4th Gen Ipod Problem Please Help

I have a 4th generation 20g Ipod and I've had it sync to my office computer now for the past year.

I have moved my music to an external hard drive (14,450 songs) and have taken it home.

Now I thought that I would just have to reset or reformat the Ipod so that it would work if I now sync to my home computer, where my daughter syncs her Mini to.

NO....

I thought that you could have different Ipod's use the same itunes, is this NOT correct?

After a pain staking process I reformatted my Ipod so that I could sync to my home computer but every time I hook it up it tells me that the Ipod is corrupt and that it needs to be reformatted, well I try and it won't work.

Then the Ipod get's into this "do not disconnect loop" and will not let me disconnect it. Then it starts telling me that there is an error and shows a file on the Ipod saying to go to apple support.

WTF?????

I even tried this whole process on a NEW laptop, with NEW itunes, and it does the same thing?

I am really confused, can someone please SAVE ME FROM THROWING IT AGAINST THE WALL!
