Badly engineered card then. Trust me, 90C is normal for a lot of modern cards (except the 4890 which runs a lot cooler).
Just tried running GTA4 with the -norestrictions tab at max res. (heh, game thinks I need 1680MB of video memory!)
Frame rate, while wildly fluctuating was relatively good. However, the game only rendered half the textures if that. My car, the road, and other cars were there, but the rest was dark blue, no sky, people, buildings, walls, anything. Suspect I can fix this by installing the patch but also hear old versions of RivaTuner can cause this, so I've updated and will test that.
Reloaded the game and found it has another safeguard, the RESC10 trap. Don't think that one will be so easy to remove.

90C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wanna say something else, but it would be inappropriate. Thats darn near BOILING point bud!!! Wow. I guess it would have been a bad card then. It did not have a fan, if that means anything. Thats why I bought the Cooler we talked about a few days ago.

1.03 Patch and I seem to have got the game working at max settings, but the lag was ridiculous. I then found out that was because my PC was trying to use 5GB of RAM and I only have 4. Closing the game reveals I'm using 2.3GB of RAM at the windows desktop. Maybe it is time to go 8GB after all... :(

hmmm...the 1.0.3.0 patch seemed to correct a Windows games live update problem I was having, or it was simply coincidence. Because after update, the problem was fine. And I have nearly no video issues. Believe me though, I wanna move forward from this card. This card is the only outdated component in my rig!!!

Here's something interesting(to me anyway). It looks(To me) like Nvidia is smoking Ati!!! Sam, you say that Nvidia has poor memory controllers. And yet Im seeing some interesting figures here. Memory Transfer rates are pretty high for the higher Nvidia line. Infact, if one were going by this guidline, then the 260 darn near keeps up with the 4870X2! Please understand, my understanding of Graphics is Grossly limited LOL!
ATI comparison
Nvidia comparison
Oh heck, here's a snap shot of the two pages. Probably easier! :)
Hmm...now I may be seeing some mistakes on this graph!!! Surely the 4870 X 2 should have the larger memory clock over the single version!
And the 295 should have a larger memory transfer rate! LOL, its core clock is identical to the 260!!! Infact most of its info is! ROFL! I think somebody screwed up.

With relative haste I'm going to dismiss all of that. Graphics specifications, clock speeds, shader cores, memory bandwidth are completely irrelevant. They are only important when comparing like cards from the same series on the same architecture
Saying the HD4870X2 is 750mhz and the GTX295 is only 576mhz is rather like saying a Core i7 920 is 2.66Ghz but a Pentium D940 is 3.2Ghz! The speed is irrelevant because of the architecture design.
Similarly, the pixel processors on the nvidias are way outnumbered, but that doesn't make them slower for it.
The HD4870X2 is indeed a slightly slower product (and doesn't overclock as far) as the HD4870 because it is a much tighter fit. Two cards in pretty much their entirity are occupying a space barely 20% larger than what is used for one. The memory chips are double-density, and some aren't heatsinked. However, the 2.6Ghz is a typo, it should be 3.6Ghz by default, they messed that up.

Well...Here she is!

I know, I know. Could have done better right. Something about this one just feels good. Others have said they've OC'd to 280 Stats, runs cool, its a Black edition! And heck, ive had a pretty good run with Nvidia. I figure i'll go one more round. Never experienced BFG before, should be interesting. If my 8600Gt, that everyone seems to sneer at, can handle GTA IV, than this new card, should handle it VERY nicely!!! And I should be fine for at least a year. Who knows, perhaps next tax return, I can go Sli/CF! Maybe even do another Mobo upgrade!

My 8800GTS is a BFG and I've been very happy with it for the past two years. It should come with a lifetime warranty and will probably OC very well. Since you decided to go with Nividia are you going to be doing some folding?

Quite a bit LOL! The game is friggin awesome to say the least. Next to Photoshop, its the best thing ive installed! Minus a few glitches, and the headaches of installation LOL! Definitely NOT for the faint of heart LOL!
@eparker - FOLDING??? Do you mean cuda?
By the way, I found an Xbox 360 CONTROLLER emulator. Here's for those interested. Its working perfectly with my Basic Logitech controller.
Im afraid I dont recall which model it is. Ive had it for over 2 years, and I no longer have the package. I imagine if M$ catches wind of this though...

The best Software I've used for Gamepads is Xpadder. Use a Gamepad even in software with no pad support at all!

