Unfortunately, I am not familiar with Nero.
I would start a new thread for Nero help with the error message(s).

the problem with your nero is that you have not corrected the vts sectors properly so nero is reading the wrong size vobs for the ifo information re use ifoedit and it should work

I could really use your help. I have been reading though these forums and the tutorials on doom9 and mpucoder, but i can't find anyone that has run into my problem. I am trying to split a DVD-9 to 2 discs while keep the menu and all the special features. I follow all the usual steps. The main movie is on VTS_1, so I am okay there. I split on a chapter not a cell. I have copied the VIDEO_TS files to both discs' folders after IfoEdit is done. Then I apply the VTS Sectors fix. Everything works beautifully off my computer. I even set up the second disc to play the movie directly rather than going to the menu first. It all works just like it is supposed to. Then I go to burn...
I have tried both PrimoDVD and Nero 5.5.7.2. When I just copy the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders into Primo and try to burn, I get an error about a possible problem with the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders that I can view in the error log. Then it kicks out the disk. I get the same problem if I just try to burn the VIDEO_TS folder by itself (which is all the DVD had on it in the first place). When I try to do the same thing in NERO, I get an error about the disc not being writeable (which is not the case). So I thought maybe the problem was that I didn't create an image file. So I used IfoEdit to create an image and then Primo to burn the image. Now I get the error "Error -10 at Sector 0 - Command:55 Sense: 05 ASC:26 ASCQ:00" whatever the hell that means. I am following the directions for the rip process (and yeah I copied all the original files from the DVD), and if it didn't work perfectly on my PC, I would think I had done something wrong in the process.
Sorry for the long post, but if anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. I'm pulling my hair out.
I edited this because I forgot to tell you I am using IfoEdit .91 and PrimoDVD 2.0. I originally used SmartRipper 2.25 to rip. Thanks.

Okay, I a newbie and I may be a little dense here but I'm having a problem with Step 3 of the instructions from mscogna above dealing with IFOEDIT. It states:
Step 3.
Start IFOEdit and load VIDEO_TS. ...
How do I "load" the VIDEO_TS? What option is that in IFOEDIT? :(
A second, less important question would be, how stable are these programs? Both DVDDecrypt and IFOEdit keep crashing on me.
I'm running:
AMD XP1600
ASUS A7V266-E ( raid not activated )
256 DDR PC-2100
Voodoo 3000
Micro$oft Windows Experimental (XP) OS
Western Digital drives (60 gig, shouldn't matter)
Lite-on 20x16x32 CD-R/RW
Panasonic LF-D310 DVD-R/RAM burner
CMedia sound ( on mobo )
ZoneAlarm
Select [DVD PLAY] and wait until movie starts. Then Exit from IFOEdit. A window will be displayed informing you of what Titles played. Make a note of these.

Hey thought I needed to stop by and thank everyone 'specially mscogna without his walkthrough I would have never been able to get Oceans 11 copied. On that note with his guide and a few other I was able to figure out how to split them. Splitting is deffintly the hardest of the three options that I know about. I only wasted one disk thanks to ya'll. Anyway got it working and have one stupid question. The second disk chapters obviously doesn't match up with the scene selection menu chapters (I feel stupid thinking it would) is there away to get them to match up?

I have been following the steps that mscogna set out. And I think I am almost there. One thing I was wondering is that when you say to open IFOEdit and use DVD PLAY until the movie starts (step 3) do you mean just until the video begins, or should I wait through the FBI screen, coming attractions, etc., until the main movie actually begins to play?

Hmm, follwed the guide in this thread, and ran into some problems.
I am trying to split Harry Potter UK release.
What I ended up with, was a good disk 1, but disk 2 contained only a trailer for the movie (extra), not the rest of the film. I'm pretty sure I followed and understood all the sections, apart from maybe the last part of step 5.

MarkG,
I have only found frustration in trying to split the 2-layer dvd's to 2 Dvd-R's. I ran across a thread somewhere that put me onto this: www.digital-digest.com/dvd/articles/dvd2dvdr_more.html and this works and is relatively easy. I am deviating from his guide a little by skipping the last step of imaging the file and I am just recording the VIDEO_TS folder onto disks and having good luck with that. That cuts a lengthy step out. Try the guide!

IFOEDIT (0.9.1) seems to work beautiful, even running it on a mac (powerbook g4/550) under virtual pc / windows me). seems to be more stable than xp ;-D
doctorwho, one does not load the "video_ts", but the first .IFO file of the main part ...01_0.IFO or ...01_1.IFO. don't know what to do when trying to inclode the junk (sorry, "goody") files.

