Well I have a lot of love for older games, in a lot of ways FFVII was the beginning of the end for quality RPG's. I really liked FFX, the story was great, the characters had depth, and there were plenty of side quests. There's hope though, there are a rash of good games coming out this year, which several people have already listed. 2006 may go down as a golden year for PS2 RPG's.

Just to note. How anyone can critisize ff7 is beyond me, but everyone has their own opinion. Alot of people who critisize ff7 and it playstation sequels are influenced too much by that nostalgic factor of the good old snes days I feel. Will be interesting to hear why some people dont like final fantasy 7.
Thanks, need to start writing coherently.

Yeah it bewilders me too. Its like saying i dont like pies. Who says that? Who doesnt like pies? What is the point of this conversation? Some things just cant be answered. What is Tojikins purpose in life? Lol thats the most un-answerable one by far. Why do triangle sandwiches taste so much better than rectangle ones? Lol. Sighhhhhhh.... Off to Uni in two days, all my friends left behind.... :-(

Well to answer the first question, I didn't criticize FFVII, I said
Quote: in a lot of ways FFVII was the beginning of the end for quality RPG's.
This is an old point lost on a lot of the younger generation. I liked FFVII. It was and still is a great game. It brought RPG's into the mainstream. Before FFVII, the RPG market was a niche market. With limitations on techology, game companies were forced to give you plot twists, character development, and outstanding gameplay. After FFVII, Sony, Capcom, Square, Konami, Namco, and every other company raced to churn out games which emphasized the technical capabilities of the PSX, rather than plot, characters, and gameplay. In all but the best RPG's, those things were thrown to the curb in favor of 3D rendered characters, cinemas, and battle scenes. What resulted was a lowering of standards (in my opinion) it terms of plot and character development. In trying to appeal to mass consumers instead of the devoted RPG faithful, a lot of the elements that made old games like Lufia 2, Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 3, Tales of Phantasia, FFIV, V, VI, and Dragon Quest VI so enjoyable were forgotten. The game companies sold their souls to churn out forgettable crap like Legend of Dragoon, Wild Arms 2, Jade Cocoon, and a host of others. In a lot of hard core RPG fans opinions, it was the end of an era for RPG's. In a way it's come full circle. With the amazing technical capabilities of the next gen systems the market is littered with eye popping stink fests. Because of this, even the mainstream RPG audience is becoming more discerning. The result is simple: a return to the true RPG roots of great plots, interesting characters, and immersive, non linear worlds. Not coincidentally you see the advent of DQVIII, FFXII, SH3, KH2, Grandia 3, Suikoden V, Valkyrie Profile 2, Tales of Legendia and others. The game companies are starting to return to the old ways of doing things. You can have tremendous visuals, interesting characters, great plots, all in the same game. You don't have to sacrfice one for the other. I think that's why we've scene the recent stream of quality RPG's. Whew, I hope it didn't take you as long to read this as it took me to type it. Cheers!

Agh. IGN have posted a review for Grandia III, though its not the spectacular game both they and I thought it would be. I quite trust the guy when it comes to reviews, so i sort of get what hes saying. A disppointment, the plot has been shortened (its only about 20-30 hours now) and the characters are a little bland. The battle system saves it from being jsut an average game though. Oh well, i guess i'll have to play it to believe it. I liked the other Grandia games, hope this one at least emulates a little that old style. The full review can be found here:

Heh, im still downloading ToL, but i fear the worst. Im downloadng 3 versions at the moment a (PS2 Kor Tales of Legendia, which i fear will be in Korean) is done bout 8.9%. The other links are going really slow, one from Mininova, and the other from ps2rip.net. Its going damn slow, which gives me time to finish DQVIII. Oh yeah, ive ordered Magna Carta for a few quid off ebay, not sure if its any good though. It got a bad review on IGN too, but u cant always listen to someone elses opinion lol

Magna Carta is okay. Gamespot gave it a 7.1. I "acquired" a copy. I've "acquired" several rare PS2 games for which there are no torrents, mostly RPG's. I backed up an original copy of Tales as well. I don't trust Echelon releases. The one I downloaded seemed to work fine, but I'll probably use the one I backed up from an original. I burned one to Taiyo Yuden's 8x DVD-R's, the other to High Grade Hitachi Maxells( MIJ) DVD+R's booktyped to DVD-ROM. Both play perfectly. If you guys don't already, use quality media for PS2 backups like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, MIJ Maxell's, or MIJ Sony's. Oh well, I'm sure Grandia III is still worth getting. The first one was great, the second one was good, we'll see about the third one. Cheers!

Yeah the other one looked nice, the flashing was just too much to deal with. Maybe I'll try out photoshop, everybody else seems to be having success with it. Maybe I'll just ask Phantom69 to make me a cool sig. I had a hard enough time with the Gimp, Photoshop may just be my undoing lol. Uh just beat the Dragon Graveyard in DQVIII. It was tough, the enemies could all do massive damage. I actually had to heal quite a bit. This is an optional stage, anybody who may decide to this stage, make sure you're at pretty high level with good abilities first. I was at level 35-38 with Yangus maxed out in axe skills and the hero maxed out in sword skills. Even with that and Jessica casting Kaboom almost every fight, it was tough. Some combos of enemies in that stage are dangerous, when you get status attackers and heavy hitters, yuck. I ran when I encountered that combo. Anyway I'm rambling, anyone who hasn't tried ”torrent, do so. Cheers!

