OK, thanks for everyone's help so far. I started this thread a few weeks back.
Per your advice, I just ordered and received some new media. This time I got a box of the Verbatim DVD+R DL , rated at 2.4X(up to 8X). (To be precise, on back of this 10-pack box it is UPS#0-2394295166-7.( All I have been reading on this thread and other forums is "Buy the Verbatim". So I did.
So, having the great Verbatim media, and a brand-new supposedly great quality drive, and the latest/greatest firmware, and using exactly the media the Sony Support site has validated, I go to burn my first Verbatim a few minutes ago. Of course, it fails, and I created my first $3 coaster.
For the Love of God, why is this so hard? Why is it so excruciating to make a DVD-DL? Who has really figured out how to do this?
Please realize I'm not exactly a dunce. In my 16 years with PC's, I've burned perhaps 1500 CDRs and perhaps 400 DVD-Rs. I burn at least 7 regular DVD-R?s a week, no problem. But, this DL stuff has me near the point of anguish. Is it just too new a technology? Is it just too much cutting edge? Am I really truly a goofus?
I will include my error log below from this burn. At this cost per piece, I don't dare try to burn another until I have some more advice.
Here is what I used:
Nero Burning Rom version 6.3.1.6 (I will be willing to upgrade
if someone has real evidence that will help)
Sony DRX-810UL(firmware 2.0d)(shows as DRU-810A)
Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4-8X
In Nero, picked DVD-ISO.(I just wanted to burn 7.5GB of files(JPGs) from my hard drive to DVD-DL. Under burn speed, Nero picked 8X (my drive will do 8X max speed on DL), so I left that speed stick instead of trying to manually lower it.
About a minute or so after it seems to start to burn, I get message that the burn failed. I got log below.
Please, anyone, any ideas???? I'm dying here??.

ok.. first off.. you want to cut out your serial numbe..
starts with 1A23
Bus Type : via Inquiry data (1) -> ATAPI, detected: ?
you want to uninstall drivers then just re-start.. according to this.. you have no drivers for the burner.
are these the dual layer verbs? you should only be burning these at 2.4x not 8x
Burn process failed at 8x (11,040 KB/s)

My experience says:
(1). Use reliable media like Verbatim for DL discs.
(2). Use +R format.
(3). Write at 2.4 X max in case of DL.
(4). Preffer CloneDVD it's the best out there.

i honestly think it's Nero giving you issues with the burn, not media, nor the firmware...i don't recommend using Nero (whichever 6 series version, regardless of update, however, i would recommend you update to at least a 6.6 version, 6.3 is outdated) to burn DL media, using DVD Decrypter ISO READ---ISO WRITE (or the newly updated imgburn for the writing portion) has given me 200+ successful DL burns on ALL my various burners
in ur case, i have a few models down from you, i have the Sony dru-710a, w/ BYX5 firmware...i CAN and HAVE burned even the Ritek DVD+R DLs (i know u had issues with Ritek DVD-R DL, but, in MY CASE, it's not the media, it's the burning program used)
also, as mentioned, SLOW UR BURN down, i can burn a successful Verb DVD+R DL @6x using my Benq 1640, but, with the price of DL media being so high, i even turn it down a notch...definitely NOT @8x~ :)
honestly, i think the resolution to ur prob. comes down to burning prog. used...ur firmware is fine, u have a good drive, u have arguably the BEST DL media out there right now...all i can see wrong at this point is ur prog. of choice to burn DL media..and the speed at which you attempted to burn it at...SLOW IT DOWN, use a diff. prog. for the burning...

hi :)
yep, must agree with the DOC, i too have burned 50+ Ritek D/L +r's with only one failure (human error)
i think you are beating yourself to death
burn at 2.4x...(4x max if you must)
use Decrypter read/write mode. not Nero
Quote: Physical memory 511mb
Free physical memory 86mb
you need to free up a lot more memory. close all unneccessary program's
one question comes to mind. how much free HDD have you
you need at least 16gig to complete the task
7.9gig(your data) which stays on your drive whilst you work
8.1gig that you are burning too

rkj78h6g5, stay away from Ritek/Ridata DL discs alltogether. Your burner is basically a rebranded BenQ DW1640 (whether internal or external) and there is no support written in the firmware for Ritek/Ridata DL media.
I have spoken with people that "claimed" they could burn this media with a BenQ DW1640, but nobody would back up their claims with the settings they used.
Take a look at the image below. QSuite says the media table is "unknown." This indicates that the media is not directly supported by the firmware. However, the 1640, and your burner can "learn" how to write to media that has an unknown media table. But from my experience, the best I can do is make it to a layer break and then it fails.
Verbatim DVD+ DL discs work great. And you can booktype them to DVD-ROM. Stay away from Ritek/Ridata DL media alltogether.

