is complete.

Okay that's everything. I am still able to ping the xbox's IP and connect via FTP.

If I scroll through to the main menu to my video:

Click on WORKGROUP (smb Network), I get the following error:

Click on SMB Network share, I get the following error:

I havn't touched sources.xml. Do I need to modify anything in there?

Good morning Chunkhead,

I made your recommended change, but no, it didn't work.

This is getting quite frustrating :(

I feel like I went a step backwards when I installed the latest version of XBMC. With my old copy, I could at least get into Workgroup, and see my home PC - Mikes-PC - come up on the screen....I just couldn't access it. Now, I can't even get into Workgroup. Do you recommend that I roll back to the old version?

Networking an xbox should never be this hard. Have many people had vista/xbmc issues in the past?

I've heard "ccXstream" being mentioned on various forums. Do you suggest I give this a go instead og samba?

Ok, have looked into it a bit further and I might have a solution.

You say that you are sharing the 'Public' folder. I don't do that, I share personal folders from my HDDs.

According to the Vista helpfile...

You've allocated the public folder to 'xbox'. You can't do that! You need to either make it available to everyone or change the folder you are trying to share.

I personally have a folder for each type I want to share (TV, Movies, etc). With that done, then you can set permissions. Just not on the Public folder!

:)

Okay, I will try that when I get home. I also have some personal folders shared :) - such as "Videos".

BUT that "Videos" folder is sitting inside of my folder "Mike" which is another user on the computer. Should I have my shared folders sitting outside of the users folders..? Perhaps...

I got it working! I used ccXstream. I so feel like I cheated. But hey - it's working, I guess I can't complain. Just wish I didn't have to start ccXstream every time I wanted to use XBMC :P...

Thanks for all your help chunkhead.

I'd still be looking into what is causing your problem. It'll be something simple, nobody else is having issues!

Ok Chunk, I need to pick your incredibly large brain again.

I have gotten my home network setup using my LinkSys router, (1) XP Pro PC, and an Xbox. All see each other and watching movies/ftp between them is OK.

I am adding a Win2k machine to the network via straightthru cable to the router. The 2k machine does have internet via the router.

I understand the XP Network setup disk will not work with 2k so I have basically cloned all the network settings by setting them all up on WORKGROUP and I wente into the 2k IP settings and created an IP address 1 digit off of the IPs I am using for the XP machine and the Xbox.

LinkSys Router - 192.168.2.1
XP - 192.168.2.2
Xbox - 192.168.2.3
2k - 192.168.2.4

I can ping the 2k machine from the XP machine but not Xp from the 2k machine. They also cannot find each other through Network Neighborhood -> Search for Computers.

What obvious step am I missing?

Thanks up front Chunk.
