I recently got several AudioBooks on CD's for an extended trip overseas. Would like to rip them into files recognizable and playable on my iPod (older 20GB non-video/non-color unit). I had no problems ripping the cd's into mp3's but putting them on iPod in a usable form is difficult. Although the rip produces files that appear to be usable, such as XXX Book\Chapter 1\Book Name 01a.mp3, book name 01b.mp3, and so on. However, when I put them onto iPod, iPod puts them into the library in an unusable order - i.e., in the library and on the iPod I see files such as Track 1, Track 2, 1a, 1b, 1,2, - all for the same book, or 3k, 3i, 1a, 1b, 2a, etc.
I have tried renaming the files in to such as "Disk1 Chapter1a, Disk1 Chapter1b, etc. but ipods still shuffles them when I load them. Some books start on Chapter 2, then go to 1 then to 4.
Any suggestions?

I rip using CDEx and in the Settings dialog, Filenames tab you can set up a unique and consecutively ordered file naming system.

So, are you saying that, rip the cd's in order of their disk number and, regardless of what the default name would be give each track a seperate and distinct name? In a 6 cd set, for example, Disc1, track1 might be called "The Truth 01a" disc1 track2 "The Truth01b" through disc6 track1 as "The Truth06a"?
Is there a better system? Does each CD retain a unique naming system that I can not see but that iPod can see? (I have noticed in the jumbled tracks, under the Author is the name of the book and things such as 01/01 after the name (I didn't put the words there!)And these authors names and 01/01's are not consistent from book to book)
This is confusing.

There is a cool thing you can do once you have the files organised with the names and order you want, to make it easier to listen

As .mp3 they appear in music so if you pause it a listen to a different track, when you re-play it you will lose your position.
You can change them to audiobook format, if your iPod supports that.

This is by converting them to AAC format usinf the iTunes encoder, then changing the file extension to .m4b
When you add these files to itunes they will appear in audiobooks, and with bookmarks meaning your location in the file is saved

Hope this makes listening easier :)

PS make sure you convert to stereo AAC as mono AAC can cause problems on older ipods

You can also just make a play list and they will play in order if you play the play list and have random off.
