All,

There seems to be a wealth of information on this website, so hopefully one of you can help me. After reading this site for many hours I tried many offered solutions, but none of them are working for me.

Problem: I am backing up my DVD home movies with a combination of DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and Nero. All of my movies burn successfully and they all work without a flaw in my home DVD player (and others' home DVD players too). However, they will not work on either of my two laptops or my desktop computer.

What I've tried: Two burning methods that are proven to work. DVD Shrink/Nero and DVD Shrink/DVD Decrypter (both work great). Several DVD reading software applications including WinMedia, WinDVD, DVDXPlayer and more. I even used ForceASPI to reset my ASPI layer. Nothing seems to be working.

Any insights? Thanks in advance!

After your burn...what happens when you put this DVD back into the burning drive? Do you get any error message? And, if your burned DVD doesn't launch the player automatically (e.g., WinDVD), what happens when you tell the player where to find the files you want to play? Does it recognize the DVD in the drive, or the DVD files you ripped on the HDD?

The burning drive (an external drive) will also play the DVD, but the DVD drives installed directly into the laptops/desktop will not.

The laptops/desktop can play the ripped ISO files straight off the HD, just not the burned media.

When I first put the burned DVD into the laptop/desktop DVD drive and attepmt to look at its content the computer (file explorer) freezes. If I open WinMedia, WinDVD, or DVD X Player and open the DVD media from there the DVD software freezes.

Weird huh?

Thanks!

I'm presuming that the source DVD plays OK in the internal desktop and laptop drives?

I'm thinking that it is either a driver or media problem...rather than anything related to the burn. The d/l above should have the most recent drivers, and if there is still a problem, I would try different media. I stopped using lower grade stuff because of problems similar to this.

Cliprex freezes as well (not responding). Then, after several minutes it probably times out and it throws an error message stating "No valid DVD Disc found in your D:\ drive."

It seems that the two laptops and desktop DVD drives do not recognized the burned DVD as a DVD or anything at all. I cannot even open up the burned DVD with file manager to view its contents unless it is in the burner.

Yes, the source DVD plays correctly in all drives. I understand the point about the media. What concerns me is the inconsistency of the play. Why will the burning drive and the home standalone player work, yet the internal laptop and desktop drives do not?

Thanks!

Bugger,

Stupid questions ... your internal drives are dvd-roms right? and not cd-roms?

Yes. This is beginning to sound like PC support call ;) I am an experienced user, in fact it is my profession. But I am open to any questions that might help. Thanks for asking. :)

What format are you using? +R's?

I should also mention that I did use a few different types of media. DVD-R (FujiFilm and Memorex). Both work in the standalone players and in the burning DVD drive.....but not in the laptops/desktop.

A friend burned me a DVD+R that works in my laptops and my desktop. Is it possible that these drives can only read DVD+R media, and my standalone home player can only read DVD-R media? If so, that bites!

Thanks!

I would think the opposite. Some older players don't like the newer +R format.

Does the same disc work on your stand alone players?

I just noticed something. I have a DVD that a friend burned me that works in my home standalone player and my computers. However, it is completely unmarked so I do not know if it is a DVD-R or a DVD+R. Is there a way for me to find this out?

It is looking like this is definiely a media issue now. Can either of you recommend a good/cheap media and a place to buy it?

Thanks so much for all your help.

Thanks!

First figure out what format. Then check out Ritek G04 discs here http://www.meritline.com

It looks like DVD+Rs work in more of my devices, so I'll start buying those. I was always told the DVD-Rs were more widely accepted.

Thanks for your help guys!

The +R may be just part of it. I'd like to suggest you check out what AD users have to say about certain media. For example, while Memorex enjoys a well-recognized name, I for one have had problems with their +R, and +RW in a burner with the Memorex name on it!!! I haven't had problems with Ritek G04, and that brand is spoken well of hear in the AD forum.

I think Memorex sucks!!! Alot of other have said the same thing. I have had good luck with Verbatim branded 2.4X +R's and TDK 4x +R's. Have only used -R once (sample disc) so I can't speak of them. Oh, Sony brand suck also :)

Actually flip...my quote was this:

...which is a little nicer way of saying Memorex sucks!!! I certainly won't buy the brand any more.

Thanks guys!

I'm going shopping for some DVD+Rs. It looks like I'll stick to TDK 4x +R's. Are there any other DVD+R 4x media you can recommend? This metitline website looks great!

Thanks!

bugger,

I don't want you to confuse you about TDK, but they do use different manufactures. I've just had good luck with them :). When those run out I'm going to try ritek's

Well...for sure...I think you get the idea to stay away from Memorex.

Opinions vary, and that is why I suggested you make a quick vist to the forum on media.

I have read many good things about Ritek here. I just bought the 4x DVD+Rs. I get them in a couple days. I'll let you know how they work. They come with a 60 day guarantee, which is comforting.

Now, I get to return all the DVD-Rs I just bought!!! Thanks again for your help!

Thanks!

bugger...

I think you will be quite happy with that particular Ritex. That is what I use in my Sony 530A...and I have yet to find an internal or stand-alone player they wouldn't play in.

For what it is worth, I also keep some of the Ritek +RW's around for trial burns when trying new software combinations or different compression ratios. They also seem to have the same compatibilty as the +R's.

Same thing just started happening to me. My usual method DVDShrink -> Nero 6 (latest versions)using Memorex DVD-R produced results that would play in any of 4 DVD drives and the Sony standalone.
Now the burned DVD only plays in the standalone and the actual DVD Burner drive.

I think you'll find that your experience with Memorex isn't unusual. The other thing is that all [software] players aren't created equal. PowerDVD will read almost anything...even burns that won't play on a standalone. A little known but highly recommended freeware player is called Mark's DVD Tray Player. It will give you a good read on whether you've burned a good disc. The link I have is dead, so you'll need to do a search if you are interested.

Actually just found the problem, and the solution in another forum. http://forum.cdfreaks.com/lite/t-97476.html
Most recent version(s)of Nero 6.3.1.15 is the problem.
That is the one thing I changed in my software since my last batch of DVD burns. BTW virtually all my burns are with Memorex, CDR for years and DVD since I got the Sony burner a few months ago. Installed my previous version Nero 6.3.1.10 and all is well again.
Tough finding that version to d/l though.
Find it at www.filemirrors.com.