Probably better than throwing .dll files in the installation folder than huh? What im using seems more like mickey mousing than fixing the problem. It does work though. Do you think this Xpadder will work with GTA IV?

Depends if there's any analogue interface. Xpadder's usually more used for the replication of keyboard and mouse controls than native gamepads, but I'm not sure.

Rubix - I didn't know you were an aussie!!
And krj, thanks for showing that method of sorting products at newegg based on reviews - I never looked closely at that before - could come in handy some day.
Nine inch nails!!!!!!! Kevin, you bought nvidia! But I guess you got one of the best cards for GTA4. (And three posts before that you said you were going 4870 - traitor, lol!)
Well, do you have it installed yet?
Yeah, with that card, when you're not terrorizing the citizens of new york, you can balance things out by using cuda and benefit mankind!
I just bought GTA4 - so I guess I'll be going through install hell. And I also have the other "kind" of GTA4 if you know what I mean. And ESA wasn't thrilled about that and told my isp all about it. So I guess I'll just stick to ebay for now, lol.
Sam, does GTA4 have a p90 - or should I send it back - there's gotta be a p90 somewhere in that game, lol. (I know what you're thinking - no I'm not gonna try it on the p4.)

LOL, yes...im somewhat a traitor. Traitor to you fine people, however not to my game, or past luck. Ive had a pretty smooth experience with Nvidia. And quite honestly, the driver issues people have been having with Ati, is worrisome to say the least. My main concern was definitely GTA! I love the game more than I love myself. LOL, ok...thats an exaggeration! Nah, I do like the game a lot though. Such a shame about the bad port though. Im sure they'll sort it out given time. I must admit, for running the Bare Bare minimum, the 8600GT fares OK. I turned the res down to 1440, and that seemed to be the sweet spot. Though during the daytime, there seemed to be a grainy kind of effect. especially with the shadows. Im sure that the new card that I get FRIDAY, will correct it. Or, a new gta patch. But I think its more hardware than anything. I think im running a faulty driver too though. But see...it corrected a rivatuner problem.

Haha, by the book nvidia fanboyism. Rule #1: Insult ATI's drivers because they don't work.
In all fairness there've been some issues recently, but overall for single cards they're fine, and indeed in Vista64, you're a lot better off with them than nvidia's drivers.
Grainy shadows is part of the GTA4 engine, they always look like that.

Really? Ehh...cant comment on that. Never ran Vista or Vista 64 for that matter. However, windows 7 64bit is running extremely well! I will probably be purchasing it on release day. Though I dont know. If linux and wine can do what im reading about...
I do find Cuda quite interesting. If what ive read is correct, a GPU could put a CPU to shame! However, my understanding is quite limited LOL! I'll be sure and run my own bench's and small OC's on friday or sunday. Friday I get it, but im going out of town for Easter. So...we'll see :)
What I was reading was, that a GPU could encode/Transcode several times quicker, given the right coding

They can and do. ATI promised hardware video decoding but never really put it to proper use. CUDA is a more advanced implementation of it. Outside folding though, it's of no use for anyone but budget card and CPU users (i.e. low end dual cores, mainly AMDs, and 9500s or less)

Haha all this talk about gta4. It's so much better on PS3. But I must admit, I just put the controller down one day, and I haven't played it since. Just didn't really find it all that great.
so I bought an atx depinning tool the other day... and I can't get it to work. I'm using it on a semi-transparent connector so I can see it pushing the pins down but it just doesn't come out :( I emailed the place I bought it off and the guy said some manufacturers mould the plugs around the pins so you can't get them out. Is this true? :(

Better? Only because you can't run it! :P
I like PC crisp graphics, even if the console ports are bad. They have to be truly dire to make me buy the console version (e.g. Splinter Cell Double Agent)
That sounds possible about the connectors, but that won't be why they do it. It'll be for more secure connections, and I welcome that. I'm tired of the terrible wiring in connectors. You can de-pin most molex connectors by plugging them in.

Hahaha, since we're still talking about GTA4, even though rubix got tired of it on his ps3 (aussies fight alligators and sharks - they don't mess with petty crime like mugging, murder, or car theft, lol) I have to ask you sam.
You say you like the crisp graphics of the pc for GTA4 - but whenever I asked before, as I recall, you were never running the game full-screen. However, lately, maybe on the hardops benches for the 4890, I have seen a lot of graphs showing GTA4 at 2560x1600 - frames maybe around 30. I know your new favorite past-time is blowing zombies to bits, haha, but when you do play GTA4, are you ever running it at 2560x1600?
