I have this computer and it was just upgraded with 1GB More RAM and another 60GB HD. Now, whenever the computer loads, it beeps for 2 seconds, nothing for 2 seconds, beeps for 2 seconds etc. If I turn it off and power it on again, it works fine. Does anybody know what the problem is?

reseat both ram sticks then go into bios to see if bios sees correct amount of ram. do same to hard drives.

I replaced one of the hard drives and it did it only once which was fixed by reseating the video card. I'll see if it happens again. And it is recognizing the 1.25GB RAM

Hmm, started to happen again and was fixed (as of now) by taking out the old 256MB RAM. Should a 1GB and a 256MB stick combination cause problems? The PC has a max RAM capability of 2GB

is possible the 2 sticks don't like each other or when the 1 gig was inserted it partially unseated the 256meg.

Another question. One of the hard drives in that failed a Hitachi DFT. It asked if I wanted to attempt to repair bad sectors and since it was a blank HD, I did. After that, I ran the test again and it passed. Since it already failed once, is it time to replacec the drive or could it have been a magnetic issue that was fixed by formatting?

won't be magnetic problem as there is 2 electric motors in the drive, a spin motor to spin the platters & seek motor to move the read/write heads back & forth. download hitachi diagnostics software if available to confirm that the drive is alright.

That's exactly what I had done, ran the Hitachi DFT which is the Drive Fitness Test, their diagnostics. It failed once and then passed. Should it be replaced. Also in another computer suddenly had diskcheck come up on boot and said multiple things were unreadable. Backed up data fine, formatted drive and restored data and now everything seems to be fine. Should I replace any of these drives? Both drives were tested with the Hitachi Diagnostics (DFT)

what did they fail at? rerun the test again & if still passes then is presumably alright but save your data not programs just in case.

One failed at reading sectors and passed after it ran the "Fix". The other one just said "Unreadable" when running a scandisc on boot because of some idiot who unplugged it instead of safely shutting it down. This one backed up all data fine and a format fixed the unreadable areas of the disc. This is where I think it was a file system corruption.

agreed on file corruption on 2nd drive. 1st drive keep an eye on it for a while to see if happens again.

Funny story, The computer froze when installing a hotfix so I rebooted and guess what...
CLICK...CLICK...CLICK...
hard drive failed. Occasionally boots and works, but since it clicked, I'm not trusting it anymore. Swapped the IBM 60GB with a Samsung 60GB that was laying around. Could heat cause HDD failure? I have 2 HDDs in the 3.5" slots that can only accomodate 2HDDs so the HDDs are touching each other transfering the heat to each other. Also seems that my primary 80GB maxtor gets warmer than the samsung.

yes heat can cause the hd to fail. how hot is the drive?

I don't know exactly in what terms you are looking but the best I can describe without having to get a HDD temp monitor from another computer would be that its hot to the touch and can get uncomfortable to hold it, or it gets as hot as the HDD slot on a laptop.

get a hd cooler fan or mount a fan in front of the hd to blow air over it.

On another computer I always get the "File Segment XXX is unreadable". I can access, backup the drive fine. What is the problem here, is it a dead drive or dying drive. I remember that it was fixed once by backing up everything, formatting and restoring but this happened again after about a week. Happened after an unsafe shutdown or reset, not sure which one. I also have 4 HDs in my computer, why does it only happen to this one?

is your psu a stock unit? because if it is, swap it out for a higher watt one. also, swap out the flat ide cables for rounded ones. that will get better airflow inside.

Agreed. That PSU doesn't look very powerful. Adding hard drives can cause big issues with naff power supplies.

The PSU is stock and about the cables, it is my friends so I'll ask him if he wants to change out the cables, I don't think he'll want to. The processor inside is an AMD XP, it doesn't get that hot anyways.

you need to swap out the psu, asap. using a stock one, while powering multiple hd's, cd/dvd drives, and a graphics card will result in a damage system later on. and don't get the cheapest psu you find. spend the money on a quality unit; maybe a modular one so it's not cluttered inside.
