It's not a bad build but you could do better withing or just slightly above your current price range. The D900 series was just a transitional stage from stage leading to the release of Conroe. Any of the Allendales or Conroes are going to out perform it across the board. Also the Conroe are excellent overclockers.

This little jewel had been hitting easily above 3 GHz and it is about 30 to 38% faster than the D 940 depending on settings.

CPU

This is a very effective low cost cooler
CPU fan.

A reboxed one of the same.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134R

I would also recommend that you move up a bit on the motherboard to accommodate the CPU. The board below is a proven track record for getting the most out of a Core 2 duo for low dollars.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128012

These are just some suggestions for a minor upgrade over your original choices that will give you some real speed to go with them.

Excellent choices...However LastMastr is looking for a Micro ATX board for a small form factor case...

@LastMastr
Are you dead set on a Micro case?..
The case size will limit your options...

Although i would prefer a micro atx case...

What could we shoot for that is within the same price range, and if overclocked it can be in the 3ghz range?

Im looking for maximum performance for the least amount of money in actuallity.

Thanks for the help btw..

@Sophocles
Can that 1.8 ghz proccesor be amped up to a 3ghz seriosly?

@Lp
I want the compy for gaming btw...

Hmm thinking about it, i was thinking a dual PCIE slot motherboard, inother words, something SLI ready.. that be sweet.

I like the Sparkle Vid card alot theres a vid card built exactly the same but called XFX instead of sparkle. Linking the two would give me a a gig for a vid card with only 100 bucks..

Any mobo with 4 dimms and atleast 667mhz compatiblity will float my boat. As far as the socket, lets stick to 775.

And the case... well lets build it around this :D

Yes they can...It cannot be guaranteed...but it is quite possible...and seems reasonable attainable with the right components...Like I said earlier...
I would post this in the Official PC Building thread...You will get a lot more option from different people...a lot faster...

Sorry I never got past the memory when looking at the original specs and just assumed it was standard ATX.

Quote:

Yes quite easily. What makes this an exceptional overclocker besides its core is that Intel lowered the front side bus to 800 MHz. That particular core was designed to run at 1066 MHz which means in order for Intel to get it to speed they had to raise its clock multiplier which I believe is 9X. Just raising the front side bus to 10066 MHz would take it to about 2.4 GHz and this CPU will outrun the D940 at its stock speed. On the board I selected you should be able to comfortably increase the fronts side bus to 340X4 to 1360 front side bus (I have the same board running at 376X4 or 1504 MHz)which would increase the CPU speed to 3.06 GHz. It will probably go to even 3.2 GHz but then you start running into cooling problems. But at 3.06 GHz it should run like a champ on air. The only possible setback that I can see is the OCZ but at the speed that I suggested it should do ok.

Most people who purchase an SLI board rarely use the extra PCIe slot to run two cards. It's costly and generally no benefit unless you are prepared to really spend the dollars. A quality high speed single card will run any game made already.

Here a link to THG Video Chart...a good tool to gauge the performance of Video Cards...
http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html

Go with a single card...no real need for SLI...with the performance of the newest cards...don't be seduced by the 512mb on the 7300 card it is not considered a good gaming card...

I would look at some PC-6400 memory instead of the PC-5400 that you have listed...

I didn't see a Power Supply listed...What are you looking at?..

The 7300 is indeed a wimpy card and will only disappoint you if you attempt to play any relatively new games. If you're not into gaming then it will do just fine.

The 7300GT is a rebadged 7600GS, which is a lower midrange card, it can play some games, but only at lower details, and modern titles it will struggle at. Aim for at least a 7600GT to get good game performance, that's if you need it!

@LP

Yea id put it in that thread, i saw it, its soo big though i figure ill get lost in there.. so one thread to myself is great, you guys are helping alot btw..

Lest just say that 700 is the limit, but find me options saying that 700 is the max i could spend, but i might spend 1000.

And since ill probably be getting the Ultra Mid Tower case, we have more flexiblity now.

This is what the computer is for btw...

It needs to be able to handle any program easily and alot of them at once..

And it needs to be able to handle any video game for pc out now.

