I have suffered this problem all week and have read all the posts so far, have now got about 10 coasters. Although I prefer Nero managed to borrow Easy CD Creator 6. Uninstalled Nero6 and installed this. No problems burning at all. No error messages.

Are you connecting your burner to a USB 2.0 port? Here's a link that will help you determine if you are:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000602.htm
Are your USB and chipset drivers up to date?
Also the CMC media you're using is very low quality and bound to give you problems. I'd recommend using some quality media such as Ritek RiDATA, Verbatim Metal AZO, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden. You'd also be wise to pick up a quality rewritable DVD to use until you get this sorted out.

With my burner (Pioneer DVR-108) the difference between a burn at 12x and one at 8x is appr. the difference between 7 and 8.5 minutes as far as I remember - it is not a lot anyway. So there's not much to gain in that sense, but it is disappointing buying a setup that doesn't perform as expected. And in my case it turns out that burns fail at all speeds which I am definitely not willing to settle with. :-)
I have not yet nailed the component at fault definitely, but the prime suspect is the NVidia NForce3 150 chipset in my laptop. I tested the same setup (burner, enclosure and Nero software) with a different laptop and found that burns were successful at up to 8x whereas 2 out of 3 burns failed at 12x (w. the usual 'SCSI command aborted' message). Mounting the burner internally via IDE, burns were successful at 12x. Mounting the drive in a 2+ years old firewire enclosure and connecting to the firewire port on my laptop, burns were also successful at 12x.
Conclusion:
The USB interface on my laptop is unstable. All 3 ports are bad whereas the firewire port is fine. The NVidia NForce3 150 chipset handles the USB ports but not firewire. I read somewhere that the NForce2 chipsets were causing these problems too. I think it is embarrassing for NVidia if their chipsets are at fault, because they deliberately chose not to support firewire, arguing that USB will be the preferred choice in the future. But notice that the majority of issues with burners in external enclosures apply to the USB interface. It appears that when it comes to the test - sustained high throughput - USB fails where good old firewire delivers. Doesn't look like a good choice to me.
It also looks like Nero has some issues. Two posts in this thread indicate that Roxio software worked where Nero didn't, so it appears that Nero and USB 2.0 is a vulnerable combination as of now. Craig would know more about that. :-) If he is still with us, I have a couple of questions:
1) A simulation appears to be the only way to really determine if burns are likely to succeed or fail at a given speed (the maximum speed test sure doesn't do the job here). Why is it not possible to do simulations with DVDs?
2) My Nero logs show about 100 entries with a 'Queue again later' message whether burns are successful or not. I've noticed that most other users don't have these. What are they caused by?
3) Would it be possible to detect the chipsets (both in the computer and in the enclosure) and the driver versions and report these in the Nero log? That would definitely be helpful for diagnostics too.
Chynk: If you have the opportunity, hook your burner up with a different computer, preferably one with a different chipset, and see if that works.

I'd suggest that in the future you switch to RW discs after two coasters in a row. Keep erasing the screw ups until you get the problem solved and then you can switch back to plain old R. Saves a little on the $wallet$

I too had this same problem but only when trying to burn a dual layeer disc.
Had a NEC ND-2510a drive, made into an external.
THis isnt much help but what I did was returned it and bought an external Sony and it woke up and burned just fine with Nero, Record Now Max, and Dvddecrypter.

@flyvholm,
What I meant by my previous statement is that the manufacturers are pushing the speeds way beyond what is sensible given that the DVD format isn't mature yet. Sure they may get great results under controlled conditions but it's an entirely different story when the products are used in real life situations.
I'm firmly convinced there's a healthy amount of marketing behind these speeds being introduced. Take the average person who doesn't know any better and give them a choice between a 4X and a 16X burner - which do you think they're going to pick? It's more about selling drives than it is being responsible.

Hi Flyvholm,
I'm still around, just not consistently. :-)
I'll try and respond to your questions below:
1) A simulation appears to be the only way to really determine if burns are likely to succeed or fail at a given speed (the maximum speed test sure doesn't do the job here). Why is it not possible to do simulations with DVDs?
Answer: Simulation is possible with DVD. If you look at the log file provided by CHYNK you'll see that Simulate was enabled, and it did do a simulation at 2x speed.
2) My Nero logs show about 100 entries with a 'Queue again later' message whether burns are successful or not. I've noticed that most other users don't have these. What are they caused by?
Answer: The 'Queue again later' error can be caused by a number of issues. Most common are caused by communication problems. Which are normally caused by old drivers for the IDE/USB/1394 controllers, old firmware on the recorder, old versio of Nero software, driver conflicts, poor cables, over heating, etc.
Basiclly, a Queueing error indicates the Recorder was busy when the last command was issues, which is normally a write command, so the command goes into a Queue to await for the recorder to free up. After a set time, the command is reissued. Eventually, if the command is not accepted, the write process times out and an error message is generated.
3) Would it be possible to detect the chipsets (both in the computer and in the enclosure) and the driver versions and report these in the Nero log? That would definitely be helpful for diagnostics too.
Answer: I would suspect its possible, and I can request this from our team in Germany.
Note: For those who have issues with USB devices with Nero, but not with other programs such as Roxio, try removing the WNASPI32.DLL file from the C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero directory, or just rename it to .bac extension. And make sure you have the SYSTEM ASPI driver loaded, such as Adaptecs, and see if this resolves your issue. As this is more than likely an ASPI driver issue. Nero software defaults to the Nero ASPI, but if that is not found in the Nero folder, we will default to the SYSTEM ASPI. Just a possible solution.
Regards,
Craig

I had the exact same problem with an external NEC 2510 Dual layer. Kept on getting the scsi command crap. Doing all of the updates and drivers and reformatting did nothing. I finally reformatted AGAIN and downloaded the older version of shrink 3.17 along with the Nero OEM that came with my burner and everything works just fine. I haven't tried going back to the newer version of shrink because I dont need to. I can burn at 8x all day long and decodin and encoding are lightening quick. Although, the replies I received on this board were interesting, none worked for my particular problem at the time but I did learn alot more about how everything works.

Hi Chynk,
If you go to the Nero folder located at C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero you will find the NeroHistory.log file that keeps the last 5 write attempts done with Nero.
The log file you do show here, shows that the Simulation was succesful, but the actual write failed. The only difference between a Simulation and an Acutal write is the power output from the Recorder.
With that said, I'll wait till you post a log file from the External recorder.
Regards,
Craig

Thanks Chynk. :-)
But, there is nothing wrong with the log file you sent, but it was only a simulation write. Looks like you'll have to do an actual write. USe DVD-/+RW media if you can to avoid wasting any media.
