I am building my first pc and just wanted some thoughts on how I've done selecting the parts. I am not a gamer, so I don't need ultra high end specs, but I do a lot of daytrading on my pc, so I need something stable and fast.
Asus P4c800e deluxe mobo $171
Intel 2.8ghz 800mhz fsb 1mb L2 cache $179
Mushkin 512MB DDR PC3200 RAM - $77/stick x 2
Hitachi 160GB 7200 RPM SATA HDD $99
Gigabyte Ati Radeon 9200 128mb 128 bit video card $68
Lite-On 52-32-52 CDRW $30
MGE CAG-M1-BK case with 400w power supply $55
How did I do? Any comments on any of these components would be appreciated. Have I gone overboard somewhere where I can save money? Have I taken the cheap route somewhere where I shouldn't?

From your prices, I'm guessing you arent in Canada (or else you and I need to have a chat hehe). USD i presume? Some comments:
- You probably dont need the Deluxe model of the motherboard, the 'stock' P4P800 board (~$115USD) should be more than sufficient. http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket478/p4p800/overview.htm
- Good call the processor, no need to get the ultra expensive one -- just make sure you grab the 1MB cache version
- If you really arent into games and such, go for the Radeon9200SE which is usually just over half the price of the regular 9200
- Cant comment on the case, got a link for that?
- If you want stable, spend some money on a good powersupply :)
- As for overboard, you might have gone a tad far with the Mushkin's ... I think Corsair has a couple models which are both stable and cheaper. Not a big deal tho.

ditch the hitatchi drive...it's an IBM drive and there have been like 40% failure on those drives. Seagate all the way woo hoo!

Thanks for the tip on the Asus P4P800. I can get the deluxe version of that board for US$109..a US$60 savings over the P4C800E Deluxe. THe only real difference between the two as far as I can tell is that the P4C800 has Intel CSA gigabit LAN, while the P4P800 has 3Com non-csa gigabit LAN. Given that I have no idea what CSA is about, it is likely not crucial to me.

also the biggest difference is that the P4C800 supports the prescott with the 875 chipset

damn...i got pwnd but it is the 875 chipset as apposed to the 865 chipset

If you didnt know it the 875 isnt anything fanicer than the 865PE ... hell the 865PEs are idential in damn near every respect -- they were just "predicted" to not perform as well as those that were selected as 875s.

Other way around.... IBM drives are Hitatchi. Furthermore, the Hitatchi drives are amoung the world's best drives hands down. Seagate only wins in the SCSI category. And for the price he's paying its all the more better.

Prescott isnt anything fancy whether we look at it from a technical level or a performance level. It's an expensive chip that makes a lot of heat and doesnt perform to it's pricetag. Also, thurman1 was looking for an affordable and working system.

The Intel P4 2.8ghz i selected is Prescott. Should I be looking at the Northwood? As far as I can tell, if I want a 1mb L2cache, I need prescott. Am i wrong?

OMFG.... is that all the Prescott is???? A friggen NorthwoodC plus an extra 512K of cache???? Geez, all the hype of a 90nm process and then all the excess heat.... FFS WTF is wrong with Intel??? Somebody please tell me there's more to Prescott than just that :(

The POST reporter isnt useful unless you have a mobo problem hehe... at which point its a problem period hehe.
The RAID ... from what you posted ... do you actually intend to use the RAID... you've only got one drive listed there :) (I had a bad experience once with onboard raid hehe)
Firewire ... I guess this is the only useful differnce on the board (unless you plan to use the RAID) ... IMO not worth upgrading to the deluxe for though