Im thinking of running Vista for Halo 2, Lost Planet, and Gears of War when its released.. becuase i like that they sync it with xbox live.

And if i wanted to run the vista 64 bit.. i could right?

@Sophocles

Ok... lets say i dont want SLI, what would be a great mobo and vid card combo...

The only reason i didnt pick out that proccesor in the first place, was cuz i didnt know it could be overclocked to a 3ghz. As long as it can go to 3ghz or faster, im happy.

Anyways..

Ill check in later for some updated and see what you guys got for me...

All good choices but here are couple of slightly more budget minded choices.

Although this card doesn't have as much memory it will still play any game out there with ease, including the famous forest scene in oblivion and it will lower your system cost by $100.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130082

A 700w power supply is great if you are going to add lots of extras, but with the stuff that we spected the system will run off of 550w comfortably. I use a 750W in one of my systems that also has a Peltier air conditioned cooled case,a water block cooling system (pump and fan to power), and an E6700@3.6 GHz (actually will run at 3.720 GHz) However I still recommend a minimum of 600W which will save you another $20.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341010

This is the case that I've used in many builds and for good reason, it is excellent and moving air through it. Its roomy on the inside, motherboard and power supply mounts easily and the screw holes are well drilled, the rest is completely tool free with the best no tool design I've worked with which makes moving things around a breeze. This will save you another $20. and since it comes with a CoolerMaster 80mm front intake fan and a 120mm exhaust fan you save an additional $13.98 for the fans and $4. for the finger guards. Total price reduction $38.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119077

I wouldn't touch anything else and if you can afford the upper priced system go for it.

Note that the rebates are added in the price that I gave which I believe is only on the power supply and graphics card.

$931.90 less $158.

$773.90

Whoops! Didn't spot it was a MicroATX case, in which case that Gigabyte mobo won't fit, and the 8800GTS probably won't either. Didnt realise you had to have a shuttle PC. Is this something you can change or are we stuck with small components?

The FSB is adjustable to well beyond what you will need. I have mine at 1504. To put that into perspective, that speed would raise the CPU speed of the E4300 3.384 GHz and although it is possible that it can reach that speed, I wouldn't count on it. Just set your sights for 3 GHz and then when you feel comfortable move up.

You can go lower on a graphics card and still get a pretty fair results. This would lower your build to under $700.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102067

I can't see you going much lower than that on anything without affecting the quality of the build. When you begin to trim price too much then eventually something has to go that makes a noticeable difference.

If you're not into playing games then you can safely trim probably another $80/90.

@LastMastr
The FSB is-1066/800/533MHz on the Gigabyte Board...

@Sophocles
I just built a media server for my Mom with that case...I'm a fan of Cooler Master Cases...I picked the case up from SVC for $50 last Black Friday with a $35 rebate...total cost $15...

However I was disappointed with the quality of mine...for the same reasons you listed as positives...

I Did not like the tool less rear slot guards...found them to be noisy...I also did not like the tool less system used on the 5" 1/2 bays...I didn't feel that they held the drives securely...

I also was not impressed with the airflow...I felt the 80mm intake was not adequate...I felt it needed a 120mm...I plan on installing one in the future...once I have time to Mod it...

The one thing I have learned about cases is...What one person likes...The next person hates...The case is probably the most personal choice one makes in a build...

Maybe the case I got was built on a Monday when all the workers were hung over...For me the case just did not seem to have the quality that I have grown to expect from Cooler Master...It wasn't the worst case I have ever used but it definitely was not one of the best either...

If you have not used the Chakra case...You might consider giving one a try...I think it is the best mid range case I have ever used...the 250mm door fan is dead quiet...I use the 2 120mm fans as exhaust...It gives the case amazing air flow...I really like how the 250mm fan washes the whole Motherboard with air...No Hot Spots...

perhaps, but like you say, personal taste. I find it very dull, and using all but the side fan as exhaust sounds a bit odd. Oh well, if it works for you!
I have my side fan exhausting rather than as intake because of my fanless graphics card. However, this only saves a couple of degrees so when I get a quiet power supply (so a couple of degrees no longer matters) itll probably go the right way round again.
