I have been using dvdx platinum for some time with great success on my hp 2.4 g laptop. Recently I've encountered a big problem with dvds only partially copying. Found an encryped file using dvdx rescue. Tried using dvd shrink and dvd decripter and getting the same problem. Is there something new copy protection being put into dvd's that the copy software doesn't remove now? The last error i got with dvd shrink said I/O error - then the deice, plus (scsi status 0x02 - Interpretation: invalid address for write.

I doubt it. What version of Platinum are you using? And what movie is it?

I couldn't find the version on the software anywhere, but it is pretty recent -last spring. The movies are in the cut, among others. i have wasted about nine blank disks in the last week.

I did recently get my computer back from service and they installed a new dvd burner. could this be a hardware problem? Before the new drive was installed i rarely had a bad burn.

you could try using anydvd its a program that gets rid off any encryption once you put a dvd in your computer , i think there is a 30 day trial at this site under software and iff it works for you as it works for me you could buy it.
happy burning :o)

To find out the version of Platinum, Open platinum -> then press ctrl+alt+del ... it should show in task manager.

Also Decrypter shouldn't have any problem with encryption. Are you using the originals? I was able to do In The Cut w/ Shrink.

Check your ide settings, make sure they are set to DMA. You can also try installing a "working" aspi layer.

There are a few DVD's that are hard to rip by any means and the consensus is that the DVDs are flawed as result of bad manufacturing. I've tried again and again to rip the Road to Perdition. It stopped every ripper I tried to rip it with at 60%. I borrowed a copy from a friend thinking my DVD was damaged and it too stopped at 62%. I did a web search and sure enough there were others who also got stopped at 62%. My thoughts are that the flaw occurs when the laser tries to read the second layer of the disk and fails.

I understand, i just seem not to be able to copy anything for the last week, I have a stack of bad burns around 13 in a row. That can't be just a coincidence of bad disks in a row, right? Plus the wierd experience of anydvd not starting and DVD Shrink not reading sometimes. It just seems like there is a gremlin in the works. Can i connect my laptop to my desk top and get the desktop to recognize the laptop hd to try a burn with the desktop software?

DVD Shrink doesn't need AnyDVD it does it all on its own. If you're getting repeat misburns then you are eithe stuck with some bad media, your hard disk needs defragged, or your burn needs help. Do the defrag and check the media you're using.

newfie (canadian?)

You're welcome and enjoy and if you're doing a lot of backups then defragg every 4 to 7 days.

The Defrag probably did the trick I can't tell you how many times that was the solution to problems.

Also you could make sure your Temp folder is cleaned out before Rip/Burn process. If you also run something like Ad-aware 6 to get rid of spyware etc.

Hi again,
Well after one successful burn, I've had about five bad burns in a row again. Cleaned out temp files, defragged the hd, use only shinny new originals and still getting half the disk burning.

You said something about checking the burn. What would that involve?

Also haven't had any luck getting decrypter to burn anything after reading with shrink.

Any other suggestions? I'm getting desperate. Is there any reason to think a different (purchased) dvd ripper would work any better than xcopy or shrink/decripter?

this is a long shot but do you have windows xp with a ntfs file system.
iff not and you have a fat 32 file system , then you will have a problem burning with decrypter.

also could you let us know what media you use.

In the windows folder there is a file that is called system 32 is that what you mean?

I am using Memorex 4X dvd+R disks and have been for a long time with very little trouble.

newfie, to check ... Open "my computer" -> right click your local disk and select properties.

Did they put in a different burner or the same one? Is it an internal or external burner?

If you still want to use Platinum, use a newer version.

Just a reminder, DVD Decrypter will only burn ISO's. So when you click "backup!" in Shrink, you need to change the target device to "ISO Image File", then check the box to Launch DVD Decrypter.

Seems like your problem isn't ripping, it's with burning.

Hi folks,
To limit your reading time I'll list current attempts/failures/successes with burning:

-downloaded dvx copy platinum 4.0.3.8, it reads fine but on write after about 30 seconds i get "finalizing" in the write window and computer lockup. (this happens every time). It burns about a half inch of the disk.

-tried wwriting movie from hd w/ decripter (copied by shrink) get error message: invalid address for write. Also on another occasion got error message w/ decripter: "device Io control (FSCTL_Lock_volume)Failed. Unable to lock volume for exclusive access. Reason: access denied."

