Yeah, sounds good. Don't go too cheap on the mother board though. You want to have some kind of future with your system, why make yourself buy another one in a few years? Oc'ing is a nice way to get a fast computer with less $$$. Video card's real important if you play games. As far as case fans go, I spent $95 on my case and it has 4 fans, and 2 on the psu, with a controller on the front. Also the psu is 450 watts, 20 amp on the 12+ volt (need at least 18 amps to over clock). That seems to be holding up well to the extra stress of oc'ing so I have yet to by a new psu. I'll post links to my case, mobo, and hdd so you can check them out. They worked out great for me.

Case:

Mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813131524

HDD: I paid 131, now it's 124.

Hope some of this helps. Good luck!

Alien 13,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Work has been kicking my ass for 12 hours per day, and I'm working 11 days in a row covering someones vacation.

I still am partial to ASUS. I saw a review in a magazine about the top 5 motherboards and the A8N-SLI Deluxe was number 1. The Gigabyte that you talk about is number 5. Now it still made the top 5, which is good, but I personally think that you would be better off with an ASUS board.

Everything else is on track for what I paid, or current good prices on parts in the US if you do the AU to Us conversion.

I'll look around the web and see if I can't find the ASUS board for you for around the same price...

Later,
Joe

And here's a little info on the SLI situation:
www.dansdata.com/slibox.htm

I gotta stop now, but you get the point. Ten minutes on Google. I typed in "asus a8n-sli australia" and started searching. Look for one with good shipping prices and I don't think you'll be dissapointed.

Just checked, the links don't work. Highlight them and copy/paste to the address bar in your browser...

Cool thanks for the info. Also coz i dont have a job yet(still in year 9) i was wondering if it would be stupid of me to buy somethin like the case now and when i get a job and the money for the other hardware find out its old and crappy and theres a new and better one out. Do you reccomend i wait till i get the money?

Maybe, maybe not. If you find a case you like for a good price, get it. The mobo you were looking at and the ASUS are both ATX form factor so that won't change. Actually most are these days. One part at a time is an easier way to justify spending the money.

you can be sure that whatever you buy, there will be something better in 3-6 months.(see alvin toffler's "the third wave". older book, but still relevant)
cases don't change much if you stick to popular form factors. if you hope to expand later, get what you think you'll need in the future now. (ie: i bought a lian li case 2 years ago, had 2 hd's and 2 burners. plenty of rooom, and thats all my mobo could support. just upgraded and now have connections for 4 hds(raid!) and 2 cd/dvd/front panel doodads, so on.{the lian li has 5 hd slots, 4 large front bays and 3 small (floppy) bays.) luckily, i thought ahead and ensured the case had the space.
get what you can afford now if you like, but once you start building, you'll never go back to dell lmao
good luck, and have fun :)

Praetor. This is a very welcome thread. I have been building a limited number of M/B's per year for fifteen years mostly around AMD CPU's. Have just built a Athlon 64 3000 and Gigabyte K8NS-Ultra 939 M/B and found it vefy stable. The EasyClock utility reports a CPU temp of 24 degrees C. (the external temp obviously)
I have yet to fins a reference to SATA and the issues that seem to bug it ... Looking forward to hearing about SATA 2 experiences.

chromesn's right about future ugrade ability. My case has room for 7 hard drives, 2 floppy drives (or 8 hdd and 1 floppy), and 4 optical. And ATX will probably hang around for a while. The mobo supports the fastest AMD64 available, and in 5 years that should be plenty. Otherwise the upgrade cost will definitely be cheaper than a whole new build. So for a little more now, or a little less now cause I got a 3000+, you can have a lot more later when you need it...

By the way, what is year 9?
