I agree with Creaky. AutoGK is the easiest that I have tried. It does a very good job and does it quickly.

I was wondering the same thing as far as dvd rippers go. I've been using clonedvd, but the output files are bigger than I would like to have. My question about autoGK is- will it override disc protection crap like CCS?

No, you need something like DVDFab or AnyDVD to remove the protections first. They are both updated frequently, but I use DVDFab, there's a (permamently) free version of DVDFab, perfect just for ripping and a paid, fully featured version (i have both). AnyDVD has a 21day free trial then it's pay only all the way.

Hi creaky and fellow members:
I would like to convert DVD to avi and need to know the steps. I'm a beginner at this level?
I have DVDFab Platinum so if I use DVDFab it will not only remove the codes but also shrink and convert the video to fit on a DVD5 or DVD9 disc. How does that affect the conversion to .avi format?
I gather I would save the file to folder on my computer in order for the converter program to pickup and convert to avi. I've seen some avi's as Xvid or DivX (I guess these are containers)???
You've mentioned AutoGK (free). Any others paid or free? Also can you edit these .avi's. If so how? Do I need another program to do this?
What are the appropriate settings for converting to avi: I would like to watch on a regular TV or wide screen what would the frame resolution, frame rate, bit rate and sample rate be? Is there a guide to help with this selection? Right now I find this part really confusing.
Sorry about the questions but I'm not quite too sure what to do until I learn.
Many thanks,
katydidit, Canada

Platinum produces pretty nice AVI conversions, though i have only used DVDFab to do this a couple or so times, there are quite a few settings and i've hardly even looked at the settings. I usually use AutoGK for all my DVD-AVI conversions. In fact i only even used DVDFab for converting as i had severe sync problems (using AutoGK) with the movie Liar Liar recently. The details are in one of the links i've provided at the end of this reply

To be honest i've never bothered researching the differences between the various formats; as long as i can (easily) convert and then play stuff, i'm happy :)

There are quite a few other converters, both paid and free. I'm one of those people that usually sticks to the same (few) programs longterm, i only really research/add programs to my arsenal if/when i hit problems with an existing program. I'm sure other posters will chip in with other suggestions. I've been using AutoGK quite a lot lately and i'm very impressed with the results, and with it's ease of use (i don't like spending ages messing with tedious settings, in my humble opinion an end user shouldn't have to waste time and effort with too many settings).
As to editing the AVI's i'm not sure what you mean. I purely convert DVD's to AVI for watching on my old type xboxes across the network via the awesome 'XBMC'.

again, i only like simple, we have a guide for AutoGK here somewhere, it's a nice and simple program to configure
edit- here's the guide ~ http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd_to_avi_autogk.cfm
Here's a few threads i've posted on recently re AutoGK, one of them details the sync problems you can sometimes come across in AutoGK and how to fix them ~

In that first link you'll see i personally use 1400MB for AVI's in AutoGK.

Hi creaky:
For the most part I would be converting DVD to avi. I have recorded some favourites from TV and would like to be able to edit out the commercials. Also, my camera using .avi as well. I figured if I was going to have to get a new program it might as well include an editor if possible.
I couldn't find any settings in DVDFab in order to convert DVD to avi. In the main menu it shows full disc, main movie, etc. which converts to a DVD format. However, there is the section for converting DVD to mobile. Is this the section that will convert to .avi?
I have to agree with you 100%. I don't have too many programs either and like to keep it simple. Also, I'm always concerned that too many may clash or conflict.
Appreciate the help and support,
katy

Yes. In the "Mobile" section, you will see the settings to create an avi file. It should be under the "Generic" settings.

Hi rtm27:
Thanks. I found it under generic - DVD to Mobile. The settings are preset but I went to DVDFab website and they have an Editor program that will allow you to customize your xml profiles to control conversion.
I'll look in to it and get back to everyone.
Thanks,
katy

Will DVD videos ripped by AutoGK be usable in video editing software like Windows Movie Maker or Premiere? I'm just hoping to make some reviews, and I'm already prepared (I think) to record my own video game footage onto a DVD for ripping.

Hi creaky and members:
I found the Profile Editor at DVDFab for customizing the xml profiles to control conversion.
Here is the website with the link at the bottom of the page:
http://www.dvdfab.com/docs/index.php/Main/Profileguide
It is freeware to be used with your DVDFab program.
I have yet to use this program but will try it. There is an update planned soon.
I forgot to ask about video codec for AutoGK, i.e. Xvid or DivX. I have different programmes on my system that may contain these codecs but I'm not too sure. I have Media Center 2005 with NVIDIA Gold Decoders, WMP11, DVDFab, ConvertXtoDVD.
Where would I download these codecs or would they come with an editing program such as Adobe Elements for video editing?
Is there a free program that would tell me what video codecs I have on my system. The one from Microsoft is only for Media Center.
Thanks,
katydidit, Canada

I personally swear by the K-Lite Mega Codec pack, i've used it on all my machines for donkeys years.

Hi creaky:
I've tried K-Lite packages and they caused major problems for my Media Center??!! It's a rather sensitive program and breaks easily. I've had no problems since I installed the NVIDIA encoders. Is there a way of just downloading the Xvid and Dvix codec only?
Thanks,
katy

Oh right, i've never used Media Centre.
As to individual codecs i've no idea, you'd have to do a search, the reason i moved to the codec packs was because i found separate codecs very problematic years ago.

You can install the codecs separately if you wish so. I did not get a pack either, too much stuff that I do not need. You can install Xvid and http://www.divx.com ; I also have ffdshow for everything else.

Hi Cyprusroom:
Thanks so much for the individual codecs. Appreciate it.
Hi Creaky:
It is convenient but has a lot of bugs. Also, the dvr-ms files are huge and take a long time to convert. My next system will not have it as a program.
