It could last two years, it could last two weeks, there's no way of telling. Most cheap companies are the same as they use very poor quality electronics inside which can't stand up to the power a PC uses, especially not a quad core. Sunbeam and Raidmax certainly fall into the same category. The two cheap PSU brands that are acceptable are the Antec Earthwatts and Corsair CX / VX series, very little else.

I'm using 32 bit vista home premium sp1 on an acer aspire 6920 and i seem to be having a very similar problem. I'll be using it and it will randomly freeze in various programs about once every 2 hrs.

Any ideas?

Thanks ahead of time

ya i will do a memtest this weekend. i cant get to it right now. and i no the power supply is no good but 450W is more than enough. and just an update on the freeze. It doesn't do it at all if it is left in sleep mode. but anything else such as locking or a fresh boot it will randomly freeze.

What are your thoughts on the Enermax Tomahawk 405W PSU?

I don't know, there have been a lot of mediocre Enermax PSUs in the past. Stick with a Corsair CX or VX, Antec Earthwatts or OCZ StealthXStream.

That's the more powerful version of my server's power supply (the 380W) A Core 2 Duo, X1900XT Graphics card (uses more power than a HD4850) and five hard disk drives, so far so good :)

alright so i have narrowed the problem down to this. It will not freeze at all if it is left in sleep mode, but once the computer is turned off and turned back on it will at some point in time randomly freeze. What do you guys think?

PROBLEM SOLVED :):):)...so i just went ahead and did a fresh install of home premium 32-bit. Popped out a stick of RAM becaused vista 32 only supports 4gb..and voila..installed all kinds of stuff..been on it for hours and nothing! :)

P.S. Are all versions of windows vista on one disc?

I would also like to thanks sammorris and all the other people who contributed. Thanks!

I'd try swapping the RAM stick you removed with one that you kept in there, just to be sure.

As it happens, Geforce graphics cards do have problems with 64-bit drivers. I'd forgotten all about that, that could well have been the problem all along... <slaps head>
