Hi there everyone. I wasn't sure which topic to post this issue in, so I figured general audio would be the best place.
I recently invested about $100 into a sub-par 5.1 Dolby Digital home theater system/upconverting HDMIDVD combo. It is made by Aveis (I'm sure that will give you an idea of how sub-par it is!).
My issue is this. I purchased the unit because it has optical and coaxial audio. My goal was to connect my PS3 via optical audio into the AV/DVD combo, and in turn get at least 5.1 surround sound. What's happened is I've connected my PS3 via optical, I've set the output to optical, set the AV unit to every input possible, and I have no sound whatsoever. The best I can get is standard RCA, which only outputs into 2 speakers, and sounds quite horrible, as the speakers crackle even at a medium volume.
Is there something I'm doing wrong, or backwards? Do I potentially need another AV unit before this will work, or is this unit simply a piece of junk? If I haven't provided enough detailed information, please inform me and I will tell you everything you'd like to know.
I have actually tried both settings, and neither output any sound at all through the home theater speakers. Only input that will give me sound is the 2-channel AUX.
I've been researching the topic as best I can, and I'm beginning to wonder if the optical and coaxial on the AV/DVD combo are only meant to go out to another AV unit. I may be wrong, but that's the impression I'm getting. I think what I need is an actual AV unit designed for multiple inputs.
If I am wrong and it can work with the AV/DVD combo home theater I have now, please tell me! Thanks again!
Check the back of your unit and it will tell you if its OPT IN or OPT OUT.
It may also be that you might have to manually select the opt input on your system most cases (OPT AUX), can you please post the units model number then we can narrow it down abit more.
