I tried a firmware up date, i followed all the instructions , but it said my model was mismatched. I have a feeling the drive is dead, but hopefully not. I'll keep trying to figure it out. *Edit* I finally got my drive to recognize a blank dvd, so i started burning a movie. Now it is stuck in the finalization process. It is at the very end of finalization and keeps going back a few percent over and over.

HP makes burners that are included in other systems. They vary by only a single ending letter usually. If you burner came with a nonHP system, check the computer vendor support site for a firmware upgrade.

This HP drive was bought after I got my pc, on the burner box it says it's and HP DVD 840ri. I looked on HP's site and there were only 2 firmware downloads for an 840 burner, neither one worked. I'll have to wait until i can try my friends external burner to see if it's a software or hardware problem. Thanks for all the help.

I haven't ever heard of an HP 840ri burner. Doesn' mean it doesn't exist. Are you positive that's correct? Could it just be an 840i?

Anyway, keep us informed.

Hey, having a problem with my dvd drive. Its a little unusual and i can't work it out. :

Its an DELL Optiplex SX280,
DVD drive is TEAC DVD-ROM DV-28E-C
also have Yi1372x SCA233a SCSI CdRom device ... (when i go to device manager and check CD/DVd rom devices)

So, it seems to be be able to read CD's / DVD's that have already DATA/Movies/Music on them ... but unable to recognise and therefore burn/identify any BLANK DVD/CD i place in it weather it is DVD-/+?

Is this a READ ONLY drive? Whats going on?

I have tried uninstalling driver/rebooting and Uploading the new firmware from DELL website.

Any ideas?

You can get a Lite-On, Pioneer or Samsung from Newegg.com for a little better than $30...quality burners are relatively cheap these days.

Can anyone recommend a burner to buy that is not too noisy and will fit in the place of my current drive? Or am i better off buying a USB type?

It is a slimline type currently.

Also - i am living in Ireland - so the NewEgg site as listed above is no good cos they don't ship to europe ; )

Cheers!

I'd go for an external drive if you have a laptop.

I've never seen a slimline drive in a desktop, only regular sized drives. Slimlines are usually found in laptops which is why I asked if you had a laptop. Generally slimline burners are more fragile and not as good or fast as regular desktop burners. A slimline drive is usually 1/2 inch thick. Is that what you have? If you don't have a slimline any other regular burner should work. I'd go with Samsung/Toshiba, Liteon, or Pioneer.

This is on the review, "Dell has configured the OptiPlex SX280 with its very own swap bay, identical to that found on Dell's Latitude D laptops. This modular drive bay accepts a variety of slimline optical drives, all of which are fully hot-swappable, so you can pop them in and out without missing a beat." - from this link :

... apologies for the newbie questions ; ) ... but i am looking for ANY slimline optical drive?

Chances are most slimline drives will work. I'm sure Dell sells one as well. There are 3 potential problem areas. One is whether the bezel will fit the same contour of the case as the older one if that's important to you. The bezels can sometimes be exchanged. The second is whether the drive is configured as a slave or master device. Some slimlines will be one or the other and may not be configured as the other. Others can be set either way or are software selectable. I'm used to using them in laptops so I'm not familiar with how Dell has them configured. You'll likely just need to take the new drive and put it in whatever carrier/bracket/caddy Dell is using for its system. The third is the location of the eject button if it fits through a whole in the case.

I'm not a big proponent of slimline burners. As I mentioned previously, they are not as durable as regular desktop burners, nor are they as fast. They can be fickle to say the least. I don't think I'd want to subject one to heavy use. I have an NEC 6750 in one of my laptops that works very well but I seldom use it for normal everyday burning because I know it isn't going to hold up with too much abuse.

I'm positive someone has done this before so I'd bet a web search will provide some good info.

