I've just ordered myself a PC including an X1900XT (with a fair few other nicities besides) so I'll let you know what it's like. Was only going to get the GT but was told it was "discontinued" (after 2 weeks of sale???!!!) so bit the bullet and went XT with Sapphire. Can't wait. PCI express, dual core, Raptor, Ultra-violet, all these technologies hitting me at the same time!

Estuansis,

For me, I'm stuck with AGP for a few months so it will be the X850XT because it's simpley the best AGP card on the planet!

Indeed it is. For AGP I'm amazed, I thought cards like mine would be the limit. Who needs a 7800GS? Lol.

The X1900XT? That cost me a grand £327 out of the total £1250 odd.
I would look up the 1800GTO but I can't get to newegg at the moment! It's a mere £125 over here, less than the X850XT which goes for about £140 PCIe, and £180 AGP.

Only if you're overclocking big time, it's not all that for everyone. How about a 19" widescreen instead, FIHSNERD?

for example the models on this page:

Everyone,
My power supply went west the night before last.
Never was really happy with it. 12v always showed 11.69v.
Now running a hytec 550watt ATX2 dual 12v rail 36amp(18ampx2)psu.
This thing has a 12cm fan and is totally silent!12v shows a nice healthy
12.17volts.I am going to see if the new psu allows me to overclock a bit more. Will let you know how it goes.

These are the facts! #1 The 20.1" has the same picture height as a 19" CRT! The 19s are about an inch less. #2 19"s can't do 1680x1050 but are stuck with resolutions that are less than optimal! #3 19"s can't match the native resolution of Widescreen DVDs which is much higher than 1200x900 or 1440x900 of a 19! #4 the 20.1 has 1,764,000 Pixels while the best available 19 only has 1,296,000, a difference in overall picture detail of almost half a million Pixels! You can't see the spots if you don't have the dots!!!

Stick with the Sceptre, it's the better buy all around. when I went looking for a widescreen I looked at all of them. I went to Fry's, Compusa, Circut City and Best buys. I looked at them all! The only thing that compare are some other brands that use the same model LCD screen. It's been one of the best buys I've ever made in my life. I replaced the best 19" Flatscreen CRT I ever owned with it and I've never looked back or wanted my old CRT back! Buy one! You will thank me!!!

FISHNERD,

I can't speak for the BenQ because I've never seen one. I don't think it's picture quality will be as good as the Sceptre because of the Sceptre's higher contrast ratio and it's 176 degree viewing angle, all directions. As far as game resolutions go I would guess that it wouldn't have any problems as whatever it is in XP that sorts out the screen positioning, it's always been perfect except for Power DVD 6 sometimes gets confused and I just reset the video. Every game I've played so far including the original Doom and Doom2 play wide-screen without stretching! I have Doom3 but I need a better video card for that. In Delta Force Extreme if I turn the widescreen off, it stays widescreen with no change. I've done screen shots both ways and their is no difference. If you do get a BenQ I'm sure it will be just the same, as XP addresses the 20.1 16:9 widescreen format.

baltekmi,

Something is definately wrong. Your MIPS in the math bench should be a lot better. Now all we have to do is figure out whats making them so low!

Here's what you do. Boot up the machine and enter the setup. Open the soft menu setup and look at the external clock, it should read 200/66/33 MHz. If it doesn't read 200 go down 3 spaces to N/B Strap CPU As and change the setting to PSB800 if it's not already set there. Even if all of this is correct, make sure the AGP/PCI bus is locked at 66/33MHz. Then go to the advanced chipset features and re-set the timings to 2.5-4-4-6 and fire it up. Do another set of benches, justMath and Memory Bandwidth as the Multi-Media isn't needed. Then post them. Once I see them I can make a little more sense out of what's going on.

I have your MB Manual but it well and truely sucks! I've been switching back and forth as I wrote this post. It's weird because while it tells you what the adjustments do it doesn't indicate what the available settings are. I can tell you this, you aren't doing as good at 3.71 than I was doing at 3.40 with my 3.0! And I know that ain't right!

