Sam, estuansis, et al.
The magic place estuansis had found is nowhere to be found in Riding Shotgun. That means it is somewhere in Under the Radar and we would be back to the problem that Sam had - trying to get past laser guns and 3 hunters in the basement - all of that. There is a point after the combine trap and the battle with 3 hunters in the basement, that you cross the river again, and that must be where you found it.
So, Sam, Estuansis agrees that my shot - taken from different angles right at the beginning of Riding Shotgun, is somewhat similar to his in quality and composition. So let's use that. Estuansis talked about a console command to remove the HUD, or UI. So I might try to go back there and shoot without the crowbar. But in any case, Sam, with or without the HUD, and crowbar, just go to that same spot, at the beginning of [edit] Riding Shotgun. Here's the screenie again:
You'll find it quite easily, it's just a narrow 1000 foot section of river - look for the little island with the rocks and the one tree. You can jump down the bank next to the mouth of the tunnel, and you'll be right there. Shrink to 800 pixels wide and we'll all have the same size screen. Thanks, Rich

Here, I took some shots with the X1800XT. I tried to get the same shots as on my 8800GTS. Tell me how they look :)
I'm still working my way through. I'll get some shots of the stream soon.

Another batch of screens. Including the river shot you wanted :)
I really don't feel like going through all that again on my other rig >.< I think these would show well enough the differences between low and high resolution. 1280 x 1024, 1600 x 1200, and 2560 x 1600.
1920 x 1200 isn't all that different from 1600 x 1200, just widescreen. But 1280 x 1024 shows nicely what to expect on a lower resolution :P
Anyway, the same shot you took is in there.

It isn't a gigantic increase in image quality, no. But it can have an impact if you are especially sensitive to jaggies. I know I am.
That's why antialiasing is so useful at any resolution. It drastically reduces jaggies even on low resolutions like 1024 x 768. 1024 res on this(correction, the 1280 monitor) monitor with 2xAA looks significantly better than 1280 res. It is actually quite pleasant to play. But 1280 res with 4xAA is even better and almost completely eliminates jaggies if not completely in most games.

hey Estuansis, you found the place. I saved your pic and your settings. Easy to find right? - just go to [edit] Riding Shotgun, and from the mouth of the tunnel hop down the river bank on your left. That's your 1800 - so later we can get a shot of your nvidia at 1920 x 1200, and then later we'll get Sam's shot. I saved your settings screen and the crowbar in the stream shot. Eventually we'll put them all next to each other for direct comparison of graphic card output. Your shot looks really nice.
Hey Sam, I found the Mile High Club. Not too bad on harden, particularly when I switched to the P90. The smg you start with has so few bullets and loads so slowly you have to do that. It took me about 5 tries. On veteran the best I did in two hours was to get to the top of the stairs a couple of times. Same as trying to get to the missile launch room - not worth trying to beat it, it gets to be really boring after a while. Again I tried to switch to P90, throw flash bangs, but only top of stairs twice in 2 hours so I'm done forever with SP on veteran. I did go back and play Death from Above - the AC-130 Spectre gunship - that is so trippy every time you play it, and the planes were definitely circling around so I believe it really is authentic. That I could play 10 times in a row and never get tired of it!!

Here's the kind of side by side I have in mind, guys. That's why if you get a chance to pop your EP2 on, in your nvidia rig, estuansis, just for that one river shot, then we'll have 3, then add Sam's later, that will give us 4 good comparisons. [Edit] Riding Shotgun, very beginning, in the river, picture of little island from tunnel end of river.
Here's my shot x850xtpe at 1600x1200 not all maxed, medium textures
and here's estuansis X1800XT at 1280x1024, very high textures
Sam has the best eye for detail - what do you think Sam, any difference?
Here are my settings:
and here are estuansis' settings:

Sam, everything you see that's pretty?! Wow, we're going to have some awesome screens here soon. Well just please make sure you also take THIS ONE PARTICULAR SCREEN so we can have an exact comparison. I notice that where Estuansis was standing, he caught the gap between the back hills, a little different from mine. He moved more to the right - his might be a better composition. If you like his better, shoot that one Sam and next week I'll reshoot mine.
I can't believe estuansis shot Alyx with the Hunter spear right through her back. Ouch!! That is a painful shot to look at. Estuansis, is nothing sacred to you!!!!!!!! LOL
I know, you try to make up for that blasphemy by showing her getting healed, but still . . . :)
I woke up last night thinking that Mile High Club, on veteran, is a shotgun map.
Several times I picked up the shotgun, and I was able to do some serious damage in the second cabin without even a flash bang. You can start the map running at full speed right past the guy coming out of the locker - duck left into the conference room - take out the shotgun guy, and then maybe you can immediately pick it up - or maybe exchange it for the pistol. He leaves it laying there halfway in the conference room. While you're reloading you can flash bang the cabin, then 6 shotgun blasts for six guys. (Then the shotgun takes about 4 or 5 painfully slow seconds to reload.) Then, 2nd cabin, 6 more blasts, and then Q quick change to the smg for the two more guys who come down the stairs. Reload the shotgun as you're walking upstairs and only 2-3 guys per cabin after that, as I recall.
Just a thought. I've never been a shotgun guy. But that might be how the aces who can do that map on veteran handle it. What do you think Sam? Hey Shaff, keep that in mind for when you go back in veteran. I might give it one more go next week, another two-hour shot. If so, I'll post what happens :D

OMG Shaff, you're one of those guys who comes around the corner and blows my friggin head off with your shotgun? I hate you guys! LOL Well, I do better when I'm 20 yards away, dancing around you with my P90 spraying like insane, and you're pumping and pumping trying to get me in your sights! :D
In that case, shaff, being a shotty guy, I think the last mission is made for you. See how the shotgun does on Harden for you. For me I love P90 like I said, but I have the strong feeling this is a shotgun map! If you get through that on veteran, we are all going to be very amazed and awestruck - am I right m8s?

Shaff, how can you be on veteran, I thought that didn't unlock until after harden - am I just dense???
Oh no, not you too Sam, another shotgun dude. I hate you guys (oh I said that already.)
Yeah, shaff, a p90 - I know, I see the comments all the time - "another p90 nubie." Well, my favorite used to be the mk4 silenced, but now it's the p90 silenced. If the map is a little more long-range, the mk4 works a little better because the iron sights are easier to target through than the p90 iron sights. But for ability to take a guy out while I'm circling - the 90 just throws out more bullets! I've had guys not fall, and then out of disgust I've had to switch back to the 90. Or maybe I was just having an off-day. But the mark 4 silenced is pretty sweet all in all - my second favorite.
The shotgun - NEVER. HATE IT! It's not a dancer's weapon. You have to point it straight the first time - and if the guy I'm dueling with is dancing, damn!! TRIED IT, HATE IT, HATE YOU GUYS!! lol

"I was drinking that!" You're pretty clumsly with the GG, eh mate? Funny! There are all kinds of little conversation they've stuck in there that you don't unlock unless at the right moment, like when I slammed right into the boulder the other day and she half-chuckled and said "GOR...DON!" I never heard that out of her before. "Ok fine, YOU wanna drive?"
You just have to hand it to Valve, they make a complete game. "Priceless" is right! Haha!

Yeah sometimes I like the RPG. I'm trying the third one these days because I like the sound it makes, not the Saw, that other light machine gun. I got a red dot for it, I think. Hey Shaff, Mr. RPG, is the gun stock, which replaces perk #1, worth it? Does it really steady the thing and make it more accurate?
