Yeah the big spike is where the layer break is. You get that on all DL scans, regardless.

I'd stay well clear of them Yulyo. Not worth buying on the off chance.
Just go for Sony's or something :-)

Hi guys, this is my my first post here after much lurking.
After learning very much, I've purchased a set of TY 16xDVD+R's and flashed my Pioneer 111D to the Dangerous Brother's 111L firmware so that my discs will by booktyped to DVD-ROM. (See how dangerous you've made me?)
My main goal is to produce some home moveies that will have maximum compatiblity in friend's and family's set-top DVD players.
I have scans of the TUDEN000-T03's burned at 4x, 8x and 16x, and I'd like to know
1) Why aren't they as good as some of the the other TY posts here?
2) What's with the crazy spike in errors just under the 3Gb mark?
3) Which of these burns are within acceptible tolerances for distribution?
TIA, and Merry Christmas!
-Allen
Here is a scan from a disc burned at 4x:

Here is one burned at 8x: (Why the failure spikes?)

And, finally, one burned at 16x:

well your 1st and 3rd post look pretty good very low PIF's how ever your PIE's are a little high even though they are under the 280 mark they are still high. i have heard from others who know more about them that your PIF spikes you shouldnt worry bout if they arent over 8 which is where your is at, on your 2nd scan.. myself i dont like them over 3. its kinda hard to say (for me anyway) what causes the spikes.has something to do with the pits how the disc is read.
Main thing is how do they play you reall cant go by these scans alone.....
hope this helps ya some

Thanks for the fast response! You say it's not too bad, but your prior post complaining about the Verbatim's looks to be a better scan! (Ok, you got 5 PIF's, but much lower PIE's.)
Shouldn't I be getter lower PIE's with such reputable discs and (I thought) a reputable burner?
Should I go buy a better burner? If yes, what would be avail at my local stores that would be better?

Hi Allen42
Like cincy said a scan is just a scan. Real proof is the playback.
I have scans that are absolutely horrible - but still play and can be re ripped. My biggest test.
Pioneer's - just my experience are ok for scanning but I have an older Pioneer so just basing it on that.
Great burner and discs that I burned on it 2 years ago are still good no matter what the scans says :)
Try them out on a few of the different dvd players - you might just be fine.
Mine- TY 8 & 16x and Verb 16x are played on many different players w/ a very high (99.9) success rate.

Well, I've been going around and playing the 8x (the worse one) in the various players in the house. The only problem I've had is my son's Compaq computer's DVD player started skipping and looping. All of the STBs in the house seem to play it fine, tho.
The 4x played fine in all machines, and we're testing the 16x now.
Here's the kicker... I just re-scanned the 16x, and came up with:
PIEs
Avg: 37.34
Max: 159
Total: 465803
PIFs
Avg: .24
Max: 8
Total: 2415
Way worse!!! So, it looks like you may be right, the Pioneer isn't a reliable scanner/burner?
I'm perfect ready to spend more money to get this right. Can't I run to Fry's, Best Buy, Staples, CompUSA, or something and buy a drive that will definately provide no probs? I just need to know exactly what to get!!

Your son's dvd player in the Compaq's may need a firmware update (if it's not up to date). 16x media is newer media so that mightbe the problem.
Now I won't dump the Pioneer just cause of the scans - it's probably a good drive - my older is. Scans are another thing - doesn't mean it's not a good burner.
I won't put to much stock in scans - base it more on playback. So far it's looks like the drive is burning well.
To achieve 100% playback on all players and set ups is pretty much impossible imho. You can get very close though and sounds like you are.
If you want to pick up a 2nd drive check out newegg.com for the LiteOn's. Plextor is good too but 3x or more as much.

You guys are great. I guess I'll keep this set-up and wait and see if I get anything returned from the family. I've got about 25 hours of captured DV video to go, so my Christmas break will be busy!
Good night, and (almost) Merry Christmas Eve all.

Xmas eve here just barely though :)
Keep your current set up - may just be fine but on biggie adding another burner to test things out - esp when a LiteOn a newegg.com is about $30

those verbs ive done those scans on are a newer disc. they have a different code than the normal verbs thats what is worring me about those compared to the goood stuff... the one scan i have up there with the high of 5 PIF's i watched it lastnight and my oldest son is watching it on his playstation2 now. not a problem one clear no skipping or pixels in it.. we all want the scans to be more reliable but there not...
i have a HP740i burner was my first it didnt do a good job burning but i have found that useing it to read and rip and then burn with my lite-on SHW160-P6S it is a great combo.i dont burn with it any more just my liteon let the HP do the reading and the liteon do the writing...
Like binkie7 said you can get the same liteon from newegg.com for 30 buck.. catch it onsal like i did and get it for 28 shipped..

this is of the theatrical version of wickerman that i did lastnight and got a 90 on Nero....looks alot better than Nero. seems like these disc seem to get worse towards the ending of the disc.

im wanting better scores out these disc but not taking my own advise not to put much stock into these scans..lol OCD'ing again.. wanting them to be as good as the MCC004 are...would bug me as much if i had bought them but my parents got them for me for X-mas....
Merry Christmas to everyone....

My first spindle of Taiyo Yuden's burnt with the LG 4480B DVD combo drive :), I do not know how to read the results but from common sense I would have to say these are good. I payed 100 dollars for the LG dvd drive in March 2003, still a great drive.

On Newegg, which Liteon? I have 16x +R's at the moment, and I read that booktyping is important, so which model do you recommend? I also have DL dvds, but haven't started using them much, but would like a DL burner.
