Does anyone have good and acurate information on a "working" method of accomplishing this task??
I have read the forums..and tried the guide methods both on Doom and MPUcoder's site...to no avail??
I am running XP and not sure if there are issues with the program, "IFOedit" which is said to be the program used to split the movies for burning. I have been unsuccessful in getting the split feature to function...mine "crashes" with a fatal error everytime I choose that option...
Also, have tried using Smartrip to rip half the chapters at a time..then add the other required files...and it will play using the DVD play feature in IFOedit or PowerDVD, but...when I burn that folder to DVDR..it will not play in my set top unit..which has played DVDR's previously???
If someone that knows or has info on how to get this done I would greatly appreciate the expert help!!!
Thx!

I think you may have a system problem....
IFOedit is the way to go and the procedure from DOOM9 works...

Mscogna....I have seen several of your posts and you seem to know, at least, a little more than most about this?
As you mentioned...I am wanting to use IFOedit, but...as I stated, everytime I choose the split feature, it crashes, and says "fatal error"?
Is there any special .dll files needed for this program to work properly?? What OS are you using??
Thing is, I have been able to use the program to strip, and do all the other stuff it is used for...but...just can't get it to split???
Any advice or help you could give would be very...much appreciated!!!
BTW...have you been able to get dvd's split using the method in Smartrip where you rip half the chapters into one folder, then the other half into another one, and essentially do the same thing after??
Reason I ask, is I have gotten one split using that method..but...can't get the second half to play??? Dunno if it's some thing I am not doing correctly to the second VTS_IFO or what??
Anything special you do to the second half to make it play??
Thx!!!

I am on a Win2k box, 512mb memory, 120gb HD
I am still thinking that it might possibly be a conflict with XP.
F.Y.I. Found another guide on splitting.
Haven't tried it yet.
http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/derrow/splitprob1.html#moviestart
Also, I have another splitting method at home that I have been using successfully. It is quick and to the point, but it works. I will try to remember to bring it with me tomorrow. I am going to try that procedure above to take out the menu in the second half. I will let you know how it works.

Oh...thank you, thank you!!
I am on a similar system, AMD Athlon 1800, 512 RAM, 100 GB HD, so..the only real diff is the OS, as you mentioned?
Not sure why it would work with 2000 and not with XP, but..???
This should really not be that hard I wouldn't think? But..I actually bought my DVD burner thinking you could just copy a DVD as you do a CD, boy...what a surprise! Which, to this day, I am still not sure why the software does not function that way....I mean, if it can tell that the layout is wrong for a DVD to burn correctly, then why can it not just go ahead and rip it directly to another DVD disc, and do all the necessary changes that we are trying to do manually?? Oh well...se la vi!
Maybe in the future, huh??
So, until now, if you have another splitting method I can try, I would appreciate it!!
As I mentioned earlier...I got the first part of Ali to work fine, using Smartrip to split the chapters..then using IFOedit to do the rest...but..I can not figure out how to get the second half of the movie configured to work properly...try the same methods...but no go!
The one I am on now is Behind Enemy Lines..and it only shows to have two chapters...so...since the main movie of that one is all in one chapter...no way to split using that method???
I swear......I feel like you did on your earlier post...AARRRGGGHH!!! :)
Boy...wish they would hurry up and make a DVDR 9 that we could buy..and no more need to split!!
Email me if ya like...might be easier to communicate ideas that way?