:( Can't get it to work.
This is what I tried with "Mean Machine" Region 2 Rental. The only VOB files on the disc are the movie anyway, there are no special features:
1) DeCrypt the whole DVD to my hard drive
2) Ran IFO Edit and split the movie to two new directories
3) Did the various IFO stuff and removed Region Coding and then did Get VTS etc.
When I oringally ripped the movie, it was 5.6Gb, but it was made into two 2.X Gb directories.
Tried to burn with Nero 5.5.9.0 but constantly got an error - Reallocation failed - not sure what this means or why it is happening.
If I run either directory from IFOEdit DVD player it works fine.
Any ideas?
EDIT: See the idea I formulated below, Mean Machine now works beautifully ;)

Right then, heres how I did it:
Using Decrypter, I processed only the chapters that came to less than 4.3Gb in the normal way.
After that finished, I then processed the remainder of the chapters, again in the normal way but obviously to a different directory.
I then had to Explore the DVD and copy the VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP files to BOTH directories (DVD Decrypter doesn't copy these for some reason).
I then opened IFOEdit and stripped out the audio etc. I didn't need - I told it to create new IFO's and I put them in a new directory called DVD1.
I repeated the same when finished but in a new directory called DVD2.
I went back into the IFO's in DVD1 and did Region Free, Remove PUP's and then Get VTS.
I went to DVD2 and did the same above.
I then burned the two DVD's using Nero - I am typing this has my missus is watching Mean Machine (Disc 1;)) right now.
Hope that helps you guys!
EDIT: Spelt Disc 1 wrong! doh!

Hello everyone. Found a way to get the 2nd disc to start at the movie right away, instead of going through the menu. Here goes:
From your folder containing the 2nd half of movie (usually DVD2), open VIDEO_TS.IFO with IFOEdit.
Double click "VMGM_MAT" to see the "First Play PGC"
Click "First Play PGC"
On the bottom half of the screen, scroll down until you see the address (000000f4) 1.Pre Command
Right Click on 1.Pre Command to change its value
In the drop down list, choose (Jump_TT)Jump to Title
Under Title Nr: choose 1 (if your main movie is in Title 1, 2 if it's in Title 2, etc.)
Click OK and save.
When you put the disk in, it should bypass the menu and play the movie right away.

if you follow my method above, you never get the menu and you still keep the original chapters on the first and second disc.

Personally, I like to start the first disc with the menu, cause I think some of em look cool. I put both discs on a 5 disc changer, so after the first is done, it goes right to the movie on disc 2. After the movie's done, it goes to the menu so I can watch the extras. I like it that way because it looks just like I'm watching the original - but of course, that's personal preference.
The way I do it is:
I rip the entire DVD with DVDDecrypter. Then I use IFOEdit .91 to split the main movie VOBs to 2 discs. I try to split about 2/3 of the movie onto the first disc, so I'll have room on the 2nd for the rest of the movie and all the extras. Since I have to use 2 discs anyway, I don't worry sbout stripping any of the unnecessary language or audio tracks - there's usually plenty of space left over. Besides, maybe I'll learn French someday! I then do the usual processing (mentioned numerous times on these posts), along with the menu start adjustment on the 2nd disc. I always do "Get VTS Sectors" LAST, after all other processes are done. I burn with Nero, and I always add the AUDIO_TS folder onto the disc, even though it's empty. I find some console players look for that folder, so add it for max compatability.

pbxpress,
can you explain the steps you use to add the extras on the 2nd dvd? All the discussion so far in this thread has been on having a working movie on 2 dvds but not on the extras.
I am really interested in your method.
thanks

I start off by ripping the entire contents of the dvd into a folder named VIDEO_TS. (If you're using SmartRipper, just click on the "Files" tab, and click "All" to make sure all files are ripped).
Once it's finished, you should have a working copy of the entire dvd in your folder. The main movie is contained in the VTS with the biggest files - the other VTS are the extras. You can check by opening the VIDEO_TS.IFO file in IFOEdit, then click Play DVD. (I always get a error message saying no volume found, or something like that - does anybody else get that?) Anyway, just click OK, and the movie should start. Click through the various chapters, and play with the menus, extras, etc., just to make sure everything's there.
Now, you're going to split the vob's of the main movie (usually VTS_01 or VTS_02) using the splitting function in IFOEdit.
The trick here is picking the splitting point. I always split on a chapter, and not the default layer switch point. Now, if the dvd has a lot of extras, say 1 or 2 GB worth, I'll split the movie so about 2/3 is on disc 1, and the rest on disc 2. That way, there's room on disc 2 for all the extras. Of course, you specify 2 new folders called DVD1 and DVD2 (or whatever you want to call them) and let er rip.
Now, just go to Windows Explorer, and copy the extra files needed to play the movie into BOTH DVD1 and DVD2. Also, copy the extras (those other VTS files) into DVD2. It's a good idea at this point to double check the folder size and make sure it'll fit on the DVD. Do your normal processing, region free, etc. Check your work by opening the VIDEO_TS file in DVD1 with IFOEdit, and click "Play DVD". Do the same with DVD2 - this time, you can play the extras as well.

