Try another DVD back system, download DVD Shrink and set it up to burn with Nero. The important thihg here is to determine if it's the software or your drive.I don't know much about the most recent versions of 321 software but perhaps you need chek for an update.

I was actually able to work around the problem. Instead of using the DVD reader for the source disk and the burner for the target, I put the source in the burner (sony 510a). With the source disk in F: (sony) xcopy correctly recognized it as a burner. I have to swap disks but since the application never does simultaneous reads and writes from E: to F: there isn't much of a difference.

This doesn't explain why xcopy can correctly recognize a dw-u14a with a -R disk loaded and not a dru-510a, but then life and microsoft are full of little suprises!

I will probably take a look at using Nero and DVD Shrink and give xcopy a rest if they pan out, at least until microsoft publishes their promised fix.

Again thanks for all your help.

I have the sony DW-U14A and have always had a bit of trouble using DVD Shrink and the latest version of Nero. If it gives you any more trouble you may just want to consider changing software.
The DVD Shrink and Nero combo only worked for about 10 burns and then just stopped working all together for me. I think it has to do with a buggy latest version of Nero. Now with DVD Decryptor and DVDClone I have 100% success with over 40 DVDs.
Has anyone else had the same problems?

The Sony DRU510a firmware is now updated to 1.1 I believe, but Id stick with 1.0f for now. Im still using the orginal DWU14A 1.0d firmware after trying to update it to DRU510a's firmware Nero refused to burn cds at any speed higher then 12x when the drive is capable of 24x.

Hi I bought the OEM version of the Sony DVD RW DW-U14A and now have DRU-510A with the latest 1.1a firmware.

Problem I find is that it now keeps coming back with an error code when I write a DVD via Ulead MovieFactory3 and when I go to Nero it tells me that Im only able to write at 2.4x

Is that correct?

Thanks - Tony

Hi all,
How do I do a firmware backup of my drive so I don't mess it up? Is there a utility to do it?

Nothing special just read the instructions. This is an old thread but the information and links may still be relevant.

Have you considered that your problem may be caused by bad media? I've read numerous reports about Datawrite media failing. Go here and pick up a spndle of these and give them a try. You can't go wrong with the price or the quality. I've burned 80 of them without a single coaster.

I read through this thread because I have the Sony DW-U14A, and I'm trying to upgrade the firmware in order to be able to read and write dual-layered DVD's. I followed one of the links that someone posted on here to upgrade to version 1.0d, but when the program came up it said I was already at 1.0d. On the same site it now has 2.0d, and I was wondering if that upgrade would allow me to write/read dual layered discs. I would rather do that than flash my drive to the DRU-510A. Thanks in advance for any advice on this.

There is no firmware upgrade to make that drive write dual layer discs.

daveIIB, the Sony DRU510A and its OEM version the DWU14 arent duallayer capable Burners.. No upgrading of the firmware is going be able to make either of these burners burn duallayer.. the best a firmware upgrade/swap is going do is increase the drives speeds and compatiblity.

btw, for a duallayer burner, Id suggest checking out Newegg.com.. I saw a few DL burners for around $90 to $100 or so US.. fair warning, so far DL DVD media is avaible in +R / +RW format , which isnt fully supported by all standalone DVD players, DVDROMS.. Id hold out till Duallayer DVD-R becomes an vaible option

Can any one tell me where to get the 1.0f firmware for DRU510a ?
From what I have read this seems to be the most reliable.

The link on rpc1.org takes you to the sony site and its not on there any more

cheers