Thanks for all the help here.
Some things to clear up. My Sony DVD drive is PNP. No additional drivers needed. It is firewire so the ATAPI does not come into play. I just upgraded memory from 512 to 1GB a few minutes ago. I?ll try the 2.4x burn speed next. Jeeze, there are like 30 variables a person has to get right to make these DL disks.
Just to be clear on what I am trying to do here:
1. I am trying to create data DVDs
2. I want to be able to point an app at a folder in XP and say ?backup up this folder and all the thousands of files beneath it to this DVD+R DL media?
3. I need the end result to be a DVD that I can peruse and see the individual files and folders, so I can selectively restore them
4. I do not want the end result to be a DVD that has any proprietary image, or a giant archive file(like zip, gnu, tar, etc) that has to be opened. I think an 8GB archive file is asking for problems(one flipped bit and the whole file is useless)
5. Having said all this, what is the best app and how do it? I already have DVD Decrypter and CloneDVD, but it is not clear how to use them to make Data DVDs. In fact, I thought DVD Decrypter was for use with decrypting commercial DVDs so that they could be ripped to a hard drive. What I want to do is backup HD files to a DVD. Is there a procedure out here for this?
6. How to upgrade from Nero 6.3.1.6 to 6.6? I don?t see any way to do this on Nero site.
Thanks!!!

Looks like I figured this out.
Problem was not enough RAM!!
Only thing I changed was to used 1GB instead of 512MB.
I was able to burn 8X, Verbatim DVD+R DL all the way thru using Nero 6.3.1.6.
(I used the Nero BackItUp portion).
All seemed to go well and I can read the resulting DVD(but ONLY in my DL DVD drive; NOT in my 4 other non-DL DVD drives. Is that what we would expect?)
One NEW question gentlemen:
I'm already experienced at ripping and burning DVD videos(using DVDShrink and DVD-R media). They all play fine on my Panasonic DVD-S77 DVD player, a very new player which is in my home A/V system.
But, as you know, anytime you want to rip a DVD video that is more than 2 hours, DVDShrink uses compression so it will fit on a DVD. And the more compression used(expressed as a percentage in DVDShrink), the worse the resulting picture.
One of the reasons I and others buy the DVD DL burners and DL media is because we thought we could rip and burn LONG movies without using ANY compression. But, will these typical home DVD Players, like my Panasonic, be able to PLAY these DVDs?
When I look at the specs of my Panasonic, DL is not in the list. (and, although my Panasonic is able to read Data DVDS DVD-R 4.7GB(to display JPGs on the TV, for example), it was NOT able to read this DVD+R DL I just made above.
Is anyone having a good success with ripping long DVD videos to DL and then playing on their A/V DVD player, and if yes, which model player are you using?
Thanks,
Robert

glad to see you got it working for your data onto DVD+R DL media, i totally forgot that was ur case..AGAIN...my bad~ :)
the only other suggestion i could add is what gamename suggested, but i don't know if this will really help any, it probably WOULD for the newer standalone dvd players that you have, but the fact that it's a "data" dvd DL disc, i haven't tried it myself to booktype a "data" dvd DL into dvd-rom and attempt to get my players to read it...i'd be interested in knowing how it turns out for you though, i just don't have any DATA DLs right now to try it out~ :)

Thanks. Actually, I didn't booktype at all. I used Nero BackItUp module in Nero, and just chose a top folder, and it copied all those sub-folders and files to the DVD.
New Question: I cannot seem at all(I have DVDShrink, DVD Decrypter, Nero 6.3.1.6, CloneDVD, others) to figure out what is the step-by-setp procedure to copy a video DVD over to a DVD+R DL, so that I don't have to compress it, and that the burn will work. I note that on this site under Guides there seems to be every conceivable procedure except "How to copy a large(5-8GB) DVD-9 to a DL DVD without compression and loss of picture quality". I figure this MUST exist somewhere.
Any tips? I burned 3 more $3 apiece coasters just guessing at the steps last night.
Thanks,
Robert

I agree with the previous comment regarding copying +R DL, uncompressed. But you should also learn about bit-setting, aka book-typing. This is only relevant for +R (vs. -R), which is the format I've recently settled on. I'm sure you can find tons of info by searching After Dawn forums, or any other forums for that matter. In a nutshell, it tricks the DVD player into thinking the DVD+R disc is actually a DVD-ROM disc. (From my understanding there is a difference between all three DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD-ROM formats. Players shouldn't have a problem with -R or -ROM, but +R is a different story.)
To accomplish this on DVD Decrypter, check out http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

Quote: Problem was not enough RAM!!
Only thing I changed was to used 1GB instead of 512MB.
It is disturbing that you had to increase ram to make this work. Are you running other tasks during your burns? I use a startup manager program in which I have set up a "burn profile". When I reboot almost nothing else is running and I am ready to burn with no other demands on the processor or ram.
Also, is DMA turned on for your DVD drive?

