There you go, With a max FSB of 400MHz, its not worth upgrading that board. All the newer processors have a 533 or 800MHz Bus. You'll need a new motherboard if you plan on upgrading.

Again, for inexpensive upgrade in small affordable steps, 1) motherboard, 2) CPU (or OC yours) 3) GPU. Lookf for used ASUS P4P800 on !865PE Pro ($50.00 or so on eBay) w/ OC ability to DDR600, FSB 350MHz and make the best of your current parts till you get the rest. As for CPU, the best for price v/s performance is hands down the P4E 3.4GHz Prescott on 1m L2/800HT. If you're looking to OC like I think you do, this bad boi can do 4GHz easily on air and 4.2+ w/ water. It can be had from $150.00 ~ $200.00. 2nd best for OC is also a Presscott, the P4E 3.2E or 3.0E as long as it is has PRB (multi unlock) enabled so you can use the 14x multi to gain FSB of 266+. These 3 cores can run DDR533 in 1:1 for HT1066 just like most moder rigs. It has all the SEE instructions needed for today and few years to come. It is essentially the same chip insade as recent P4 6x series same as P4 650 (on LGA775) but w/ no EIST. So the CPU overclocks great.
Your CPU on the ASUS P4P800 will se a difference of night and day. You should be able to play most games, just not as compared to w/ others here hold standards to. 1.6v is average for the 1.6/1.7, but they can take 1.8 w/ good cooling, but shuoldnt need more then 1.72 to get 2.4GHz.
Try to get highest spd RAM before your CPU as it will just hold you back on OC. Look for PC-4400 or like. If it must or can only be PC3200, get tighest possable ie: 2-2-2-5. Lots of video cards can be had for cheap, even a modern nVidia 8 series PCI will be better then old AGP 4X in general performance. But you can get an nVidai 8600 8x AGP. The GPU will be your most expensive upgrade is it usually is in any gaming build.
As I said, use this as a stepping stone. As you save, later can easily move to a DFI w/ newer LGA775 socket utilizing all your old hardware, then move to DDR2 and PCI-E x16 and SATA-II on new chipset later there on as it becomes possable.

NuckNFuts, the only reason that sleepy wants to overclock his cpu is because of a game that wants at least 2.6ghz for cpu speed.

Oh, I was under the impression of wanting to also learn to overclok.
OK, just paly it safe and get a use P4 2.8GHz/512kb/400 stepping SL7EY of s475 since the mobo will no dought allow for much of any overclocking aboe a 5% FSB increas. it actually is the last cores of its generation and uses much less vcore to under 1.475 but can still handle 1.6v to go over 3.2GHz on the right mobo.

lol, just as i said b4....how about a pin mod? I thought there was a pin that can be removed on 400mhz fsb cpus to make them run at 533mhz fsb...

Heres how it goes. You want to play NFS PS.
Your motherboard only supports a 400MHz Bus. Even if there was a pin mod, the motherboard would be unable to see the increase in bus. Your RAM is OK, it is slow but will do. Your video card is useless if you want to play games. Your slot is also outdated. AGP 8x is what you want to play games, your slot is only a 4x. To do a decent upgrade, get a socket 775 motherboard with PCI-E, socket 775 CPU and DDR2 RAM. Also if you can afford it get a PCI-E graphics card. If you cannot then look for a motherboard that has integrated graphics but any motherboard that has integrated graphics sacrifices overclocking capabilities.

Not only will it suffer from overclocking but it'll also be dump at pro Street. Dedicated PCI-e graphics are the only realistic option here.

Motherboard, chipset + BIOS, DRAM, GPU + VDRAM, then CPU, APU, & RAID set & so on. Invest here in this order and any CPU you put in is gonna do as good as it can. So get a budget OC'r and you now have the best performance to the dollar options. I'm sure many of you know what it feels like to have an expensive CPU on a cheap mobo only to be held back to a point. Afterall, the entire gaming system is only as strong as the back bone it stands on.

kinda curious here guys. what advantage do you get when you OC your GPU? im not into the gameing as alot are would it benafit me to OC my GPU? (EVGA 7600gt) also does it matter on the OC what kinda monitor you have? i still have the $5 13in crt monitor i bought from goodwill..lol

I personally wouldn't bother unless you overclock it a huge amount. If you aren't into gaming then there would be no point in overclocking at all. But if you still feel like doing it, i would suggest taking off the stock heatsink and replacing the stock thermal paste with some AS5 or replacing the stock heatsink/fan altogether. No, frame rate are not affected by the monitor you are using with your computer but it will ofcourse look crappy to your eyes.

by overclocking, you can get the same performance as a more expensive cpu (usually at a fraction of the cost). OC'ing not only helps with gaming but it also improves encoding time if you're into video encoding/transcoding.

im1992, not many people take off the thermal paste and replace it on their graphics card.
Mort, Rob was talking about GPUs. He knows all about CPUs(or how horrible it can be sometimes!).
Just trying to clear up some stuff. People also OC their graphics card to get braggin rights on 3DMark06.
