Get in Touch with The Place Where You Bought Your NEW computer, and see if need a Firmeware Update. Or You Can Download Nero Info Tool to find the Model and firmware that is installed on it now. Then, You can go to firmwarehq and find out if there is a Firmware Update yourself.

The company I got the new computer from disappeared shortly after.
Anyway, I did what you said and got the firmware update, and still nothing. I have verbatim and TDK disks, neither one is recognized.
I tried contacting LG too with no luck.
Thanks for your help. Any other suggestions?

I was stumped by an xp junkheap doing this a few months ago.. replacing the malware riddled and rootkit (securom) disabled os from scratch cured it.

Scum is suggesting that you might have a rootkit.
Here's some info:

RootkitRevealer (free) - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897445.aspx
RootRepeal (free) - http://rootrepeal.googlepages.com/
SanityCheck (free) - http://www.resplendence.com/sanity

Run one of the removers and see if it finds anything...