Right, I've got a very similar problem to many people on this forum. My laptop doesn't recognise a blank dvd, I have tried various types of dvds in it too. The problem has arisen after installing 2 programmes, Daemon Tools (which I have since uninstalled) and Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8.0 which I still have. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400 and my driver is a sony cdrwdvd crx850e. It works fine with CD's and I can burn cds and it recognise already made dvds, just blank ones it doesn't which means I can't burn a dvd.
Please help as this is very frustrating,
Thanks

@ ahulme

I think that is a combo drive. It reads both CDs and DVDs, but only burns CDs. It doesn't burn DVDs and thus blank DVD media won't be recognized.

See specs here: http://www.xpcgear.com/sonycrx850e10.html

I've read through it all in the past hour. My problem is that my DVD drive cannot detect my blank DVD-Rs anymore. I've been using the same discs as before and the Media ID is TTG02 which is good media. While it worked immediately before, right now, it usually takes many many ejects before it can detect the DVD-R and burn. And I get no write errors either. I have tried Verbatim DVD-Rs but again, it doesn't detect easily.

My drive can still detect DVD+RW flawlessly though. I only use DVD+RW when I'm burning data discs with Nero. Otherwise, I always use TMPGEnc DVD Author's burning utility to burn. When it doesn't detect, it gives me a "Drive not ready" error. Here are the facts in short:

1. The model is Sony DVD RW DW-U18A and I've had it since 4/4/04.
2. I use Windows 2000 and the drive is labeled: Compact Disc (Q:)
3. TDA will give "Drive not ready" error when blank DVD-R is inserted.
4. When it is finally detected, it burns fine.
5. DVD+RWs are detected/burns fine, I don't have any DVD+Rs.
6. I have tried TDK (MediaID: TTG02) and Verbatim discs, both of which are listed as good media.
7. I don't use Nero to burn DVD-Rs so I doubt that is the problem.
8. The DVD drive is set to Region 1.

I have not tried to uninstall the DVD drive and IDE channels yet because I do not know which IDE channels to uninstall, there are 4. Here is a screencapture. Apparently, I also have a drive called a VOBID InstantDrive etc... I'm in the process of finding out what that is. Any help is appreciated!

If you have the Nero Info Tool run it and then select the Configuration tab. It'll indicate what's on each channel.

http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/Info_Tool.html

That Sony burner is actually a Liteon SOHW-832S drive. It can probably be crossflashed to use the Liteon firmware. I don't think there's been any Sony firmware updates for it.

Have you tried using +R media?

Are you using 16X speed media. I think the burner would have trouble with identifying newer 16X media given the age of the burner and the firmware.

No, I have not tried +R media when the drive is being faulty. I didn't buy any either. And I think all my DVD-Rs are 8x. But I think it burns lower than that since it takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete each burn. Here's what Nero InfoTool says. While the IDE channels are clearly layed out, my Device Manager doesn't seem to say which one is Adapter 1, 2, etc.

It appears to be on the Secondary IDE channel of the first controller. Double click on the Secondary IDE Channel in Device Manager and then select the Advanced Settings tab. If the DMA mode is Ultra DMA Mode 2, that'll be the burner. Otherwise try the other secondary channel under the second controller.

You might need to take the burner out and install in another system to see if it'll burn and recognize -R disks there; if not, it's on its way out. No big given how cheap they've become over the years.

Thanks, I've uninstalled the Secondary IDE Channel and the DVD drive and then reboot. The first blank DVD-R I inserted worked in DVD Identifier! I inserted another blank disc in and it failed to read that one but after one eject, it read it again. At least it's taking less ejects now. I will be keeping it like this for another few weeks to see what happens before buying a new one.

Do you have recommendations for DVD drive brands? Or how about ones to avoid? And how do I know it will fit in my computer, are there specific measurements I need to go by or is every drive the same?

Toshiba/Samsung, Pioneer, Liteon would be my choices right now. There are only two sizes of drives, slimlines that are 1/2 inch thick and most often used in laptops and desktop. Be sure to get another ATA burner since you don't have SATA channels. If the drive isn't labeled as SATA, it is likely a basic ATA/IDE burner which is what you need. Stay away from IO Magic and any generic burner from the office supply stores. It's not that they are necessarily bad, it's just that they use burners made by other companies and you don't know what you're getting until you unpack it.

If you're in the U.S., I'd recommend checking the deals at newegg.com.
