@alien
it's ok...we ALL have had our fair share of bad media, it's a learning process...take it one step at a time~ :) i wasted plenty of $$ in the past buying CMC MAG crap, not knowing any better~ it happens to all of us at one point or another...not to worry, come check out more threads in the dvd-media forum where you will always find me recommending the Good from the Bad to the Ugly~ :)
Recommended Media:
Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

hi alien,
well, i assume even in Australia media is STILL produced in either Japan or Taiwan..am i correct in assuming that?
from your list..i would only stick with Sony (8x dvd+r MADE IN JAPAN is Taiyo Yuden, #1 recommended media, but must be MIJ for that to hold true) and secondly, Verbatim~ MCC coding is very good as well, MOST verbatims are MADE IN TAIWAN~ you might find some old stock made in singapore, but, i figure MOST you will find in AUS is probably MIT)
so, with that in mind here is the breakdown :
Sony dvd+r 8x MADE IN JAPAN (located on bar code on spindle)= TYs
Verbatim 8x both formats MADE IN TAIWAN= excellent media as well~
the others....stay away from, do yourself a favor and discontinue getting as you say, Quote: cr!@ disks
good luck~

Quote: am i correct in assuming that?
Yes you are correct.
When saying i live in australia i meant that it was hard to get good brand disks mentioned by people eg.TY's. Thanks for the info. The disks right now that i have are teac with the CMC MAG.AF1 code and laser which are SKC,CO LTD and havent used the laser ones as i am afraid that the disks will be cr@# and wont work.

Guys, how accurate are ATIP readings? I heard that they're not very reliable, and seeing a certain manufacturer in your cd/dvd-info software doesn't always mean that it's the real manufacturer.

you're quite right. the media code on it's own is not enough. always need to look at the disc itself too or packaging if possible.
For instance with TY discs there are codes on the inner hub that verify whether they're fake or not
Main PC ~ Intel C2Q Q6600 (G0 Stepping)/Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500/Zalman CNPS9700/Antec 900/Corsair HX 620W
Network ~ DD-WRT ~ 2node WDS-WPA2/AES ~ Buffalo WHR-G54S. 3node WPA2/AES ~ WRT54GS v6 (inc. WEP BSSID), WRT54G v2, WRT54G2 v1. *** Forum Rules ***

Guys, futureshop right now has a sale on 25-packs of 8x fujifilms (both + and - R). I usually get -R, so if I get a package, there's a fifty fifty chance that they will be TY's or FujisilmS03.
What are tehse odds? Should I try it out? Is there any way to tell which one they are without buying them (like, the "made in..." message on the spindle? I know TY's are great, but what about FujiS03, what are these like?
