One many thanks Dogbomb - any Idea how current the code listing is. Not ungreatfull just curious? As a partial answer to TDO123 there are several ways to determine which media is good to use . One is you can check the manual that came with your dvd burner if it has one and perhaps it will give you a listing of recommended media . You could search online for media that is recommended for your model/brand of burner, visit the dvd burner manufacturers website they should have something there or if not maybe their customer service dept. could recommend some media type/and brands for your purpose. Most branded -ie; name brancd media is very good . The thing is most dvd burners are set at the factory for several brands/types of media this programing is part of what is called -Firmware . It does'nt mean that other brands of media that are not listed in the firmware are bad they just may not burn at the rated speed in that particular burner. Example - I have a NEC- 2500A I hasd bought 100 Philips 8X dvd-r disc they burned well in the NEC-2500A but only at 4X I also bought a NEC-3500BLK and the Philips 8 X-DVD-R's burned @ 8x with no problems . see what I mean? Anyway I hope I gave you a general idea but if you want some specifics here goes - Taiyo yuden media is rated highly by just about everyone so that's a good choice. Verbatims Are also well thought of as well. Fuji brand media is excellent if you get the japanese made ones because the are (TAIYO YUDEN ) it will say made in japan near the UPC/BARCODE . Riteks are good from what I've read but you must stick with Riteks that are BRANDED -RITEK/RIDATA - word to the wise if your buying media online & you have'nt used that kind yet get a sample first or buy the minimum quantity you can! then you don't get stuck a load of frisbee's if they are'nt good. Above all else Read there are lot's of post on afterdawn.com concerning different brands /types of media & dvd Burners so some of them may help you and if all else fails ask questions - everyone I've met here (in the online sense) has been everso helpful to me more times then I could count! I give continued thanks to all of them ! Nephilim,SCuba Pete, Catfreak, Dogbomb -These fine gentleman are but a few of the Gold bars in this brain trust! No one will make you feel stupid or think your dumb . I mean no disrespect to those who i've not named specifically as I said thanx to you all . Sorry to run off at the keyboard ! All I did was copy and paste, so credit goes to the guy who compiled the list. ;) It's not a complete list nor should you rely on it 100% because there are occasions where you will have a few manufacturer IDs for the same brand and speed (i.e., Ridata 4X with RICOHJPN & RITEK03). As for best codes, I prefer RICOHJPN. My great burns with Fuji, Ridata, TDK and even earlier Memorex were with media that identified as RICOHJPN. Going by the kprobe and PI/PO error tests, Taiyo Yudens have almost flawless burns with MCC and RICOHJPN both coming up with very good results. It's not that important that I have totally flawless burns for movies, so buying Ridata instead of more expensive Verbatim and TYs is fine with me. BTW, I bought some Memorex with Infodisc labels. I've heard they are crap, but they are burning for me at least. :)

Princo.... Just the word starts people wanna flame me I can sense. What IS it with Princo? I have burned 500+ of the nice white logo-printed Princo DVDs on 4 different burners, Philips, NEC, BENQ, and, make that 5, 2 different LG burners. Only coasters I have produced are when that "#¤% XP crashes when I can't keep from working on the computer while burning ;=) So I guess I must be lucky.....

Anyone have any good things to say about Hp invent dvd + r 8x media? I just got some 50 packs from staples for $18.00 each. Never tried them before but the disc seems to be very thick and made well. Quality is good, but I have had problems with some friends freezing on some different type of media such as the verbatim, verbatim data life plus. I persoanally have no freezing but different players have shown to work differently. Anyone with info about this? Your info will be greatly appreciated !

The NEC 2500A doesnt write at 8x for the -R format (yeah i got and I feel like they falsely advertised it). You could throw and 8x -R disc at it and it would still write at 4x. But you can flash it to be a DL burner like I did so it evens out.

Hey i bought some Laser DVD-R 4x and used Nero to see the disk info and it said the manufacturer was SKC Co.,Ltd is this a good brand because i live in australia and i can get sony, shintaro, benq, verbatim, laser and mediacache where i live. Im testing diff ones to see what they're like. Are these good?

THAT is where it gets a bit tricky~ you need to be familiar with a particular brand and it's past history to KNOW what you will be getting, for the most part, it's taking a gamble..
branded companies change manufacturers fairly often, so, some of the "tricks of the trade" can be by looking on the spindle itself to distinguish "MADE IN JAPAN" or "MADE IN TAIWAN" on a few of the manufacturers (ie. Fuji MIJ 8x dvd+r are Yudens, Sony MIJ 8x dvd+r are Yuden coding as well, the MIT are NOT~!)
that is just an example...really depends on what you are looking for, i may be more help to you if you have a particular media code that has worked well for you in the past, i have a few tricks up my sleeve in locating a particular media code based on my OWN past history of buying media locally~ i naturally recommend to others Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim...let me know~
