Thought this was a tread to help folks on a budget and wanting to learn. Unless you're giving him a new mobo, then let's help use what he has in hand or by least possable. I would get that quality, used !865PE mobo. $50.00 is better then $400.00

Remember, new computer from that vintage, means new everything except maybe old EIDE optical & HDD on same mobo, but even that is down to "1" 2ch IDE now. Oh ya, you just might be able to use your old case.

Anywayz, we're all here to help make the best of what we do have.

What are your specs again? I need the CPU socket mainly. Motherboard model would help too.

@sleepy 92

Instead of wasting money upgrading that machine just go out and buy a $500 PC. Many of them come with 1 Gb of ram, Core 2 Duo's, and a integrated graphics of the nVidia 6600 variety. This money would be much better spent than planning on upgrading your current PC.

You can't link a photo that way, I cannot see things on your hard drive. You need to upload the photo to a sharing website such as photobucket and then link us there using the [img][/img] codes.

He already said that his socket type was s478. The real issue will be the FSB, will his current mobo support a 800mhz FSB cpu or even a 533mhz FSB cpu? If it does then he can really get a nice gain in performance. (a 533 mhz P4 @ 3.06ghz or a 800 mhz P4 @3.2ghz)

Ok, well your current CPU is using a very high voltage so don't bother overclocking that. The best CPU they make for socket 478 is a 3.4GHz Pentium 4, which costs around $170 shipped on Ebay. Not worth it at all. A 3.2GHz CPU though is around $60. I still don't think it is worth it but I guess if you are against getting a new one its the best you can do. As for the RAM, DDR RAM is very expensive now, a 512 may cost you $30 - 40 against the DDR2 RAM which costs like $20-30 for 2GB. I can't tell what your video card is with the CPUz settings.

It's not going to play Pro Street. Hell, it probably wouldn't even play Underground 2. IIRC the 1.6Ghz Willamette was king of the hill around 2001/2002, and the sort of cards that were top end then were the Radeon 8500, 9000 Pro and GeForce 3 Ti500. Since the MINIMUM requirement for Pro Street is the 9500 / FX5950 which didn't come along until several months after, even if this PC was cutting edge when it was built, the video card will still need to be upgraded, as will the CPU as it won't overclock to 2.8Ghz. Long story short getting this PC up to the required grade to play pro Street will cost a similar amount of money to building a new one that could play it with ease.

I agree with Sam. Other than the CPU, Double check that your motherboard supports HT and 800MHz FSB. What video card do you have?
BTW, this is a cheaper processor:
http://cgi.ebay.com/INTEL-PENTIUM-4-HT-C...1QQcmdZViewItem

@ Sam: The processor will play Underground 2 at minimum or so. I ran it on a 2.4 P4 with 32MB Video RAM and a Celeron D 2.93 and a XFX 5500.
To max it out I have trouble with a 9800 Pro, it takes a couple seconds or so in the beginning before it stops lagging (on the Celeron D). A 6800 GT does it fine though.

No, you need to first make sure your motherboard supports the CPU. Then when you go to the shop ask for:
"Socket 478 Pentium 4 - 3.2 Giga-hertz with Hyper Threading"
or:
"Socket 478 Pentium 4 - 3.4 Giga-hertz with Hyper Threading"

Whichever you feel is the best price/performance ratio at the shop.

They also make 3GHz, 2.8GHz, 2.6GHz and so on (down by .2) so whatever is the best you can ask for.

I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH, CHECK MOTHERBOARD/CPU COMPATIBILITY FIRST!

that board won't support prescott or equivalent type cpu. the max fsb is 400 so can't run 533 or 800 fsb cpu's.