Cut-n-Dry Splitting Procedure.
After performing this procedure, you will end up with two discs, each containing a DVD Menu.
Step 1.
Using SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter, rip your DVD completely (all files) to your Hard Drive into a folder named
'VIDEO_TS'
and make sure the folder name is uppercase.
Step 2.
Prepare two empty directories and name them DVD1 and DVD2. Within each of these directories, create a directory called 'VIDEO_TS'.
Step 3.
Start IFOEdit and load VIDEO_TS. Select [DVD PLAY] and wait until movie starts. Then Exit from IFOEdit. A window will be displayed informing you of what Titles played. Make a note of these.
Step 4.
Determine what set of VOB?s is your Main Movie. Then, start IFOEdit again and load the VTS_xx_0.IFO of the main movie. ( xx is the set number, eg. 03 )
Press the button [VOB Extras] . A dialog box will appear, allowing you to select what processes you want to do. The standard options are already selected for you.
Select the [Strip Streams] option also. DO NOT select [Strip VOB ID?s].
Down at the bottom, select the DVD1 and DVD2 directories you created. The button with the dot in it will allow you to browse for each directory
Press the [OK] button.
A dialog box will be displayed containing the chapters. I usually pick somewhere in the middle and not on a cell.
Another dialog box will be displayed containing the Audio Info. The two obvious selections should already be made for you.
When ready, press the [Split It] button and the process will start.
Step 5.
IFOEdit created a new IFO file and VOB files of your movie in the specified destination directories.
There are some files missing that you need to copy into BOTH directories.
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_xx_0.VOB ( xx is the main movie set, eg 03)
You will also need to copy the set or sets from Step 3. Example, IFOEdit returned that it used Titles 1,2 and 4. Sets 1 and 2 pointed to VTS_01 and 4 pointed to VTS_3 (the main movie).
You will need to copy all VTS_01_x files to both directories also.
Close IFOEdit.
Step 6.
Open VIDEO_TS in DVD1 folder with IFOEdit and press 'Get VTS Sectors' to correct all start sectors. When asked, click 'Yes' to correct all IFO files.
Press the [Region free] button. If IFOEdit tells you that No RCE checking was found, click on the [Save] button and skip to Step 7.
If RCE checking was found, you must load each IFO file and repeat the 'Region free' procedure, saving each one.
Step 7.
Open VIDEO_TS in DVD2 folder with IFOEdit and press 'Get VTS Sectors' to correct all start sectors. When asked, click 'Yes' to correct all IFO files.
Press the [Region free] button. If IFOEdit tells you that No RCE checking was found, click on the [Save] button and skip to Step 8.
If RCE checking was found, you must load each IFO file and repeat the 'Region free' procedure, saving each one.
Step 8.
Your all set. Burn the Disc?s.

step 4 says to determine which vod is the main movie. How do you determine which one it is? Is it just the biggest one?

Yes. If you add up the individual set sizes, the largest one will be the main movie. You
can also use VOBrator to view the VOB's.

MsCogna.... have you ripped and copied successfully, the movie "Oceans Eleven" by chance??
I have seen there are some issues with this particular movie, and didn't want to try your method on it, not have it work, and think it is the fault of your method vs. the movie?
If so, let me know if there is anything different about that particular movie, and solutions...etc...
Thanks again!! :)

Nope, sorry. But, I just finished 5 more movies following this method and I did not have any problems :=)
The one thing I have found is that sometimes you can just have the main movie, lets say for example:
vts_03_0.ifo
vts_03_0.bup
vts_03_0.vob
vts_03_1.ifo
vts_03_1.bup
vts_03_1.vob
vts_03_2.ifo
vts_03_2.bup
vts_03_2.vob
vts_03_3.ifo
vts_03_3.bup
vts_03_3.vob
vts_03_4.ifo
vts_03_4.bup
vts_03_4.vob
vts_03_5.ifo
vts_03_5.bup
vts_03_5.vob
and the 3 VIDEO_TS files
video_ts.ifo
video_ts.bup
video_ts.vob
processed with [VTS sectors] and [region free] and everything works great.
But I have run into problems with some movies that, for whatever reason, want the extra set(s) that IFOEdit identifies in Step 3 on the disc as well.
I hope you have some luck with my procedure. I am also working on a follow-up procedure that will have the second DVD start the rest of the movie right away without any menus, etc...

