Do you think the reason you can't play DVD's out of the box could be because of the GCN reader in the drive?

Doubtful. The drive will have to be able to read at least two formats (Wii and GCN) anyways.

Marketing maneuver to reach finacial needs then?
But I'd see no need seeing that Nintendo is doing well.

It's a good question that I would like to know too..I think that as sully_2U said it's because they wanted backwards compatibility.I mean if the wii games are dvd than why wouldn't regular dvd's play like ps2 and xbox. They are dvd's right?

Yeah, it must be some weird encryption in the Wii games or something because the drive is a DVD drive so it should beable to read DVD-Video along with the Wii and GCN games.

That's crazy why would nintendo put that crazy encryption on it? It seems like a partial waste of a dvd drive to not allow it to play dvd's too.A bad move by nintendo.
How ever crazy it seems, I think your right maybe it's for anti-piracy or something.

It is only a possibility, but it could be like that. However, I think it also has alot to do with the drive beingable to read GCN discs too, because that would make the drive all weird.

It's not a deal with the GCN discs, you can play / write mini-dvds in a regular dvd drive / burner (there's a smaller sunken circle on the tray inside the regular size circle)
The only reason why I could see Nintendo not offering a built in dvd movie player is because of their primary focus on gaming above all else. Sony and Microsoft are developing / have developed multimedia platforms rather than pure gaming systems. Nintendo has stated multiple times that they are focused on providing a gaming platform, rather than a multimedia platform such as the 360 and the PSP (and I'm sure eventually the PS3)
Nintendo has purposefully left multimedia out of all of their products thus far.. tho it would seem logical to include a dvd player built in now that Nintendo will be using regular dvd media. Maybe they dont include it in the Wii to help reduce the price?

Yes but the games are on DVD's so theirfore you would need a DVD drive to read them. And why wouldn't that dvd drive beable to read dvd-video?

It's capable of reading DVD video, it just doesn't have the necessary decoder to display the video (which will most likely be available in an accessory)
Similar to how a dvd drive in a computer can read data from a dvd, but can't play a DVD unless it has the proper software
Ever try to play a PS2 / Game Cube game on your computer? Same deal ^_^

it should be noted that the big reason the GC couldnt read DVD videos is BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO BIG TO FIT IN THE TRAY ANYWAY. It would have meant a bigger footprint for the console and as someone previously mentioned, Nintendo seem to focus on games , not home entertainment centers. So no DVD decoders were needed, thus better value for the customers (as an MPEG2 decoder license costs money), and as has also been said most people already have a DVD player anyway...

woe woe woe back up.
cantide: Your wrong. The reason we can't play a console game on a pc is way beyond a simple decoder.Ever heard of an emulator? And you know why there not successful with current and next gen consoles?Because it's more than a decoder. And your right about the lack of decoder for the reason it couldn't play dvd's.
offrome: I'm surprised You didn't say the above lol.
nickberry : Welcome to the nintendo wii forums if I didn't say it already. We were NOT talking about gamecube at first. The whole question was why can't wii play dvd video if it has a dvd drive. We all know why the gcn couldn't do it.
sully_2u :Sup.. your pretty cool. I saw you on the ps3 and other forums and went ahead and added you to my buddies list. You could start a personal page too if you want.See ya around.
If it's just a decoder(and it is hopefully see my cantide responce) than nintendo is stupid.Knowone knows to what extent nintendo would will protect there next system from hacker prevention so it amazes me that you all just dismiss the encryption theory.Nintendo has plenty of free decoder option's out there, so it's more than that I think.I could be wrong but if I am nintendo is stupid like I said.

@tycobb - That's cool, I wouldn't know what to do with the personal page.
About the non-existant decoder, could that leave room for modding?

@ sully_2u Ahh... dang I tryed to put you on my buddies list but it would'nt let me...because you don't have a personal page .All well That sucks.I didn't know that when I posted.Well if you ever decide to make a personal page, just add me to your's.It links automatically to my personal page so I will know and add you too mine.Cheers.
(ps... No. It wouldn't leave room for modding. The gcs was modded anyways. And wii will be too.I see no reason for leaving out dvd video playback.)
If you disagree noobs you better read the previous posts first biatch.I aint writing all this sh!t again lol.

It has been rumored (since 2005, actually) that it would be a optional dongle that could be purchased.
A dongle is a small piece of hardware that would be connected to the system somewhere. If it was a dongle, than the software necessary to read a DVD would in fact be on the Wii, but useless without the dongle.
I guess it would be an easy way for nintendo to make a small profit, but I don't think many people nowadays would opt for making the wii a DVD player (unless it would be really dirt cheap).

I know it's more than a simple decoder, but my point is that the hardware can read from a DVD, but you need the specific software to use what's on it (You may be able to read raw data from a DVD, but it doesn't necessarily mean you can use what's on it. Like the difference between DVD data, DVD movie and DVD games)
I was just aiming for an easy example.. something everyone may have tried before. But you're right, you would need more than just a mere video decoder in order to play console games on your computer.
Most likely this is a cost reducing feature since most people will only want to play Games on the Wii rather than play DVD movies on it .. how many people would actually play DVD movies on the Wii anyway? That's what my PS2 will be used for once I get my Wii ;)
If you do want to play DVDs on the Wii, just pick up the $20 dongle.. or drop another $10 on a regular DVD player and avoid the extra wear and tear on your precious console

yeah the gcn had a similar dongle or add on but noboDy remebers it lol.And that was back when people were wanting it to play dvd's but I remember it was like $100 and maybe only released in japan dunno.
I wouldn't buy it now.But $20 sounds resonable for anyone who doesn't already have a dvd player. The only reason I like ps2 being a dvd and cd player is (back then) I felt like I was getting a great deal a dvd player back then was $150-$400 .I also felt like I could have my dvd,cd,and game all in one compact place saving me room in my small room.
This extra little bonus is why I got a ps2 and xbox first.I think many did the same or just didn't get a gcn at all.I think it costed the company back then. But now I think it'll be different.Of coarse I get the same feeling with ps3 because it will include bluray which is over $1000 and free online gaming.I never under estimate the power of the word FREE.LOL

i think as these systems are going online it will be tougher to hack because once there is a breakthrough nintendo or any other system will just make an update,i think anyone that wants to hack will never be able to go online

I respect your more researched opinion. And your right it's getting harder and harder as far as online goes. They CAN patch it .However it will be hacked ,it's inevitable. There will always be a super hacker no matter what...I learned it the hard way.
Besides you people enjoy these pre release forums while they last because after it's been released it will be flooded with mod hacks and exploits. No longer will you be able to just talk here.Trust me.

@ tycobb now i don't know if it can be hacked because who ever is a master hacker there is an even bigger team of genuisses wanting to stop hacking in order to make money, i think we underestimate what developers will do to prevent hacking

True, but they have been trying to get rid of hacks since they existed and you know what they still exist.A good example would be micrsoft even with all that money, experience, and solutions they still have not come close to getting rid of hacks.
ps2 and xbox 1 had hacker preventitve measures and they failed.Xbox 360 had even more and yet if you go to the xbox 360 forum right now you will see a whole crap load of people hacking it.
