Anyway, back to the grind. Do any of you guys know how far Sopocles OCed the Pentium D 805 with his build? What's the highest you guys know of someone OCing it stabily?
As far as I know he has played a bit at 3.9, but so far 3.8 seems to be best. I might add that I think the highest speed most people will see is in the 3.4 to 3.5 range, especially with very low priced motherboards. I know one person who was stuck at 3.4 because his MB lacked the ability to up the voltages. It takes a good MB, High quality memory, A good power supply and a damn good CPU cooler to get it past 3.6 or so.

I'm using the same MB as Sophocles for my D940 and it runs as smooth as glass at 3.81, a nice healthy overclock of 20% and my temps max out at 42 to 44C while encoding with RB/CCE! Here's the benchmarks!

Very nice. Apparently a 20% OC on a Prescott is nigh unheard of. I've come to find the reason my Celeron doesn't encode video well is likely because it has a small L2 cache, apparently a common trait amongst Celerons.

No, 20% is about the limit for the experienced. It's not unheard of, but much above it is.

If it is, it's a very manageable and fast one. The benches I posted before are just a couple of benches I grabbed from when I was testing. Here's the finals!

These were done after I tweaked the memory timings to 2.5-4-4-5. Please note that these benches were achieved after lowering the memory speed to about stock (396MHz) settings by locking it at 320MHz and then increasing the fsb! I'm not only impressed, I'm very happy!!!

If that were to use the AMD rating, it'd be about 4700+ I'd say. That's stunning for a CPU as cheap as the 940.

Yeah!! I think I got a good deal for the $375 I spent for the MB and the CPU. The D805 might be the Most bang for the buck but I think the D940 is more manageable temperature wise at 3.8 than the D805. The only time my temps climb over 42 - 44C is if I don't pay attention to the room temps. At 29C ambient it will hit 47C. Since I usually keep the room at 21C or so, no problems. Since 47C was idle for my Prescott and 58C the high, I guess I'm doing all right. I live in what's termed "The High Desert" so it do get hot here! 43C ouside is not uncommon in the sumertime.

That's our night time temperature without the air conditioner. When both the Swamp cooler in the front of the house is running and I'm runnung the AC in my room I can actually get the CPU temp to run below room temp at idle. I think it's because of the very high humidity in the air caused by the Swamp Cooler that's passing through the cooler and evaporating.

I'm at 24% right now with my 3.0/800 Prescott. Taking in what I learned building my D940 Dual-Core, when I get it running again, I'm going to see if it can hit 25%. I had to canabalize my Prescott a bit to build this one. It should be up and running next week. I'm waiting for a lower CPU cooler retention bracket from Asus. It broke when I installed the Intel cooler.

The thing I'm most anxious to find out is what affect locking the memory speed at 320 will have on it's performance. It should still run faster than 400 but not quite the 490MHz that it's running right now. Doing this on my D940 made a huge difference, not only in my benchmarks but in the real world performance as well.

MMMMM... make that a 4750+!!! I started out expecting to get it comfortably running at 3.6. It did that so easy that I just kept going, all the way up to 3.81GHz. I never expected to see a 20% overclock out of the D940. I mean it's the third best of the D900 Series so I didn't expect very much headroom. To me it's a heck of a bargain at $228 right now at newegg. I can't wait until I get the X850XT for it. One of the games I like to play is Delta Force Extreme. my 5200 will play it at it's highest resolution but the detail is lacking and all the stuff to improve it won't work, at least on a 4 Pixel Pipeline card like the 5200! The X850XT will allow all the bells and whistles as well. Not to mention 16 Pixel Pipelines, same as the big boys! Suposedly it's the fastest AGP card on the planet and can be reasonably overclocked as well! For $239 at newegg it's a great buy!

Stay Tuned, the fun has just begun!

aabbccdd,

If you can cancel that 175 Denmark and get the 170 Denmark, you will get a better CPU for less money! Sophocles over at the hounds has one running at 2.7GHz. Since it started out as a 2.0GHz chip, that's a phenominal overclock! Seems that someone at AMD decided to make some changes to the stepping in the 170 and didn't tell anybody. They just left it for the enthusiasts to discover! At 2.7GHz it runs cooler than my Pressler. I've never seen real numbers like that before, 24 Thousand MIPS!!! The 175 won't do that!!

and my F'dad locked me out of the bios.. but i have the Uguru if i feel stupid.. :)

i think i am going to get the card you showed me, and/but i am still going to get the 20.1 inch widescreen.. :)

Oh and btw ddp, no offense meant but have you ever written a long post? I realise, why use 15 words when 4 will do, but you take concise to the extreme!
