Let me also add that the OS does in fact recognize a blank DVD as a CD since the OS, for the most part, lacks built-in support for DVDs. That's why we use 3rd party apps for burning DVDs. The apps can and do recognize blank DVDs for what they are.

Hey thanks dude, imgburn could burn, which means Nero was the issue. Damn that program. Apparently I reinstall and use those clean up tools. But it still seems to be corrupted...any idea?

It doesn't seem to take much to throw Nero off track. Perhaps there's another installed driver causing a conflict or Nero just doesn't like your burner for whatever reason. You were using some really poor quality media in the Prodisc and CMC Mag as well. I seldom use Nero for burning myself. I prefer ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter. They just seem to do the job without fuss or muss.
Be sure to run the Driver/Registry Clean Tool along with the Nero 7 Clean Tool before you reinstall Nero. There's also a newer version, 7.9.6.0 available here:

It never hurts to clean up your hard drive and to also keep it defragmented. I doubt that's the cause of your problems, however.
Have you recently changed your -R media? Do you have the latest firmware for it? What burning programs are you using? Are you using good quality media like Verbatim? Have you tried using Device Manager to uninstall your burner, allowing the OS to auto reinstall upon restart?

I have the same issue with not recognizing empty DVD disks but CD Rs are OK. Days ago everything was fine.
It has been happening before, 4 times to be exact and only solution was reinstalling windows.
The closest I could track it was happening after windows update. Uninstalling media player update fixed the problem before this time, but not now.
I have two burning options, none work. { Nero,Sonic }
System restore is not fixing it, uninstalling and reinstalling the drive in device manager either.
Any help is appreciated.

Do all programs not recognize the blank disks? ImgBurn, Nero, etc.?
The OS will see blank DVDs as CDs but the programs themselves shouldn't.
Have you tried different brands of disks?
Sometimes different programs install conflicting drivers. Try ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter (both free) and see if they recognize your blanks.

Is your burner firmware up to date?
Who is the manufacturer of your blank disks?

Nero, Sonic, Imageburn, etc.
It will show as empty DVD but when I try to burn it shows: " Please insert an empty disk" or " This is not an empty disk" etc.
I am suspecting Microsoft's DRM has something to do with it! Other people I know had the same issue. Before uninstalling New W media player worked but not anymore.

Are you using Vista or XP? I have both Vista and XP and haven't encountered any of these problems to date. The two most likely causes in my humble opinion are (1) a corrupted OS/driver conflict or (2) hardware problems.
Have you tried backing up your data, reformatting your HDD, and reinstalling the OS, taking care to not reinstall every program previously installed, but only a select few?
Have you tried installing your burner in another system to make sure it isn't a hardware problem? It's not unusual for a bad burner to burn CDs, yet not burn DVDs.

Every time I do fresh install I fix MBR, remove partition, create partition and full format. It usually burns for few months but days after windows update I notice this to happen. If it helps, it also happened once on my desktop and only reformatting worked [about 6-8 months ago]. Also I do use DVD decripter to backup my worn DVDs.

I'm guessing there's some software installed on your system that's not playing nice with others. Do you have more than one burning program installed? The usual suspects are Nero, Roxio, and Sonic. If so, try to stick with just one. Sometimes the Roxio driver can interfere and cause burning problems. There is a Roxio Zapper that removes the driver if you have it installed:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/EE6000061
You mentioned this has also occurred on a desktop system. Was it with the same burner or a different one?

I have uninstalled Sonic, Nero would not burn, then uninstalled Nero. So I obtained Alcohol 120 and it has the same result even if there is no other burning software.
I tried different media: Memorex, Verbatim and two others kinds.
No luck.

Are you using both +R and -R disks? People seem to have more trouble with -R than +R. When I've had bad burners, it's usually been the -R that fails first for gosh knows what reason.
If I were in your place, I'd back up my data, reformat the HDD, reinstall the OS and updates, and reinstall only the bare minimum of programs. Then see what happens. If that doesn't solve the problem, I'd guess it's your burner that's bad. I think you have a laptop, correct? Do you have access to an external burner to try to see if that would work? If it works, you have a hardware problem either on the motherboard or a bad burner. If the external doesn't work either, it's likely a software conflict somewhere and the reformat/reinstallation should solve the problem.

The Sonic program is just like Roxio; They don't play nice with Nero. I have had to remove these on family members PC's- then all is well. Also on a DVDRW the dvd part usually goes out before the cd part of the laser goes out. . Your problem might be two fold. Happy Burning!!!!!

