Is it just me or is there more to this than we're seeing? Not unbanning his old account, and now banning this one?

Sorta on TOPIC... I think that I have a "bad" 16x slot in my Striker... would that cause a "CMOS ERR" on the LCD post on the back of the mobo?? Haven't been able to find that out definitively anywhere.. ;)

I didn't actually, fair enough!
I have a faulty PCIe slot on my last Asus board, and it causes all sorts of POST errors, not being able to plug in more than one S-ATA cable, not being able to not have a S-ATA cable plugged in one of the ports, and so on and so on.

Well that about determines that then.... I'll put it back together tonight and see what actually happens.. If it "messes" up again.. it's going back to ASUS and they can fix it or replace it.. their choice. :)

The GTX 280 is no doubt a good card. It's extremely fast and easily a match for the HD4870. The only problem is that the 4870 actually turns out to be faster in a majority of tests. That and the low price make it the current winner for this generation.
The only way the GTX 260/280 will ever be able to compete is if Nvidia lowered their prices drastically. But that doesn't seem to be happening any time soon. It might turn out like the 8800GTX and stay the original price until it is replaced by something better(ie, 8800GTS G92).
I know my system is fast enough for me. The 4870 is solely for super high-res gameplay and pure performance, IMO. My only additional benefits would be seen in Crysis performance and the ability to use more eye candy in games I can already max.
EDIT: On a side note, I am also thinking about the 1GB 4870 if it shows any improvements at all.

The 8800GTX was unrivalled though. I've not seen tests to indicate the 4870 beating the 280, but it certainly comes close. The 4850 beats the 260 often though, which is an amazing achievement considering the comparative price.

Either way, the 4870 still unrealistic for me at the $300 is retails for now. My 8800GTS is still close enough not to consider it a major upgrade, IMO.

the 8800GTX for 2 years was a the top, that was unheard of since the 9800pro.
it beat the 7950GX2 by about 25-30% on benchies (with crap drivers) and was amazing, and probably worth its high price tag when it came out.
btuthe GTX280 is exactly on par with the 9800GX2 unless you go to 4xAA 16xAF at 2560x1600 and games which dont support SLI (which are far and few nowadays)
lol sam, how did you know HAHA
the 4870 is amazing for the price (£175) and gets about 80-90% for the performance of the GTX280 on avg, so IMO untill the GTX280 hits £230, i'd still get the 4870, esp with the chance to Xfire, as most people have a p35/45/x38/48 boards.

Crossfire is a far future thing for me. Maybe if(when) I ever go quad I'll get something with Xfire like a GA-X48-DQ6, it's my dream motherboard :D
At which point I should be able to afford the hefty pricetag. Oh well, only speculation for now. I'm very happy with my (semi-budget)P35 board for the time being.

GM he doesn't need to upgrade. I need to vent my frustration.
WHY ARE PEOPLE UPGRADING THEIR PERFECTLY GOOD P35 MOTHERBOARDS? THERE IS NO NEED TO SWITCH TO P45 or X48 ATM, unless you want crossfire).

for e-peen (unless im gonna get banned for that comment)
and its what us upgraders do. we spend on stuff not needed. i wont notice the difference to the eye between a Qcore at 2.4 and Qcoer at 3, but i'd still OC.
IMO i want to squeeze my E2140 to 3.2 (but will i notice the differnce between 3.1 and 3.2?) NO, but id like te 100% Oc. But if this board has more Voltage selections i bet i could get it stable at 400

Dude, do you have any idea of how much I used to upgrade? But even I wouldn't ditch a great board like the DS3 at this point in time.

If you have to put some "fearful" comments in parenthesis then you might not need to say it!! :P
Boozer,
I here ya. ;) BUT you know some people and their need for the latest good deal or newest part. ;) I have a P35-DS3P which has CF capabilities already. ;) NOT that I'll use it but there it is... hehehe. :P
You know with the prices of the HD4850 coming down.. the GM might look a CF setup in the NOT so distant future... any comments on that GFX BOYS???? :P

good point GM, next time i shall, maybe then my subtle british humour will come through (where it should have done before).
and GM i woundnt CF with that board as the PCIE lanes would turn to 16x for the primary 4850 and 4x for the secondary, thats why a p45 is much better as it allows dual 8x and the x38/48 even better as it allows FULL dual 16x.
BUT CF 4850s will eat any res upto 1920x1200 stuffed with loads of AA and AF jsut as a snack :)