Whoa Grandia III releases tomorrow(hopefully), guess ill be able to get it soon. Lol Tokijin i keep spelling your name wrong, oh well from now on you shall be known (By me anyway) as Tojikin. If your going to get into PS then get some tutorials to start you off, you'll find that when you first start out your as slow as a snail and its hard to figure out what the hell all the buttons and functions do. @ Tsoldier, theres quite a few DBZ sites out there that you can d/l episodes and sagas off, but they're pretty much all with anti-leech. Shouldnt worry you if you have anything better than dialup. You could also try torrents, ive seen many torrents around with whole sagas up for download.

Holy Crap I can see again, cheerz Boobooman!! Lol
Anyone who likes DBZ why don't you do what I'm doing and search for a torrent with EVERY saga/episode and download it one saga at a time, need more seeders! :)
Oh yeh back to the quality media thread I use 8xVerbatim genuine TY and they play back beautifully not recommended for use with the SH-W162c burner but on the Liteon they burn like a dream!!!
Oh yeah on the Dragon Graveyard I managed to scrape through (inc. the X-tremely hard bosses) at a measly lv31, kept on using an A rank monster team combined with a King of Dumbai's oomph(or whatever you call him), and on the bosses just used oomph, kabuff and sap a hell of alot, works!! Oh yeah and Angelo's snigger ability is Xtremely useful on the bosses also.
If neones getting really peed off searching torent sites for specific things use this (especially if you browsing speed is xtremely slow)
http://ts.kurtubba.com/
There yago:
http://www.btsites.tk/ Spent a couple of hours registering and book marking all these and recommend ne1 who's serious bout torrents to check it out.
Enjoy! ;)

Too many RPGs so little time! I have mounds and mounds of PSX RPGs I still haven't beaten. Damn you Grandia III and ToL!!!
Photoshop can be your friend if you sit down and do some tut's like DW said. Though if you've used the GIMP or Paintshop Pro picking it up shouldn't be that hard.
Back to DQVIII and WoW for me...
Signature? What signature!? Oh wait...I actually have one
now.

I'm sure I can figure out Photoshop, I just don't have time right now. Midterms, Midterms, Midterms lol. I like's getting A's and those Midterms aren't going to study themselves. Yeah I have an arse load of good PSX RPG's, around 50-80 of the 100 or so PSX backups I have total. I just don't have time what with all the PS2 games I've been "acquiring." Plus all my PSX games are backed up on Memosux CD-R's, I'd have to transfer them to Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or Sony CD-R's. On a happy note, I finally got a high quality conversion of FFVII: AC on DVD. I used the Film Machine with CCE. My processor sucks and CCE makes 4 passes by default, so it took 12 hours to convert! My first attempt worked, but I left the subs too big. This time I used 20pt font instead of 26, seemed to work fine. I'm off to do some homework, my reward for that will be... FFVII: Advent Children. Cheers!

Lol man i had trouble with my FF7AC. It was an NTSC Xvid video with a resolution of 608x304 or something, and the aspect isnt 16:9 or 4:3, its around 2.21:1. I had to do lots of converting and editing to get the video to 720x576 Pal video for DVD + subtitles.

Yeah try The Film Machine in the future. It has a built in option to convert video files to PAL or NTSC. CCE Encoder is like $2,000, of course you could "acquire" a copy. That's what everyone else does. Cheers!

I havent used the film machine yet, i prefer to use all the programs independently so i can customise everything and anything. Lol yes, im i may have acquired a copy... I use VirtualDub and VdubMod, CCE, Tmpgenc Plus, Avi Script, Avi Synth, DgDecode/Dvd2Avi and quite a few other programs. Its quite easy to convert NTSC to PAL and vice versa, its pretty much just a frame rate conversion and a bit of tweaking of the resolution. The hard part is getting it to DVD resolution whilst keeping the aspect ratio correct, it almost always fails if you use 16:9 so i have to use 4:3 with black bars. You have to be careful if you just convert the video too, the audio can be left behind depending on what program you use and ruins the sync. Yikes 12 hours! The longest its ever taken me on my laptop is about 3 and a half hours. Hmm i might go play DQVIII. Im still at the start, i havent even gotten that crystal ball by the waterfall yet. I get bored easily and just fight a bit then quit. Man you need so many herbs - one thing i noticed is that there is no turn indicator, that is, you cant tell what order your turns are going to go in. Makes it kind of difficult if your in a critical situation. Lol its quite funny when you go to a town and enter, and a coffin glides beside you. Also, when you buy stuff and give it to the dead guy, the seller says he'll just put it in his coffin lol. Im putting my skill points on swords for Hero. Man i went up to one of those Mecha-Mina or whatever birds, but one that was hovering around on the grass. It had a different name, like aerial guardian or something. It attacked and i was like Holy Shit im outta here!! Anyway off to play....