In my humble opinion, I'd stick the rebate up the bum, I still wouldn't want a BenQ. Go for the Sceptre that theonejrs has, you americans are lucky being able to buy those.
Nice to see you stick with the roots, theonejrs, Doom 2 classic!
I still play it on this machine (and will do on the next) with Risen3D. Lol Abit may rule, but their manuals don't it seems!

I have to admit that it would be easier if I had the computer here. Something is very wrong with this one. 8903MIPS at 3.71 sucks. It should be over 10,000 with that fsb and 464MHz memory speed. He has good memory bandwidth although I'de trade some of it for better MIPS. Even my 3.0 Prescott does better than that at 3.4 (over 9200MIPS! At his speed of 3.71 I get 10693 so something is not right. Once I see the next set of benches, I'll have a lot better Idea of what to look for. I know one thing for sure, it's got a bunch in it's undies somewhere. The present numbers just don't add up. With the CPU at 3.71 it should be faster by about 10% or so. If he had heat issues I'de be looking for Throtling problems, but his temps are good! I don't see any settings in the manual for adjusting just where throtling starts, like mine. There's a 16 Min. setting for "Delay Before Thermal"! Not on my machine!!!

In all fairness to baltekmi, the design of that particular MB is old! It's an old 333 mB design that's been spruced up with a faster 533/800MHz bus All the refrences in the manual point to older and slower CPUs, 2.2 or so. The chipset is an 875P so it's not exactly up to date either. The Bios (Award!) really is junk. It apears that it gives you a lot of control when it doesn't. I mean, what's the point of having an option in the setup that's blue with an X next to it, which means there is no option because you can't use it!! At least Asus buries most of what you can't use so you don't even see it at all unless your processor and memory support the various functions. AH!!! American Megatrends! Love Em!!! Last I want to have him look closer at the MB temp compared to the proc temp!

I'de even go along with power supply, which I have a test for as well. Just unplug the power from each drive except the hard drive. Then do a RB/CCE run from the hard drive. Pisses me off as if I was there, I could load test the PS. Speaking of which, I took the cheap 500 Watt Aspire apart and found the quality to be excelent. It folds it's tent at 518 Watts while not exceeding it's line load rating The gripe about the wires loose in the plugs is meaningless. Lose wires on that particular plug have been a way of life since the first PC. In fact the original design called for loose wires in the plugs so if some "Do-Do" bent one of the power pins the plug would stand a better chance of mating. That's some pretty large and long pins. If the plug goes on, no problem with the connection. I've built right around 600 computers over these last 23 years and I've rarely ever seen a power plug failure, and most of them were caused by someone pulling on the wires instead of the plug! I had one burned the plug dark brown. This turned out to have been caused by his 10,000 RPM SCSI drive, that was the size of a small loaf of Rasin Bread decided it's bearings had had enough. The torque load kept shifting as one bearing got tighter than the other. It loaded down the PS so bad that on the plug that was burned, the solder was melted out of the pins on the drive. You could see the wires in the now hollow pins. I figure it was trying to pull 14 Amps or so when the drive ate itself. Anyway, whatever is wrong with baltekmi's computer, we will figure it out!!

Happy Computering,
theonejrs

Yeah I haven't gone into many details, but this current machine has an AMI BIOS and I've found it a doddle to get round. I assume an A8N-SLi SE will be the same in that sense?
Ouch that's a gruesome story, glad I didn't have to deal with that!

From what I understand this company set the world of LCD TVs on fire over there with it's high quality, inovative LED technology and low prices. It's specs are way better than it's $199 (USD) price would indicate. Check it out!!!

I'm swanning off with the new one to university. The old one's staying here, once its been stabilised and reformatted.
Fihsnerd, that doesn't really belong in this thread, but numerous games aren't compatible with image recording which is why I don't use them. BF2 is one of thousands.