So I've had this problem aswell, go to computer management in the control panel, (in administrative tools). Device management. DVD/CD-Rom drives. disable one of the devices, insert blank dvd, it will now be recognised, enable the device you disabled. Everynow and then your poor computer will get a bit confused and stop recognising blank dvds. Repete above steps and it's good to go for, Mine has had this problem 3 times in the last year.
more coffee needed to sort out this problem

Hello.
You'll have to be a bit more specific in what you mean by "my laptop wont recognize any blank dvd+r dvds anymore". Do you mean the applications you are using to burn said DVDs do not recognize there is a disk in the drive ready to be burned or simply try burning and you get a bad result?
What is the make, model, and firmware version of your burner?
Who manufactures the +R DVDs you're using?
Can you burn -R disks?
Can you burn CDs?
Have you tried using Device Manager to uninstall your DVD burner and then restarting and allowing the OS to auto reinstall the burner?
There are lots of helpful hints upthread. Have you read the entire thread?

thank god I found this thread.
here goes....
Im having the same problem as everyone else, blank DVD-R's arent recognized in any programs....
I had Nero 7, alcohol120 and DVD decrypter... I could care less about the first 2 since I only use DVD decrypter
I went to add/remove programs and got rid of nero7... still the problem
I tried uninstalling my dvd drive... and had it reinstall automatically on reboot, but stil the same problem
I bought spindle of ridata, and it wont be recognized. I bought a spindle of Verbatim, and it wont be recognized.
I think maybe Nero is the problem like most people say. Maybe something in the registry or something? im not sure how to completely get rid of what Nero did to my computer.. can someone let me know how... or what else I can try?
I also tried the disabling and enabling of my dvd drive... didnt work
I also have the latest firmware for my dvd drive "HP DVD420n"
dont know what else to try right now, but its really frustrating... plus i have 100 blank DVD's I just bought lol
but both are good quality.. ridata and verbatim
by the way, ive been using ridata ever since I started burning years and years ago... dont know why there is a problem suddenly

To completely remove Nero (altho I doubt that's causing the problem), run the Nero Clean Tool for the version you have, Nero 6 or Nero 7 or the General Clean Tool. Also run the Driver Clean Tool.
http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/Clean_Tools.html
Go back to an earlier restore point and see if your burner works.
If you have a desktop, take your burner out and install in another system and see if it works. If it doesn't, your burner is probably bad.
Can you burn +R media? CDs?
Backup your data, reformat your HDD, and reinstall your apps, reinstalling only those you really need for burning.

hey all, I found this thread whilst tryin to remedy myself of the same problem everyone else seems to be graced with. I've read most of the posts up to this point, and have tried a few of the solutions; upgrading firmware, a re-install of nero, and also replacing my atapi.sys that some other thread said may have been to blame. So far, my dvd's remain blank. The burner I have is a Philips spd2413bd, and the GP03 firmware. Been a great burner for the entire 2 1/2 months I've had full use of it, but now it's become a candidate for transmogrification to become a cigarette lighter, but I'd like to save myself from dropping another 30$ for a new one only to find I could have bought out the bic display rack at the gas station instead. Ok, so my most recent attempt at a solution was to replace the 40 pin ide cable I had with an 80, and while it gave me dma mode 4 instead of 2, it didn't solve the problem.
But what I've been reading from this forum has givin me at least a bit of hope for it (anybody know if SystemFileCheck has helped this out at all?), but I gotta crash for a lil bit. I'll probably be back tomorrow with a somethin more usefull for you guys to mull over, perhaps some version numbers, or maybe even an error log??!? Alrighty, I started sleepin about 10 mins ago. Later all.

Hi peeps. My dvd drive (HP Lightscribe) has been acting up lately. I just started having these problems. I was using Memorex dvd + R media, and my drive wouldn't recognize that a disc was inserted. But after a reboot, or after turning the pc on for the day it would recognize dvd's. Then I would try to burn a movie using anydvd and dvd fab express, but it would either write the dvd or fail and then after that it wouldnt recognize a blank dvd.So i did a full reinstall of windows and tried a different brand of dvd (Maxell Dvd + R) and the same problem happens. For some reason after every dvd i attempt to burn i have to restart the computer to get it to recognize blank dvd's, and some dvd's actually finish burning while others fail. I need help....please.

Is your burner firmware up to date? If not, update to the most recent version. Go to hp.com and look for updated firmware under support.
Otherwise there's lots of troubleshooting hints in this megathread. If you have access to another system, install your burner in that system and see if it works. If it doesn't and you have up to date firmware, your burner may be bad. If it works, you know the problem is specific to your system and you can go from there.
Let us know the results of your testing and we can give you more help.
