For the Wii games they will be regular DVDs but you can also play the Mini-DVD Gamecube games in the same drive.

since the Wii's games are going to be on regulaer sized DVDs, and also play GC games on mini DVD's, do you think the Wii will be able to load backup copies of GC games? Since backups are on DVDs (regular or mini), the Wii shouldnt have a problem reading them, correct?

The Wii is sounding better and better because it plays regular dvd's? You must not have high expectations, the PS2 has been doing this for what, 6-7 years now??

Yes, true. But the Wii will play 2 different types of discs ( DVD vs. Mini-DVD ) in the same optical drive. This is a first in console history.

sully_2u : The ps3 will play blu-ray and dvd's.So I wouldn't say it's a first if they are coming out the same time.Besides that xbox 360 and ps2 are backwards compatible without having to play 2 different formats.
shauntay : hi,Didn't the gamecube have a dvd drive add on?I mean that wouldn't help for games but for movies it was available.

I meant the diffeerent Discs. DVD are 12cm right? and the Mini Dvd's are 8cm. Wii will beable to handle both of these different discs with one drive. You cannot stick a Mini Disc in a xbox or ps2 and expect it to play it.

I suggested over in the GameCube forums that maybe the Max Drive Pro trick would work with the Nintendo Wii to boot backup GameCube games. They thought I was crazy, but I believe if the Wii boots GameCube games and has GameCube memory card ports, there is a chance that this same trick will work, booting GCOS 1.5 or whatever and launching the backup game.

hi, sully well a mini-disc would fit in an xbox or ps2 it's just they didn't use them That's why it won't work. You can't stick any game from a console into a different console and expect it to work.Your right about the sizes of coarse.

Well, even if you did put a ps2 game on one of the mini-discs, i don't think the ps2 would read it right. ( I could be wrong, plz tell me if i am ). Otherwise Nintendo would be lying to us, and Nintendo doesn't seem like the company that would do that to it's consumers.

oh I got ya now.You mean the position of the lazer eye in the optical drive would not read a mini disc because of it's smaller size.Well I dunno. But again it's just cause sony and ms didn't use em.From a hardware standpoint I know it could read em if sony and ms wanted that from the beginning.
No no no... Nintendo is a great company as you know. They never lie purposely to deceive people. Why did nintendo say it couldn't be done?Just wandering why you say "Otherwise nintendo would be lying to us."

yeah I remember that I don't even have to look at the link It was being touted as ps 2.5 but your right it flopped.I think that was the case with the gamecube hydrid too.
I think japanese are more technically oriented and that there the only folks that would buy this stuff. That said it did look cool. The price was probably the reason it flopped I remember that psx was like 600 bucks back then. Thanks for the insight glad you corrected me back there.

I meant that Nintendo must be telling the truth about being the Wii being the first console to play 2 different sizes of discs in one optical drive

@Shauntay The mini-DVDs are sort of like a dvd with the outer 2cm cut off, so they can only hold around 1.4GB (just a little info since the question was asked earlier)
As for playing DVD video on the Wii, I believe Nintendo said that you would have to buy an accessory to play DVD video (probably a hardware piece with the dvd video codecs on it)
It's pretty neat that the Wii will be able to play GCN games. I didn't buy a Game Cube, but there were a few games I saw that I would have liked to play. Now maybe I'll be able to buy them cheap and play them on my Wii ^_^
