I've been burning DVD's for a couple of years now with no major issues. My Asus DVD drive is quite old now and I'm wondering if that's the route of my problem. I'm hoping someone can help. First of all I've always used Nero Express and the "burn DVD files" option. It's what's always worked for me. One thing I've noticed is that it's taking ages to read the disc in the first place. Then one of 2 things happens. I get a "not responding" problem or it hangs about 3 quarters of the way through reading. I've noticed a clicking noise from the drive at this point today. Do I need a new burner? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. Is there any definitive way of telling that this is the problem?

things i would do

uninstall drive from device manager and uninstall controllers for the drive, that 2 uninstalls

reboot pc now

update firmware http://discinfo.rpc1.org/ use search VEIW/FIRMWARE update

use another software what is your full project?

do you have a nero log file to paste here?

also try updating motherboard ide drivers if your drive is ide/atapi not usb

what discs you useing the dye code info not brand name pls

uninstall nero with the nero v6 removal clean tool, then install again

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I'll get back to you tomorrow as that seems a complicated procedure. I'm fairly clued up but would like some guidance in case I run into trouble! Cheers!

Would this be a drive problem given the fact that I can play DVD's in it?

Hello again. I recently had a "power calibration error" and it turned out that updating the firmware on my burner did the trick. It's been operating fine (four months) - until now.

I'm suspecting the problem I'm having is the media - as I've coastered 5 DVD+R DL in a row - all with different burns/files. I haven't had problems with regular (dvd-5) burning.

Anyway, if one of you log readers could give this a look, I'd really appreciate it (Thanks, in advance):

uninstall any roxio ETC apps that use this driver CDRALW2K.SYS', then use roxio zap tool to rid registry problems...

then

uninstall nero then use nero clean tool for your version nero to clean registry, then install nero without installing Nero InCD you have 3 drivers for this inCD, they conflict with burning also, and i would update nero too

ok back to ya prob

looks like your drive doeant read your type/brand/dye code very well, try verbatim +DL

also i would dual layer burn with imgburn (guide is on there forum) read/follow it

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Rotary - thank you very much for your advice. However, I can't help but think I need a new drive as I've never had problems with these discs before.

see if the discs from ages ago are the same dye code as the log above

Disc Manufacturer ID: RITEK, Media Type ID: S04, Product revision number: 66

also i have had instances where a 50 packs of dvdrs 40 are ok, and 10 scrap...

Strangely I got past the read stage earlier but then it failed straight away when it went to burn. I've noticed that the discs are 8X as opposed to the 16X discs I was using. I have had successes with these though. Not sure how to obtain the dye code, etc.. Here's the log from the failed burn process:

CdRomPeripheral : ASUS DVD-ROM E608 atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off

your first log DMA was on ok for all 3 drives, so you have a DMA issue

ok

you still have the bad conflicting driver

use roxio zap tool.

your first disc was ritek now its this - Disc Manufacturer: UME01 -

try some verbatim or TY discs

you say you saw more info this time? well could be you got rid of the InCD that conflicts which is good as its packet writing software, now get rid of CDRALW2K.SYS'

once you used roxio zap tool you may need to uninstall controllers again and drive then reboot pc...

with the DMA you might need an ASPI layer? do this later...

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

use a tool called roxiozap to get rid of this file/driver - CDRALW2K.SYS'

this driver could cause the dma to be off this time round
-----------------------
the 2 types of dvdr you used may not gel well with your drive now, iknow people say used these for ages, but the dye found on dvdr's change brand names dont, so its hard to tell

verbatim and TY tend to stay the same and are the safest bet on dvdr media.
-----------------------
after removing CDRALW2K.SYS' we still have dma off we may need to uninstall controllers from device manager abd the drive and reboot pc

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Some developments this evening. After uninstalling the drives and controllers Nero now reads the disc. However, it fails the burn stage right away with an internal target failure.

Right, I've done the following - Downloaded Roxiozap which asked me about Easycleaner 4 or 5 or something. Anyway I clicked OK and was asked to reboot. I uninstalled my drives and controllers and rebooted the PC which then installed them back. Now my CD Rom drive is a bit picky as to what discs it reads. Some it does while some it doesn't. Before I did all this I managed to do a successful burn using Nero but then got the problem with the CD rom drive. This was happening even prior to doing the above. Do you think the firmware needs updating? I have a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D and an Asus DVD-Rom E608. Is it easy to update the firmware? I'm beginning to think there may be something conflicting. Any further help would be appreciated.
