Don't forget it's not necessary to install all of the nero software it allows you to deselect quite a few bits of it's makeup.

You may be interested at having a look at this,it's called erunt,it works by creating a registry backup on restart the diff is you've come across the chooze another rest point crap that syst restore throws up,this proggy will make the change regardless,the downside is you have to manually remove it's created backup folders to clear hdd space,however you can burn them to rom http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/][/url]

Oh, I have the Dimension ElCheapo 2400. Just 256mb RAM (recently upgraded to 1.2gb) 80G HDD. And ONE lowly CD Drive. Honest.

I am not going to read the whole thread, however the log shows she has a DVD RW and also shes burning (what I consider to be poor quality discs ) at 16X

Nero 6.6.0.18 Reloaded and ImgBurm 2 co-exist peacefully on my computers even with Windows XP SP-3! I have used hundreds of those TDK CDRs and various brand name DVDs with few problems.
It doesn't pay to buy cheap hardware; so my computers are set up with internal drives (PLEXTOR PX-712A and PX-716A DL) burners with the older 8 MB buffers. These are getting hard to find now.
Nero 7 was full of bugs and didn't last a year before being abandoned. Nero 8 is loaded with junk programs that I'll never even use. Nero 6 will not work on the new Vista platform without a lot of software engineering and they have no intention of doing it.
Welcome to the world of trying to make one of the best burnware programs user friendly to both the newbies and veterans alike. It didn't work! There are stripped down versions of Nero 8, without all of that useless junk for download at www.9down.com and other warez sites...

Same here Quicksdraw! I have never bought a factory built machine; and prefer to build my own systems even if it costs a few more dollars. Test driving the Vista betas and RC-1 demos didn't impress me either. Some of my preferred programs (Nero 6 Reloaded etc) will never work on their new platform, which doesn't have those hardware/software compatability wizards, for older products.
Buying a machine pre-loaded with a bunch of demo-ware and the wrong 3rd party programs is a waste of money. What kind of fools throw their $50 at Norton anti-virus programs; when there are free alternatives like AVAST! which are even better? Buying parts from a Tiger direct is fine, if you know what you're doing.
All of our machines are custm built and some of them were the creations of the family's resident silicon Valley computer programmer...

Scourp, thanks for the info. I'll take a look at that tomorrow when I'm fresh. As far as, just putting certain Nero applications may or may not work. She seems to be having some sort of driver issue between Nero and USB.
Liz, just check out the specs and tell me which optical drives you have. I'm thinking, drive 1 is a CD-RW, and drive 2 is a DVD-ROM, you would swap CD-RW for a DVD-RW.
RE: ERUNT :- i was think'n of some of your customer machines & that particular one that destroyed the restore points, however it would depend on the persons competence as too whether it would be a good idea to install since the backup registry saves are held inside the WINDOWS folder inside a made sub folder of erunt unless it could be moved to a more safer place where deleting the wrong thing won't hurt..lol.. (or a shortcut)
Re: Nero :- not installing certain aspects of nero would not make any difference to whether it worked is my guess it's just that there was mention of bloated
@ liz: Internal lite-on 20x dvd dl r/w writers w nero 7 essentials is $60 nz new oem on trademe since your in oz your's will be much cheaper,as for realiability lite-on specialise in making drives they also make drives for other well known companies under branded names & yeah you can fit them into an external housing

cousinkix: Thanks for your input. I think that Nero has gotten way too big for its britches. Next thing, it will be offering to mix me a cocktail before dinner. As a matter of fact, I upgraded to 8 because I thought it was less buggy and bloated than 7, but alas I was wrong. Thanks for the tip- cdburnerxp. I had read about it, but was waiting for a recommendation. Small & simple is what I need.
ddp: I apologize for straying off topic. To answer your question, yes, that is my system with 1 minor variation; mine can accomodate 2G ram, I recently upgraded to 1.2gb from 256mb. My external burner is plugged into the back. I have heard one can take these apart and use the innards.
scourp: By oz did you mean Australia? No, I'm in New York. It was all that talk about my burner, Kanguru, and we were joking about Outback. Thanks anyway :-)

I tried that CD Burner XP Pro myself just to see how it worked. Not bad for free. No coasters. Nero 6 works just fine on my machines. No need to mess with 7 or 8, for what little else they can do. Buggy bloatware indeed. You might still find a sealed Nero 6 box for sale on zEBAY...

I tried the CDBurnerXP, and was able to add tracks. However, I got the error message "unable to start burn process". I guess it doesn't support my burner; there wasn't anything in the faq about that particular error message.

That is the chance you take when buying odd ball drives that most people have never heard of before and that may include these software companies. I had never heard of your Kangaroo model before now. There are also models like the Cheetah on Tiger Direct. Best to stay away from that stuff.
Check out those internal Plextor models, along with the Lite On, TDK etc. Try burning your audio CDs at a slower speed. I do my Costco TDKs at 16X (in about 5 minutes) even though this machine can do it at 52X. Speed doesn't always give me the best results...

You may be on the money. I did indeed get it from Tiger; it had good reviews but I should have researched further.
The interesting thing is that I tried cdburnerxp again, and the app froze. I thought the burner was ok, since just 2 days ago I was able to burn a DVD with DVDFab & ImgBurn. Maybe I need to get myself a new drive. Thanks for your suggestions.

Try a simulation burn at a slower speed. Maybe 16X Be sure to put a cdr in the drive or it won't even do that.
The regular Nero burning rom will even do iso/nrg images of music compilations. That way, I just load them and burn because the editing and everything else is already done...