I defrag my hd after every 4-5 burns now just in case.

Other info you asked for:
my file system is NTFS
had installed new internal dvd burner - HL-DT-ST DVD-+RW GCA-40 40N.
This drive burns cd's just fine.
I run adware after every internet connection.

Could this problem have anything to do with Symantic Personal Firewall even though i have it disabled?

One other thing that has happened intermittently in the past and is happening all the time now (may be unrelated to the dvd stuff but thought I'de mention it) is a error i get when attempting to put the machine in standby mode - get error 'patin couffin engine' device preventing standby.

Thanks for your help, i guess this is a tough one.

I did recently get my computer back from service and they installed a new dvd burner. could this be a hardware problem? Before the new drive was installed i rarely had a bad burn.

Problem/Solution: When your new DVD Burner was installed Windows probably changed your IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers Primary IDE Channel and or Secondary IDE Channel to PIO (your burner is probably on the Secondary IDE Channel and is Device 0 or 1). Go into Device Manager and then Advanced Settings, check both your Primary and Secondary IDE Channels Current Transfer Mode. One or more has probleably been changed to PIO. Which will cause the problems you are experiencing. I use DVDXcopy Platinum (Simple and Advanced mode) all of the time. After maybe 20 burns or so, I noticed that all of a sudden I was experiencing similar problems to yours (I had installed some new software that had caused Windows to change the Transfer Mode). The final and most important fix was getting the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels set back to DMA. I accomplished this by installing the latest firmware (reflashing) for each of my drives, a Sony CDRW/DVD-ROM drive (read drive) and a TDK 8X DVD+-RW drive (burn drive). Well after over a 100 more burns I can say without a doubt my problems are solved. I have acheived reading and writing total times of under 20 minutes with a slow upgraded pentium III, running XP Pro, 256M ram! In addition, this is acheived without disabling Norton Anti-virus, or Norton Personal Firewall. There are alot of people on these forums that bash DVDXcopy. However, once you solve some basic problems. There is no other program that is as simple or as good in terms of the end result, that being a great quality backed up movie! One click, and I walk away and 20 minutes later, ahhhhhhhhhh the simplicity of it all. The only time it takes longer is when the quality of the original is not good, or it is a longer movie which results in the read taking longer.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked the transfer mode, currently DMA (after i reinstalled windows). I had been getting an error when putting pc into standby, so tried reinstalling windows to see if that helped with the burning issue. The patin couffin engine was blocking standby. I noticed when reinstalling dvd xcopy that this is a component of xcopy. Anyway that problem disappeared, (standby issue), but after reinstalling xcopy, re-activating product and checking transfer mode in device manager, the burn still fails the same way - start burn and it immediately says 'finalizing'.

newfie, let's take this one step at a time. I wish you had not re-installed windows. It may take a little longer to solve your problem now. The solution to your problem is probably one of two things; Either a re-flash of your read and or burn drive(s). Or removing or disableing software to clear a software polling issue. The first solution would remove what is probably a generic driver windows loaded during the re-installation. The latter solution would stop a resource conflict between two pieces of software. One is DVDXcopy and the other is some program that is polling the read and or burn drive. On 321Studio's website they state that their software will yield to any other software that tries to talk to the drive(s)! Therefore we/you have to figure out what that software is and remove it or disable it. There is a blacklist which contains a known list of software that will conflict with any 321Studio programs! Believe me when I say, I have seen and resolved many issues with DVDXcopy, everything from Encrypted data errors, DVDXcopy crashing after starting the read, partial burns, slow reading, slow burns, etc... However, in every case the cause and solution was simple to ascertain. Once I understood the basics, and knew what to look for! Now with well over 100 burns later, and after resolving some basic issues, perfection. Almost, the other day, I installed a windows update. And aha, burn issues again. Windows will on the fly change your Secondary IDE Controller settings to PIO (programmable input output), without notifying you! Which is very bad for burners, slows them down, can cause all kinds of error condtions, bad burns, program crashes etc.. Note: Once we resolve your issues, you should never, and I repeat never get a bad burn! After well over 130 burns, not one bad burn! Perfection every time, the result is always as good as the original! I need some information to help you out, first what are the model numbers for your read and or your burner drive(s). This is needed to determine what the latest firmware is for your drives. If you need help reflashing your drive or drives. No problem, I have done this a few times for sure. It should only take 5 minutes or less to reflash two drives. If that is your configuration.