OK, my nightmare with DL discs has returned.
I took Kivory's advice and used this guide:
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/Copying%20a%20Dual%20Layer%20DVD%...
So, I took a DL disc I own, "The Patriot", and was able to make and exact DL copy. So I thought, I got it! I now know how to do this.
Not really. I have just wasted 5 more coasters. All of them using these top-rated Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. This is killing me. And with at least 3 different movies.
I follow the instructions to the letter. I rip the DVD to the hard drive. I start the writing process, and around 40 seconds after the burn starts, it bombs with a vicious error message. The latest happened with Out of Africa and also Amistad.
The error message is coming from DVD Decrypter and looks like this(where it says RED X there is a red circle with the classic white X in it?
?DVD Decrypter
(RED X) I/O Error!
Device: [0:0:0] SONY DVD RW DRU-810A 2.0d (H) (1394)

Interpretation: Write Error
RETRY CANCEL?
I also got a screen print of this error if anyone wants to see. I don?t see anyway to upload it into this forum
Has anyone else got this error in DVD Decrypter? I simply cannot believe how hard this is. I?m about 1-2 days now from just giving up on DL.
Please assist!

Yo, please don't give up helping here guys, I'm going through the EXACT same problem as Rob. I've burned 5 coasters now and it's really getting on my nerves. I been at this all day with 2 separate spools of exact same media as Rob, ordered at 2 very separate times (weeks apart). I'm trying to back-up "The Island" and so far I've burned only one that (sort of) works with DVD-Decrypter (the .iso came from DVD Shrink with no compression). I say sort of because my drive can't read the disk title, I can't skip tracks, or skip to main menu. The only way to navigate is to fast forward/rewind or use the 'scenes' menu at the beginning. I'm strongly suspecting that DVD-D can't remove the copy protection on this one, but that's just a theory. The last coaster (#5/5) I burned exactly the same as Rob's last post to the T. The only major difference I see between our situations is that I'm using an internal NEC ND-3550a.

Well I'm just shooting in the dark now. I tried ONE MORE TIME using 2.4x since that was about the only thing I hadn't tried yet and guess what! It DIDNT work at all! lol I even defragged the drive with the ISO on it first. Same exact result. What are these error messages trying to tell us from within DVD-D?? I've had various different (same?) ones which I'll just list the "interpretation" lines that DVD-D is so nice to give us:
Example 1
Check Condition
Write(10) - Sectors 0-31
Power Calibration Error
Example 2
Check Condition
Write(10) - Sectors 2688-2719
No Seek Complete
Example 3
Check Condition
Send DVD Structure - DVD+R DL Boundary Information
Invalid Field in Parameter List
There you have it, 3 error screens that DVD-D is throwing at me. The first error didn't result in a coaster, but the second two did. So I'm up to 6 coasters and 1 semi-working DVD now. :) I'd have to say I'm not too impressed with the whole DL experience so far :P
1) What are the errors trying to tell us?
2) Does DVD-D really have the capability to remove all the CURRENT copy protection schemes?
3) What did gurnard mean when he said?:
Quote: one question comes to mind. how much free HDD have you
you need at least 16gig to complete the task
7.9gig(your data) which stays on your drive whilst you work
8.1gig that you are burning too
As for this I have DVD-D installed to C:\(FAT32) which has a little over 10GB (50%) free space. The ISO has been written to E:\(NTFS) which has 45GB (50%) free space. Both are partitions of the same physical drive.
4)Could a background task be interfering? Is "Rob" running F-Secure Internet security Suite by chance? Any proprietary U.P.S. software?
ok, thanks in advance, I'll shut up now and wait for response.

@cart0181 - can't help with the burning of DL disks (only cus i haven't done any, i get the gist of how they're done) however for one, the Island (Region 2 anyway) has no funny protections that either Shrink alone can't handle, nor DVD Decrypter. the errors you and rkj78h6g5 have posted suggest to me a firmware check is needed. apologies if you've done/checked this already, i haven't ready whole of the thread yet

@rkj78h6g5 -
right, i've refreshed my memory and gone over the thread from the beginning; noticed i hadn't gone thru your logfile from 26th February and not meaning to restate bits of logfile that the other guys have replied about so far -

also, don't forget you can do 'simulation' burns so Nero will go thru the motions of a burn with a disc but not write to it, so you don't need to waste discs to get your setup correct; also it produces a burn log entry, obviously that's useful if anything still needs tweaking

Hey guys, guess what!? I finally figured out it was just a defective drive. It's strange how I could do everything else perfectly except burn DL disks. I must have had a very rare problem. No wonder no one was able to help me. Well, thanks anyway. Moral to the story: try it in another computer or just RMA the stupid thing and save yourself some time. I reordered the same exact drive, works fine. However, I did also use media from a different spindle which I exchanged directly with Verbatim, so I suppose it could have been that too, but I doubt it.

Same thing happened to me in January 2006. My GSA-4163B burned perfect single-layers, but quit burning DLs after about a dozen burns. I wasted 6 Verbatims in the process - about $30 worth of discs. I've responded to a few user posts that suggest that this is not that uncommon with LGs.
The solution? No more LG products, for one thing. No more dealing with Newegg (sorry, I know some folks here like Newegg, but I've had nothing but problems with stuff bought there, and I'm not alone). I buy good drives (NEC, Pioneer, Benq, etc.) and good media. I use IMGBurn and Nero 7.0.8.2 because other versions are less stable and have minimal problems burning. Hope this helps.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
