It is indeed, hence how it was able to get such high scores at a low price. All that said though the 3870 is almost as fast and has far better features, so I would either go with a 3870 or a G92-8800GTS. The 8800GTX is maybe on average 5% faster than the new 8800GTS, so other than for running Crysis on huge resolutions, the GTX is now not really so useful, a bit like the old GTS.

New tom's hardware benchmarks in, the average result for the G92 version of the 8800GTS is a mere 5% away from the 8800GTX. I still say that's a reasonable deal for someone looking for extended performance from a single card. Overclocking yields are 9%.

what will happen if GTX is built on G92?...it will be much faster
theres one thing i don't get...HD3870 has newer technology and faster clock speed than HD 2900XT, but HD3870 is just behind HD2900XT

Laptops can be overclocked, but will quickly run into cooling issues usually. Unless you're willing to modify the laptop extensively (such that it isn't portable any more) you'll find heat a real issue under heavy load.

Quote: I am talking about the new G92 8800GTS BTW
How much is something like this over what I already have now? I will likely go with the MSI or ASUS. How does the BFG or XFX rate in upper end cards? I already spent $325+ I will put asside a $600. budget for my single ATI later ito next year but for now...
I'm not needing to spend more then $350 for a 2nd card. It is gonna hold me over till I deside what ATI HD card I want for my main X38 mobos. I will likely convert to Crossfire and drop SLI for now. So I only need a good medium level single nVidia for some gaming for the fam, but 2D tweakabliity for my HD media work and playback. I also like the idea of the single slot cooling so I can add my own if I OC it enough.

Well, the 8800GTS G92 is pretty much as fast as an 8800GTX, but using 512MB of RAM. It also costs around $100 or £50 less. The HD3870 is only as fast as an 8800GT, but uses newer pixel shading and Directx support technology than any of the 8800s, the new GTS included.

How hot does it get doing it compared to the 8800GT?
Just Curious!

IF you have the 8800Gt, then the G92 8800GRS is not that much better.
I wouldn't get it, I would just wait for the new Nvidia cards.

Agreed. If you can afford the G92 version of the GTS then go for it over the GT, but there's little reason to upgrade from a GT to GTS.

Oooh burn!
Anyway you guys probably don't remember this, but in my old PC I had PC-8000 ram that all software programs showed as PC-6400. Now that RAM could overclock much higher than my current PC-6400 RAM.
So is PC-8000 RAM just overclocked versions of the same chip? Kind of like how Core 2 Duos work? The E6850 is just a higher clocked E6750.

In a sense, that's right. PC8500 RAM doesn't exist, it is PC6400 RAM that's been overclocked to run at effective PC8500 speed. The E6850 vs E6750 is the same process but in reverse. Rather than taking particularly good yielding examples and overclocking them, they take the underperforming variants and underclock them. The reason you can overclock any core 2 duo to be faster than even the E6850 is because the core 2 production process is so good now that there simply aren't very many underperforming chips any more, certainly not with the G0 stepping.

abuzar1,
Quote: The E6850 is just a higher clocked E6750.
Not quite! An E6750 is a chip that has failed some criteria in Intel's stringent testing that doesn't meet the higher standards set for the E6850. All series chips work that way and filter down to the next lowest model. All the cores are the same in a series but some will perform better than others. 6850, 6750, 6550 and so on down the list.
At one time Intel used to take a perfectly good 486DX chip and deliberately crippled the math co-processor in it to make a 486SX chip. Intel's done some other stupid things as well. When they had a minor math problem with one of their chips years ago, they destroyed thousands of chips. Since the problem would have only affected the Scientific community, they should have donated them to Schools where children could have benefited from them. Instead we they got front page Newspaper coverage of all the IRS guys running around, supervising each chips destruction and marking it on their clipboards! LOL!!

No, but Intel was the only one I ever saw that made front page headlines about it with pictures of all these "pencil Neck" clowns running around with clipboards recording each and every one destroyed! ROFLMAO!

Do you remember when Atari made millions of copies of the ET game expecting it to be a smash hit? The game was a complete flop and they supposedly buried the millions of unsold cartridges in the desert rather than give them away for free!

ET Phone Home! LOL!! That was the rumor! Coleco was taking all their game business away from Atari at the time and they figured that if they gave them away, it would somehow show that the Colecovision was a better system! Actually, it was! LOL!! I still enjoy playing them with an emulator on my computer! LOL!!