Here's another thought:
I'm fairly new to the dvd ripping thing, and as many of you can attest to, by far the hardest part is splitting the discs. I was going crazy trying to figure out which files goes to which directory after splitting. Invariably, I would miss a file or two which prevented me from playing disc 1 or 2 or both! Then, I got a idea which is both foolproof and simple.
After splitting the movie into 2 directories, why not just copy ALL of the other files from your original rip (besides the original movie, of course) into both DVD1 and DVD2. Then, check your folder sizes. Chances are, each folder can still fit onto 1 dvd, since it only contains half the movie. Basically, you're just making 2 complete discs, each containing half the movie. Other than the number of chapters will be wrong (which you can correct - if you're interested, let me know), the DVD Player will just think that you're playing a regular disc - it won't know that the whole movie isn't there.
I found that this method is much less confusing than trying to figure out what titles played, what to keep, etc. As you get more experienced, you'll be able to estimate your splitting point better to make sure you can fit everything in, and you'll be able to spot the extras you want to keep or delete.

pbxpress,
thanks,
I will certainly try that. I find that infoedit is not consistent in splitting movies.
I couldn't split the movie Amelie and get it to work on my table top player. It plays well in my computer dvd player and infoedit was playing the splitted dvds well from the hardrive.
I don't knbow what went wrong.
Were you able to get the chapter selection to work on the second dvd with your method?
thanks again

right7:
No, the chapter selection menu will not work correctly on disc 2, since the menu chapters will not be referring to the actual chapters on the disc - remember you split the movie up. You can of course, keep track of the chapters yourself, and jump to the one you want. For example, if you know that you have 10 chapters on disc 1 and 10 chapters on disc 2, and you want to jump to chapter 15, you would put the 2nd disc on, then jump to chapter 5. Of course, the easier way is just press the chapter up/down button.
Also, I mentioned in my earlier post about adjusting the number of chapters. I'm not sure if it's absolutely necessary, since nobody else on this board seems to do it, but I always do.
After I split the movie, I go to DVD1, open the VIDEO_TS.ISO file. I click on VMG_PTT_SRPT -Video Manager Title Play Map Table. In the detail part, select TiTle 1: Number of chapters (PTTs). Double click to change its value. Enter the new value, which corresponds to the number of chapters. So, for example, if you split the movie on chapter 15, you would enter 15. Click OK.
Do the same with DVD2. Just remember to specify the correct number of remaining chapters.

OK, as far as NERO burning is concerned, I too have the reallocation error with disk 1 but disk 2 burns fine. I followed mscogna's cut and dry method and did successfully burn disk 2 of Harry Potter. Disk 1 was a no go and I have not been able to modify any files in the DVD1 folder to get Nero to accept it and burn it. Solution? Seeing other boards suggesting using Nero 5.5.8.0 to burn seems to be the only choice until someone figures out the issues with Nero 5.5.8.2 and up. I downloaded Nero 5.5.8.0 and uninstalled 5.5.9.0. Then I installed 5.5.8.0 and rebooted. Then I tried to burn DVD1 folder and behold, reallocation successful! It is burning right now and I hope it works in my standalone player. I am using Windows XP Pro with 256Meg DDR PC2400 with a Athlon XP 2000+ overclocked to a 2100+ (139MHz FSB vs. 133MHz FSB). I am using a Pioneer DVR-A04 DVD-Burner and burning on TDK Media and DVD-RW media at that (incase of any mistakes). Once I get it right, I guess I'll use DVD-R media also from TDK. I have already made one DVD-R coaster and plan on not doing that again! Anyway, seems Nero 5.5.8.0 will burn disk 1. I have not tried disk 2 again, but I would assume (oh no!) that it would work as well. Try this URL to download Nero 5.5.8.0 as it is not available on the other mirrors or on AHEAD.DE downloads.
ftp://137.226.80.218/pub/mirror/ftp.ahead.de/Nero5580.exe
Only the latest version 5.5.9.0 is available. Don't know how long this link will last, but I plan on keeping the install file just incase! Any comments? I'm interested! Thanks to all you folks for the help! Don't know why I want to do this, but making 'backups' of DVD movies is cool right now. Good luck to all of you!
Regards,
Xenawise
