I didn't find a forum for ipods, so here it goes. Is there any way to customise the music genres on the Nano to match my playlist names I made up in my itunes library & have my songs go into the named playlist I want & keep the songs in order (like all the songs from the same artist) without shuffeling them? Also; can I delete any songs on my ipod if I get sick of them? Thank You, isc49

The ipod forum is in the mobile device section.

I have a nano but haven't used itune in many years. I am sure what you want to do is name your playlist to match the genere. That will work for any audio manager. I think there is a way to remove items from your ipod with itunes but it is not obvious.

I use Media Monkey mainly because of the nice syncing abilities. It will allow a negitive sync. You can select playlists to sync if the playlist changes, MM will sync correctly. You can also change the playlists you want to sync. Sometimes it takes 2 syncs to remove tunes from the ipod with MM if you change the items in the play list. MM allows you to add generes. There are ways to remove unused generes so you can add and delete them.

2 words of caution. 1 MM or Winamp are much more confusing than itunes that allows very few choices. Many itunes users gwet culture shock when they open a full featured audio manager the give you 50 times the choices. The interface is busy. I would play with the app to make sure you like it before you sync. Uninstall itunes before using any other app to sync with your ipod. Itunes will trash your ipod if you become unfaithful while it is up and running. When you uninstall you can opt to keep all your files. If you change your mind you can install itunes without missing a beat.

MM will allow an itunes play list import. This is done by a script. Scripts are the most powerful feature of MM. Once installed, they alter MM to perform fancy reports and utilities. If you want to do something and can't find a script to do it it is likely you didn't look very well. I have always found a script that would do what I wanted. If you can't find what you want in the script forum you can post a request. Usually the reply is to point you to the correct script.

Here is a thread that you might want to read.

Mez, Thanks for the info, but it all seems so confusing to me. If I read you correctly, media monkey is harder to use than itunes? I'm a newbie when it comes to mp3 players; in fact the only reason I have this ipod is, my brother in law gave me his Old "Nano 2nd gen". @ only 1 GB. I was reading reviews & the "creative Zen" looked good, But I have this BIG itunes library that I have built up & have a lot of money invested in itunes. To me, $300. worth of songs is A LOT for I am on a fixed income. So I need something easy to use. I have aprox 400 songs in itunes, WHY; because I didn't know any better @ the time. I am a 59 yr. old disabled veteran on a lot of RX's which sometimes makes things confusing to me @ believe it or not, I bought my 1st computer 4 yrs. ago. I'm telling you this so you know where I'm coming from & why I need the easiest system to use, I.E. loading music, editing music genres, & finding out how I can put my songs back into my itunes library so I can add other music to my 1GB Nano... Thanks again! Much Appreciated!!

Actually, it is helpful to know where you are comming from. We get pretty brain dead by our age. Unfortunatly, your wants are not simple. Plus it sounds like you want to protect your songs. Your library is 4x the size of your player. You really should get away from itunes.

Before that you need to secure your library.

Are all your tunes in the library?

Did you buy all your tunes from itunes?

None of them 'like' to do that. They prefer to have music in their database that is permenent. Media Monkey and WinAmp are the most popular Jukeboxes. I am much more familiar with Media Monkey. I have never done this but you might be able to select tunes on a CD in Explorer and play them with a right click. Then in MM you should be able to do the same but send them to an attached MP3 device.

Something is wrong with the picture you paint. You have a tiny library. That is chump change to a computer in this age. If your computer is that cramped it will have performance issues. I bought a 500 G HD for $50. You can download an app that will clone your old HD to your new one. All computers can run at least 2 disks at once. I would use the clone as C: Other wise your computer will use up all your disk space and die a terrible death. Often the data on the disk is not recoverable. It is far cheaper and easier to address the problem now then when the disk is destroyed. I would empty you trash can right after you read this. If you have reservations ask build your own PC forum for help. You can also verify what I am telling you. If this is not your bag, buy the HD on the internet. The brand does not matter much but the type does. It is likely and IDE but you need to check that out. I Have seen a new Gateway for as little as 350 USD that came with a LCD monitor. Normally, I would say get an external drive for your music but if you only have single digits of gigabytes left your computer will die next year for sure if you use it evey day. Computers consume a few gigs of disk space in a year. Windows keeps copies of updates and all sorts of things.