Yipee!!!
That is exactly what I was going to ask next, as I ripped Ali using the method of taking Smartripper, and splitting half the chapters into two seperate folders.
Then, going through most of the same procedures as in your method, except that I got the first dvd to work, but....can not get the second one to?
It will not even read in IFOedit's player, which of course means it won't work at all. Seems as if it plays there, it will work anywhere? But, if not...you still got prob's!
Any clues as to why the second dvd won't play...??
I think it might be like you mentioned, it wants to have some of the same files...but...gonna check that out.

MsCogna... congrats on your success. I haven't had any luck using your method. I have the Sony DVD+RW for creating the DVD movies and I use the Sony DVP-S360 settop for viewing them but no luck so far. I am successful during the creation process using the IFOedit DVD player to view the results but the disc never plays in my settop player. I have also traveled to the store and tried my creation in their players and I get the same results (making sure my settop player is not the problem). I also have MyDVD and it creates discs that do play on my settop player so I pretty much believe it isn't the settop player or the blank Sony media. I have used Nero and also B's Recorder Gold but neither have produced a valid settop disc - well now, with all that info, I must be doing something wrong.
I tried creating a copy of MI2 and it plays beautifully on my PC using WinDVD but won't play on settop. I reviewed your Cut-n-Dry splitting procedure notes over and over again for perhaps a detail I might have missed, but no luck.
Any suggestions?
p.s. On my settop player when I insert the MI2 copy, the display indicates Title 18... I don't understand the logic within the settop player that instructs it on what to do. It autostarts when I insert the disc on my PC but won't autostart when I insert the disc on my settop...

Thanks for the update digger... I don't have Prassi.
Anyway, I spent the last several hours trying another method... and viola - it worked. I am now a member of the success club. Yeah!!!
And I owe thanks to everyone in the forum.
Without all the comments in the threads, I would not have persisted in making this endeavor a success.
My method of madness:
1) I updated to IfoEdit 0.91 and followed the method above from mscogna with several noted differences
2) Use SmartRipper to rip the whole disc - ensure the target directory is upper case (VIDEO_TS)
3) find your played titles (extremely important)
4) Use IfoEdit with:
- vob extras
- strip stream
- strip vobids
- correct vob-units
- correct IFO
- create new ...
(these options worked for me - hopefully they will work for you) (now that I have a working method, I will experiment on whether all these optins are necessary)
- select all vobids
5) Now, before you perform the GET VTS sectors, copy the missing files
- VIDEO_TS.VOB
- also copy the main movie VTS_xx_0.vob and rename to VTS_01_0.vob (another extremely important item)
- copy the other played title files (bup, ifo, first vob only) (all you need is the first vob)
6) Now perform the Get VTS Sectors (nothing different here) (I did not need the REGION free option for this one to work) (also did not use the P-UPs button)
7) Burn baby burn - I used B's Recorder Gold V3.19 for this
8) Put this bad boy in the settop player and viola - plays like a charm.

what do you mean by "Start IFOEdit and load VIDEO_TS" Do you mean load the ifo file that is in the VIDEO_TS directory. I tried that and I get a blank screen.

I new to this, so assume I no nothing. I started my first rip today with Blackhawk Down everything was going just as you said until I got to Step 5. Being a newbie it just was not clear to me what files I need to copy over to DVD1 and DVD2. Could you give me a push in the right direction?

OK, here goes, (from what you listed):
This applies to both DVD folders....
VTS_01_0.VOB
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.BUP
Now, go to step 6 to process each DVD. If you want the extra's, you can manually copy them into the DVD2 folder. Do that BEFORE you process DVD2, if you want them. ( You may or may not have to do the Region option in step 6)
Good luck.... When you get good at this, then you can start playing around stripping menus, FBI screen, Copyright screen and Rating screens.
Also, what did IFOEdit return for titles when you exited?? On some DVD's, you will need to manually add the set(s) denoted in VIDEO_TS. I
believe there is a way around it, modifying the jump command, but that is another thread!!!
